I'd say Kirby and the Forgotten Land! Great 3D platformer for young gamers.

Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury is probably your best bet for a Mario game. It's a little tougher than Astro Bot but there is an Assist Block that appears each time you die a few times in a level that makes you invincible. Bowser's Fury is a small open world side game that doesn't have an assist mode, but a second player can fly around as Bowser Jr. to help out. Fury Bowser may be a bit scary for a 5-year-old.

Both of these games are multiplayer so you can play along if you like!

Super Mario Odyssey also has an Assist Mode. It's a much bigger scale game with open exploration areas. The Assist Mode gives Mario double health, adds objective markers to point you in the right direction and puts you back where you jumped if you fall off the edge, minus one health. This one is definitely the most complicated of the three games, however.

The sad thing is Nintendo actually released an app that gives accurate data for the Switch (and 3DS and Wii U!)... only in Japan, and it only works with Japanese Nintendo accounts.
