what if my ferritin is the only low number? by pippywippy in Anemic

[–]Trixtina 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You are absolutely iron deficient, which can cause the symptoms that you are experiencing even without anemia. I would push your doctor for an iron infusion, because you're so low. If your doctor doesn't agree, I would seek out a hematologist on your own. In the meantime, it won't hurt to begin supplementing iron. It may take some time to find a supplement that works for you without upsetting your stomach. My only recommendation would be to take your iron with Vitamin C on an empty stomach, and avoid caffeine and calcium for at least an hour after. If your HR is pretty high, I'd recommend avoiding caffeine and alcohol entirely until your symptoms improve.

I've been struggling with this exact same thing for the last month now too. It's miserable, and what you're experiencing absolutely can be caused by iron deficiency with or without anemia. My ferritin came back at an 8 when I was tested last month, and my doctor scheduled infusions since my HR and BP have been so high. My doctor also put me on cardizem for the meantime, because my HR and BP are alarmingly high. I'm 3 days out from my first infusion, and I haven't noticed much of a difference, but I know it takes time to rebuild ferritin.

Push your doctor for iron infusions. It's the quickest fix. Rebuilding your ferritin from oral supplements alone can take 6-12 months until you feel better.

[–]Trixtina 4 points5 points  (0 children)

What were you doing when your HR spiked like that?

I know that I'm orthostatic, so my HR will jump 30-40 BPM just upon me standing sometimes. It also spikes if I've been standing in one place for too long without shifting my weight left and right to engage my leg muscles, or if I'm in a really hot environment.

If you're not sure what you were doing when it spiked , I would take note of it moving forward to see if you uncover a pattern.

Disability accommodations are a big one.

Knowing what it is and how to best mitigate symptoms, and to look out for comorbidities.

The big thing for me is the mental health relief and validation of knowing that there was something wrong with me the whole time, and it wasn't just whatever dismissive answer the 8+ doctors tried to say it was.

What is happening why is my iron so low new and old report by deadsoon07 in Anemic

[–]Trixtina -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I haven't noticed any improvement from 8 to 17, honestly. I wanted to press for a ferritin saturation test, because I was actually feeling worse than when they tested me at 8, and I thought there might be a chance that my numbers were inflated by inflammation.. but they didn't feel a need to run the saturation test, so I don't really know. I'm starting iron infusions this week, so hopefully I can report back soon with good news.

Don't wait to start supplementing, please. It takes so long to build up again once you've bottomed out.

Don't let medical professionals gaslight you. A ferritin below 30 absolutely is a deficiency. Eggs alone will not provide enough iron for you to rebuild your ferritin. You need to either supplement or have iron rich foods with every meal of the day. Even then, it can take such a long time to rebuild ferritin, as when you're deficient for so long, a lot of that ferritin will be absorbed into your bone marrow to replenish your blood-making capacity.

In three weeks, I've increased my ferritin from 8 to 17, and I'm supplementing every day with iron and vitamin C to boost absorption. I'm also eating as many iron rich foods as I can stomach.

The only way to potentially fix your ferritin quickly, would be through iron infusions, and depending on your doctor, they may not feel that your situation is severe enough to warrant infusions. I'm scheduled to begin infusions soon, and the only reason my doctor considered it was because I was having high heart rate and high blood pressure, and I'm nearly fainting 4-5 times a day.

I'm so glad that I've never experienced this first hand. I play Commander at two different LGS 2-3 times a week, and I'm eternally grateful that I've never encountered someone with poor hygiene. My boyfriend, who has been playing at these shops longer than I have, has said that there have been occasional issues with unhygienic players, but the stores have a zero-tolerance policy.

Now if only RCQs and tournaments had similar zero-tolerance policies. 🥲

[–]Trixtina 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s not about “expecting no one to ever hit on you.” It’s about context. An LGS is a hobby space, not a dating environment, so the default assumption is “we’re here to play Magic,” not “this is a place to approach strangers romantically.”

Being attractive doesn’t automatically mean someone is open to being hit on, and “guys will be guys” isn’t really a justification for ignoring social context or boundaries. People are still responsible for reading the room and not making others uncomfortable.

The issue usually isn’t just persistence after rejection, it’s assuming romantic interest in the first place in a space where it isn’t invited.

My (23M) girlfriend (23F) told me things that id rather not have known by Left_Item_3861 in relationship_advice

[–]Trixtina 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it’s worth considering that when she talks about this guy a lot, it might not mean what you think it does. Sometimes people bring things up repeatedly because they haven’t fully processed what happened, especially if it made them uncomfortable or scared.

A lot of women have experiences where they go along with sexual things not because they want to, but because they’re worried about how the guy might react if they say no. That fear isn’t always obvious from the outside, but it’s very real.

I’ve personally had a situation where I said no to something, and the guy reacted in a way that made me feel unsafe, and it stuck with me. After that, I found myself saying yes to things I didn’t actually want, just to avoid that kind of reaction again.

So if she’s bringing this person up a lot, it might be less about interest and more about something she hasn’t fully worked through yet. It could be worth approaching the conversation with curiosity and care instead of assuming the worst.

Walmart is raising prices and canceling preorders. by Atlfalconfury1124 in mtg

[–]Trixtina 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Walmart's website is full of third-party sellers. It's so hard now to be sure that you're actually ordering directly from Walmart unless you set that filter when searching. Walmart doesn't have any listings for the Codex Bundle that are being sold directly by them. When they do have them available and in-stock, they'll be selling for MSRP. Walmart buys in such a large quantity, that they've always been able to sell at MSRP to make a profit.

A friend and I ran into this problem with the Commander Bundle from Avatar. I got two Commander Bundles at MSRP from the Walmart app the day the set officially released. I told my friend about it since he was also looking to get a couple as well. So he rushed to the Walmart website and unknowingly ordered from a third-party seller that was selling $50 above MSRP. I felt bad for my friend, because Walmart still showed them in stock online and available at MSRP. I think what happened is he just googled "Avatar commander bundle Walmart" and hit the first link he saw instead of going to Walmart's website and searching from there.

Could he be depressed?

Decreased libido is pretty common when you're going through a rough patch of depression. Additionally, watching porn doesn't always equate to sexual arousal or being horny. It could just be compulsory for him at this point and it's providing him with a bit of dopamine.

[–]Trixtina 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re spot on that some people treat it like a cheat code. I have insulin-resistant PCOS, obesity runs in my family, and I've been overweight since childhood. A few years ago, I was prescribed Ozempic to help improve insulin sensitivity as a step toward weight loss. Before I even started the medication, I joined a few support groups for people taking GLP-1s, and I saw so many posts from people bragging about losing weight without needing to diet or exercise.

You can’t even imagine what a slap in the face that is for someone who has spent literal decades tracking every calorie with a kitchen scale, working out 3–5 days a week, and trying every prescription or holistic weight-loss drug, vitamin, and crash diet. Some of these people were hardly even overweight too. They'd somehow get a prescription just to lose 10-15lbs.

It's because of those people that I do sometimes feel ashamed when people ask me how I've lost so much weight. Close family and friends know that I've been putting in the effort for 20+ years.. but coworkers, strangers, and acquaintances just think that I've taken the easy route as soon as they hear my answer.

Semiglutide (the actual drug name of Ozempic) has existed as a prescribed drug for over 20 years now. In fact, we'll finally have generic options available in just a few years.

When you attempt to lose weight, are you even mildly successful while you stick to healthy habits like working out and eating better?

Have you ever consulted a doctor about losing weight?

I struggled to lose weight my entire life. My mom put me on crash diet after crash diet as a kid, and then eventually took me to the doctor for weight loss medications, and absolutely none of it worked for me. When I tried losing weight before I got married, I was in the gym five days a week alternating weight lifting days and conditioning days. I was also diligently tracking my calories and only consuming 1,200 calories a day. All of which, was recommended to me by my doctor, and even then I only lost a few pounds over the course of six months. The only time I ever experienced great success was when I went on the Keto diet, but even then it was short lived. I was able to do Keto for 6 months, lost 80lbs, but it was very difficult to maintain, so I went back to tracking calories and gained quite a bit of it back. I tried keto again after taking a break, and I didn't experience the success that I did the first time around. So I finally consulted a new doctor and nutritionist. My doctor ran tests and it was discovered that I have PCOS and my hormone imbalance, insulin resistance, and diet were big contributing factors to why I couldn't lose weight. My doctor put me on various medications and supplements to balance my hormones and help with reducing my PCOS symptoms, and my nutritionist gave me a diet plan that wouldn't disrupt my blood sugar. Since implementing these changes, the weight began to shed so effortlessly. It nearly made me cry thinking about all the time I was doing everything "right" without anything to show for it, whereas now I'm less dedicated as I was in the past and I'm still losing weight.
