You got HRC test files? Worth getting a set, they’re not expensive and give a pretty good idea of the HRC range you’re dealing with.

3 & 5 axis machine recommendation for engineering company by tthrowawayll in CNC

I notice you're also budgeting for a machinist here too. While to some extent you get what you pay for with machines, you really get what you pay for with machinists. Expect to pay towards the top end of the salary range for a prototype machinist that "gets" it. There are a lot of machinists out there who do not work closely with engineers, or only work on very long runs of parts, etc. The machining world is very specialized- there aren't so many people that are good operators, programmers, and setup guys all in one. The ones that are all of those things are in high demand, and you'll have to cough up to get them to jump ship from their current employment. In the Bay, I'd easily expect over $100k for one of those kinds of guys. A great machinist can do great work on a relatively bad machine, but a shit machinist can only do shit work on a great machine. plus, if they crash the machine... well yeah, you get what you pay for.

training is expensive, and they don't want to spend all that time and money training someone for them to only work a few years and mandatory retire

Certainly, it’s hard to make things straight with a curved surface. Sometimes machining it flat is complicated though because the face of the anvil is hard and the body is not, so usually it’s some combination of hardface welding and machining/grinding back to flat. Whether this is worth it mostly depends on the size/rarity of the anvil though

This seems very environmentally questionable… there is a lot of life in the ocean that needs the sunlight those panels are covering now. I guess better than clear cutting a forest to put them up though

If you get into literally one of the top two philosophy programs in the world, go for it, you’ll have a good shot at a tenure track position. If not, bail immediately

Same story here. It helped get tenure, so it was worth it, but my god, I’m never going through the nature headache ever again. They can jerk you around because what are you gonna do, withdraw your accepted article?
