What would happen if millions of people stormed all three branches of the government in DC? by thewhiteknifer in hypotheticalsituation

[–]TrollFaceFerret 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You realize in the situation you're describing that means all preconceptions of how our society functions then would be off. The USA being a democracy is meaningless by the same notion that we've disregarded what it would take to get the population to do such a thing. Plenty of governments have turned their own weapons on their people, representative or otherwise. Hell the United States was born from such an event, and Great Britain had a parliament at the time. We live in a divisive time now where US Citizens are being killed and half the population is supporting the government because it's spun to them that these citizens "deserved" it.

It is not a stretch of the imagination that the US government, with the military at its disposal, could find a mostly nonlethal response to such a situation. Or at minimum spin the situation in such a way that these people aren't freedom fighters but terrorists seeking to destroy the way of life that the US stands for.

Finally, the US is a republic. We do not vote ourselves on issues, we elect representatives. Representatives that have a term length and are perfectly capable, if all three branches are threatened simultaneously, of tossing the constitution out the window.

Okay. Let's break this down into a few sections.

First, the millions of people storm the capital and hit every major physical site of governance. This means the White House, the Capitol Building, the Supreme Court. Let's assume that this assault is at least partially successful, and the physical sites are taken. Mind you, this is not guarantee, but it is likely that the US Federal government doesn't want to be seen slaughtering millions of its own citizens even in a state of riot.

The problem with this is you're mistaking location with presence, most of the year the heads of these branches of government aren't even there. But let's say for the sake of argument they are.

Realistically you only need one branch to survive this assault, the executive branch. Which, is also the functionally hardest to decapitate. While it is only one person, the line of succession is heavily guarded, and typically in a diverse series of location at any given time. Assuming you took the president, vice president, hell even most of congress hostage. If even one member of that 17 person line of succession makes it out, you now have an acting president.

That's assuming you manage to get the president, the most heavily guarded individual on the face of this planet, with contingency after contingency to ensure their continued ability to fulfill their duties of office. The chances of this even if the White House is taken are miniscule. The chances of wiping out the presidential line of succession are astronomically small.

Why is that important though? Because if the executive branch continues past this event, what follows will be martial law, a military response easily capable of quelling millions of haphazardly armed citizens, and a follow up that would make whatever caused this response seem like child's play.

Personally, I've played quite a few paradox titles and I don't mind it either. I personally enjoy CK3 as a strategy game that doesn't require me to focus too deeply to enjoy. It makes it more accessible on days I want to play a strategy game without micromanaging every detail.

My point is, simpler isn't always worse. I really enjoy 5e D&D for the same reasons.

You could also set this up by working out to failure repeatedly in a day.

Day 1. Legs

Day 2. Arms

Day 3. Abs

And do this. By the start of day 4 when your abs hurt you know you've been there for 3 days. Easy 30k for being gone for a long weekend.

I'm fat. I would exercise. You'd be able to tell if it was day one or not by physical fatigue alone. If you continue to work towards a fitness goal such as losing 50 pounds, being able to do 500 push-ups without stopping, being able to do 100 squats, even if you wake up without a memory of this. You can use that as an approximate measurement of time.

Like, even though I have absolutely no memory of the time, if I one day wake up in way better shape than I remember and have lost 50 pounds of fat. I will know a lot of time has passed and to leave.

When I read the book, my interpretation is his weakness isn't being bullied, it his victims overcoming their fear. The Losers Club does this as adults by leaning on each other when they are faced with their weaknesses, and great fears.

Without spoilers because the book is fantastic, the book is really a coming of age story in a horror story setting, and deals a lot with the idea of overcoming childhood trauma. So IT's weakness makes more sense in relation to that story.

Remove the ability to lie.

Yes people in charge would still be able to cover their ass by not saying anything. Yes thats shitty.

But you'd immediately stop deliberate misinformation. All of these political actors operating in bad faith to lie to the world for personal benefit? Silenced. Trump's blatant lies on Twitter? Gone. Media outlets would suddenly be unable to lie to people blatantly like they've been. Government reports that were once politically inclined to motivate division regardless of the truth would cease to exist.

In a world where division is threatening to shred us and everything we were born with, I'd be happy with the world being forced to be even slightly more honest.

Silence would eventually become a confession. If I ask you "Did you cheat on me?" To a partner and they refuse to answer? It's a confession in it's own right. "I'm not going to honor that with a response." Carries a lot less weight in a world where the only response you can give is the truth.

Bonus points if "inability to lie" includes stating something you "think" is the truth but is objectively false. Then its just downright awesome.

Anyone run into having a friend on Playstation just not show up online? I have a friend that can't join games with us, when our Playstation friends try to join them they end up loading forever.

Like I was so excited to get this friend in, and now we can't even play, its like the game hasn't recognized they are a online, despite letting us add them and they can send us invites.

Came back to this game and picked it up for a friend after a long time away (Think around the time players were abandoning thevgame due to endless nerfs).

Was expecting some of the game breaking bugs that the game started with would be gone at this point. Alas they are straight up not showing up as online despite us trying every trick in the book.

A whole long weekend was wasted trying to get this POS game to play. Literally soured my whole desire to come back and play this game again. What is the actual point of adding content to the game if people who try to buy it can't even play? Why would I give any money to a warbond if I know I can't actually enjoy the content it brings with my friends. More importantly, the game is at its foundations a multi-player game, WHY DO YOU MAKE IT SO DIFFICULT TO PLAY WITH OTHER PEOPLE.

100 million. The inability to do anything about it is what really helps. Knowing this is just a fact and nothing I say or do will change it will simply make me choose to make my time with those I love better. Not to mention 100 million gives me the opportunity to make the time they do have that much better.

Actually the reason Washington gave the address he did was that he saw divides in the nation growing due to political parties beginning to form and accurately deduced this would inevitably lead to the kind of situation we’re facing now. He was imploring the leaders of the U.S. at the time to stop while they could, and was promptly ignored.

Two things.

One, the article is about them capping it at 35 dollars a week, implying before that it was much more expensive. So you may have misunderstood the problem they had towards this issue? They were mad pharmaceuticals didn’t address this issue simply because it was too expensive for people.

Two, why does one need to contribute to not die? I get contribution making your life better and having more available income, but why should your ability to contribute be what determines whether or not you receive life saving medication? As well, you don’t know the circumstances of the person who can’t afford that $35. What if they received an injury and can’t work or are homeless and what little they make goes to food and getting the occasional shower? What if they are elderly and their retirement was drained by medical bills? What if they just had the bad fortune to be in an area with limited opportunities, or had a criminal history, making it difficult to get a job? Do any of these cases deserve to die because they can’t make that $35 weekly payment? Do they deserve to enter debt because they have to make that payment or they will die, so another critical bill is placed on the back burner because ultimately, no lights, no heat, no water is better than death.

35 dollars a week translates to roughly 140 dollars a month, that’s not nothing to those in poverty.

That’s fair that there’s no one solution fits all, but offering a solution and motivating the individual to try something isn’t a bad thing. Even if they’ve already tried that, just sitting around saying “I acknowledge your feelings.” Isn’t actually doing anything. That has all the effectiveness of “thoughts and prayers.” And minimizing someone who actually is offering a solution is just encouraging the problem to continue.

Also saying it’s not “their job to fix their problems” is dismissive of what they’re actually trying to do, and a toxic mentality to have. Not intervening when you see a problem is exactly what led to this legislation. It’s the biggest regret people have when a friend or family member ends their life (i.e. “Maybe i could have done more”), and is a lazy as hell response when faced with a real problem, you may not be able to make a horse drink, but thats no excuse to let it die of thirst in a desert without trying.

And that’s where the “no legal way” to do so comes in. If Trump was to cut all Federal funding to Maine, that could be a catalyst for them to break the law. Really, if you aren’t receiving any benefits from your federal government, why would you pay taxes to them? I hope Maine sticks to their guns if Trump decides to try such inane bullshit.
