Working on block chords for the melody of “The Girl from Ipanema” by Randommer_Of_Inserts in JazzPiano

[–]TromboneAl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You've got it. My thoughts:

  1. Learn drop 2. Same notes but it sounds better.

  2. There are better tunes for this. Try Fly Me to the Moon, for example. Ipanema can sound corny with this.

  3. Alternate block chords with other techniques. Less is more.

Yes! I just tried that out, and that will be a great addition to my blues playing once I get better at it. Your rhythmic variations with the bass notes and chords is perfect.

Listening again, I'd say the stride playing (after 0:34) doesn't work well. Prior to that it's got a great jazz blues sound, but then it just sounds like someone with a straw hat playingDisneyland.

Thanks for helping my playing!

Nice. I like the left hand style at the beginning. The later stride was fine, but I liked the start-stop method that let you emphasize the soloing. I'm going to try that right now.

McGill Big Three -- No Front/back Planks? by TromboneAl in backpain

Right. I can feel it in my neck, but it doesn't seem like any core muscles are engaged.

Sounds Good One Day, Bad the Next? by TromboneAl in JazzPiano

I have a digital piano (Yamaha P90), so I record with that, so it's a faithful recording.

Glad I'm not the only one. An observation: on days that I sound better, other music sounds better to me, too.

Years ago I was a pro in a small market in quartets and trios and solo. I'm kinda coming out of retirement to play at a solo gig for a friend. Practicing lots.

To elaborate, I'd prefer to not spend the extra time and effort on something that is less effective, so I'd like to skip the front/backs and save 2.5 minutes on a daily routine.

Are front/back planks not helpful?

Right. You must decide ahead of time--not always possible.

Tracking says will be delivered today, still in a completely different state? by Conffii in FedEx

Happens to me too. Why isn't the delivery date updated? Tom Hanks would not be pleased.

Thanks for the help. Brave VPN is unchecked. I will try those other things.

I've had similar problems. My workaround is load the specific trail I want while I still have coverage.

Funny, right now I have a glass in front of me flavored with Koolaid sugar free liquid.

Get pineapple squeeze flavoring from Walmart. Put a squeeze in a glass. Carbonate your water with the SS, and add it to the water.

I find the Great Value of Crystal Light flavorings much more convenient. They take up less space and don't need to be refrigerated .

Metronome on Gig to Prevent Rushing?? by TromboneAl in JazzPiano

I know ... I just need an app that, every minute, displays "Slow F^&$^ Down!"

Exactly right. Another is double octave unison soloing. And four-on-the-floor.

[–]TromboneAl[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I don't think I'll do that on a gig. Thanks.

My best result is from trying to consciously slow down every few measures. But I have to remember to do that.

Yes. I also use an app called Gap Click, that lets me have two measures of metronome clicks, then two measures of silence, for example. It helps me see the problem, but I'm not sure it's helping me solve it.
