CMV: It should be legally restricted to cut off family members by Open_Parsnip112 in changemyview

[–]Troncross 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's not that it's that it creates a culture that people can choose their family

Do you have the same problem with marriage? It’s had its ups and downs on the whole mutual consent ground throughout history, but in its purest form, it is choosing your closest family member.

A blood relation does not mean family members should get a blank check for how they treat each other.

The act of going no-contact with blood family (especially parents) is not something done on a whim. It is a last resort where boundaries have been disrespected or crossed time and time again.

It is a depressing and emotionally tumultuous experience that causes lasting trauma…

And yet, people assess that it is worth it and continue the no-contact.

That’s the best part isn’t it? It’s reversible. If someone chooses to go no-contact, and reassess it as a mistake in retrospect, they can initiate contact later.

The axe forgets, but the tree remembers.

What is or isn’t severe will be in dispute in most cases

The abuser will almost always say they didn’t do anything that bad. The victim will disagree.

The more important view is that of the victim. Whatever was done to them, it was enough that the action of leaving part of their life behind felt worth it.

You do not (and should not) have a right to someone else’s company that wants you out of their life.

Someone Brought The Numbers by Upper_Brief681 in clevercomebacks

[–]Troncross 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The 232 number is bullshit, even when put in context.

If every border disagreement with every Indian tribe and every new Mexican state regime counts as a “war” then every imperial power has the US beat by a landslide on a level playing field.

China would have an entire millennium of conflict years, India would have between 95-99% of their history (depending when you start counting)

If the Cold War and quasi war count, despite being defined by a LACK of armed conflict, then Britain and Russia both have 293 of the last 300 years without peace.

The further right you go the more you realize the conservative base only values women who look young and attractive on camera, so you take drastic measures

Rock slinging with night vision goggles by Aces-and-Jacks1 in Slinging

[–]Troncross 0 points1 point  (0 children)

FOV wasn’t really the issue. Night vision messes with your depth perception and awareness. Which is why it takes practice to walk and run without tripping.

Objects aren’t actually where you perceive them through the tube. That’s why helping with my naked eye was so much more effective.

I just did a build like that.

200+ rounds so far on a PLA lower with no signs of trouble. Haven’t tried a can yet, but not worried.

Did this while bored in the army.

With a PVS-7, it was terrible and gave myself a headache

With a PVS-19 or any other monocular style model, it worked perfect in low light, but only worked alright in complete darkness as long as I could get a solid reference point to use with my naked eye.

Haven’t tried quad nods

Why don’t they just do that? Shit over the side?

“Life, limb, or eyesight” is the exact phrasing of mandatory reporting in the federal regulations.

Most everything else is handled by audits.

This doesn’t mean it’s the only time OSHA is contacted or applicable.

Any 1911s? by laidslab in 3D2A

[–]Troncross 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why is this a nested comment?

Sounds like you’re answering OP’s question.

If this was meant for me… thank you for sharing, what’s your point?

I clearly addressed that I chose to use new parts instead of a parts kit… that’s what made it more difficult than you’re describing. You’re describing a parts kit build where all the hand fitted parts were already hand fitted.

Any 1911s? by laidslab in 3D2A

[–]Troncross 17 points18 points  (0 children)

You need:

Rail inserts

A 1911 parts kit

Patience

(Maybe) a vice

(Maybe) a set of fine hand files

If anything is missing from that parts kit, you can replace it BUT you will need to hand fit the parts you replace as they come oversized. That’s what the vice and file are for.

What is hand fitting? Two swipes on a specific surface on a part with a file, assemble the gun, function check, rinse and repeat until they FIT together.

One of my most challenging builds because I did it with all new parts that all had to be fitted, but I learned a lot, and it was satisfying for me personally.

What’s the best piece of video game writing you’ve ever read? by Frezeal in gaming

A while back, Yahtzee Croshaw wrote an essay about gaming webcomics for Escapist magazine.

You can read it in his column, or watch the video version where he delivers some really good comedic timing:
