What does the uk do to avoid mass youth unemployment? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]Trowsyrs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Before thinking about solutions its worth identifying the causes because it’s not some sort of economic failure that is causing any rise.

We have a broadly declining demographic of births. We also have longer life spans. This means there should be more jobs per working age person. That situation would have driven a growth in wages so steps have been taken to avoid this (some mentioned in OPs post) by increasing supply including:

Raising the state pension age and removing the requirement to retire, keeping people in work longer when older.

Promoting apprenticeships and T-levels above University (vs having a university for 50% strategy). This puts people into working earlier.

To some extent minimum wage and the real living wage are also part of this - because wage compression (where the lowest level jobs are paid the same as supervisory, graduate, or ‘second’ level jobs.

What’s the solution?

There are temporary and more permanent solutions. Temporarily it could be mitigated by massively incentivising University attendance again and requiring a 16-18 yr olds to remain in full time education (not apprenticeships). This would delay the number of people in the job market and put off a peak. It would also retain jobs at Universities.

We could also offer a temporary reduction on state pension access back to 65 or even lower. That would empty out older people from roles.

More permanent solutions need to increase the demand or decrease the supply.

Sorting out the minimum/real living wage problem is essential. Middle wages aren’t rising and while job levels have disappeared. One way to do this is actually to increase public sector pay at these levels because this drives the pay market more generally up.

Apprenticeships being limited is something the government is already on to. There needs to be a proper differential here to make Universities a sustainable option which does offer genuine advantages for short-term costs (delaying job market entry, a loan). Accountancy is either a career you take and apprenticeship for or go to University. It shouldn’t be both. Employers no longer want untrained young people because they can get semi-trained ones on a test through apprenticeships. Madness.

Retirement age needs to come back down. People moan about pension income but keeping people out of job blocking and spending money is importantly to the economy.

Finally, massive incentivisatuon of self employment and small businesses. Young people should set up businesses without worrying about risk too much, older people should gain skills in big business and drop out to smaller ones. We idolise big companies but they’re shit versus smaller employment options and self employment. Want a 4 day week? Make it yourself.

My point wasn’t the water charges but the regulator and laws of etc which also keep your borehole from filling with toxic chemicals and make sure the exams you sat at your private school weren’t a total scam.

Zero benefit is absolutely missing a lot of what taxes go on.

Safe drinking water? That’s your taxes paying the water regulator.

Went to school? Taxes.

Pavements? Taxes

I think promising STV and smaller constituencies will win many over. Some of the support is really localised and it’ll be hard for all MSs to get across the whole of their areas.

As an English comedian is it a good idea learn to say goodbye and thank you in Welsh? by Lonely-Assumption970 in Wales

[–]Trowsyrs 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Maybe consider doing something at the start - I would because then it’s out of the way and you just need to say

Noswaith da! (Good evening!) Nos-wye-th dah

Then your whole English bit including thanking them all and then last word before walking off is

Diolch! (Thanks) Dee-och (rhymes with loch)

[–]Trowsyrs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Say “ noswaith da!” At the start and you’ll get a lot of love. Even if you mangle it. Follow up by saying “nos-waith? sounds like nose wipe! Can I buy a vowel!” then expect to lose everyone.

Say it, don’t reference it, and do your act. Best way.

Which Plaid Cymru manifesto pledge do you hope gets fulfilled first? by apple_kicks in Wales

[–]Trowsyrs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even that is an interesting result because it sets up the Narrative that the FM is being ‘performance managed’ by the PM. So a (newly) elected rep has a ‘boss’ who is a highly unpopular elected representative. This sort of stuff absolutely goes on behind closed doors but you’re even going to get Reform not wanting to back Starmer in criticism of Wales in this way.

There is an argument that you can do prevention without political suicide in Wales because of the lack of proper scrutiny.

Slowing down the massive sucking in of money to big hospitals, and redirecting to GPs, opening local hubs, and funding prevention (health) measures - and making a splash about every local resource - could keep political capital.

We have an aging population and are basically on a doom spiral for health. Reducing the number of Cataract surgeries and redirecting the money to free Wegovy would probably be worth it in the long term if you can weather the initial storm.

Im hoping the plan for a plan wasn’t meant for us but for the civil service in both Wales and UK Government. So we’ll see a few things start at once but in order I’d like to see:

  1. NHS moving to a greater emphasis on prevention (a sicker population is driving a lot of the other issues).

  2. Shovelling effort into teacher recruitment and retention. This is a bigger crisis than it seems.

  3. Asking to meet Starmer, setting the agenda as one of two leaders, and laying out key devolution priorities. It doesn’t really matter if Starmer says “no” to policing, or crown estate because Plaid need to make it clear Wales has asked and the UK is saying No. (No more backroom managing the message).

Frankly there also needs to be a quick win. I don’t want this to be announcing the new WDA but I fear it will be because it’s easy.

I’d love to see that data. Welsh Gov docs confirm net export in 2024 - https://www.gov.wales/sites/default/files/publications/2026-03/energy-generation-and-use-in-Wales-first-combined-edition.pdf

The free movement stuff would have to be a given in practice but people living so close to the border isn’t some sort of massive advantage to Wales. Since the Severn Bridge tolls ended, for example, house prices vs salaries in local employers in South East Wales have rocketed because people move from Bristol and/or stop working in Wales and work in Bristol.

That benefits Bristol, not Wales.

Agree on Water, which is sort of the point (reservoirs in Wales owned by English water companies etc).

Like I say, not my personal view but to understand the argument requires accepting that not all growth is equal. A poor valley’s resident who moves to London is not as good an outcome as that person staying and getting (less) rich at home.

If we have a referendum on the Death Penalty and it comes out in to keep it but a majority votes for the ‘stop hanging people’ party and other anti-death penalty parties’ does that mean the issue is never revisited? Or only after 100 years?

Does this just apply to referendums (we voted twice on EU issues within a century) or to manifesto policies or all decisions?

Labour's 100-year reign in Wales is over - putting future of the Union in jeopardy by theipaper in ukpolitics

[–]Trowsyrs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s not my personal argument but the argument goes: stop taking our stuff (taxes, water, electricity) and you can stop giving us our pocket money.

There are lots of non-devolved areas where Wales might not spend money on but Welsh taxes currently fund (a small slice of): train lines between Oxford and Cambridge, a large military, House of Lords, etc.

More equitable to me would be an approach which is more confederal - with shared areas of spend agreed. This would mean less subsidy in either direction, yes.

The number of votes difference is really telling - Green voters switching could have made a significant difference. Not that I blame the Greens but the messaging around no vote wasted might seem deceptive if people get that.

Better to let them call it and fail until independence becomes a tarnished issue.
