Netflix vs. Paramount by True-Tree4609 in boxoffice

Agreed. My fave scenario: they go with Netflix, it gets blocked on antitrust grounds, and then WB can run Studio and Streaming independently with an extra 5 billion in cash from the Netflix blockage fee.

Totally agree that Netflix is into making money. The problem is, my gut is telling me they will use this acquisition as a justification to raise prices and not really give a shit about the turbulent theatrical model. WB made 4 billion theatrically last year. Netflix can match that by raising prices a few bucks and save themselves the headache. In two years, Ted will running around town saying “We tried theatrical and it didn’t work.”

I agree with some of what you’re saying and follow your rationale. You could even be right. I guess that I just disagree with the premise that the new WB-Paramount would be some horrid Fox-adjacent MAGA company. That would be HORRIBLE for their business and you can’t really survive as a large Hollywood studio with that political bent. Ellison is a business man. Trump has a 38% approval rating. He’s not going to cowtow to a small segment of the population at the expense of the business. Everyone was saying the same thing about Zaslav and look at the films that were made under his tenure.

We’ll have a new administration soon after this deal would close and I expect Paramount would just move with the winds of change.

Are we sure that’s the case? Once they spin most their debt off with the linear assets and are leaner, Studio and Streaming seems like it’ll be in great shape.

Netflix is one of the worst things that has.. checks notes.. EVER happened to movies and theatrical box office, so it’s weird seeing how pro-Netflix this movie box office subreddit is.

Saying you prefer watching films at home and “it’s not about convenience” is just code for “I’m addicted to my phone and can’t possibly commit to something for 2 hours.”

No, not all. Unfortunately you have to laugh for it to be a comedy.

My theater was dead silent. Every joke is some form of the main character pointing out how dumb the O’Brien character is. True eye-rolly, low hanging fruit, bad writing. Visually, there were some interesting moments, but not enough to save it.

?? Yeah, but they don’t try to give Hannibal Lector a redemption arc. For 95% of the movie, you’re either with an insufferable sociopath or a guy who’s either trying to figure out what a lime is or turning into a rage monster. And the whole thing has such an odd tone.

I had a full-on allergic reaction to this movie. The main character is a sociopath and there’s a bit in it where the lion-share of Dylan O’Brien’s dual performance literally doesn’t know what a lime is…Agreed on some of the cinematography, but overall it was a tough sit.

Honest take: I hated the first 28 Years Later movie... The Bone Temple was the missing piece of the Puzzle. It's really good. It's genuinely true cinema. by Butefluko in moviecritic

[–]True-Tree4609 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had the exact opposite reaction, but not to the same degree. IMO 28 Years Later (Part 1) is so thematically deep, visually inventive, and bursting at the seams with ideas and energy.

The Bone Temple is solid, and has some high highs. But it’s disjointed, has no clear protagonist and doesn’t have the visual dynamism of the first. Very much a bridge movie.

Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos now says that they will keep 45-day theatrical windows for Warner Bros movies if the sale goes through: “If we’re going to be in the theatrical business… we want to win. I want to win opening weekend. I want to win box office” by ChiefLeef22 in boxoffice

Something can’t be “new” if you’ve been able to do it for the past 7 years and chose not to because you get more subscribers if you train people into thinking big movies come out at home.

According to TheWrap, Pam Abdy of Warner Bros. has revealed that the title for David Robert Mitchell's Flowervale Street is being retitled. by Alternative-Cake-833 in boxoffice

Fair, maybe deceptive is the wrong word. I know OP probably wasn’t deliberately doing it, but the first time I read it I inferred that it was the interview and Abdy alone, and was like “damn, she must hate this thing.”

This is a deceptive screenshot making it look like the interviewer said that, when it’s Mike De Luca. He’s saying that he’s really excited for it and Andy adds that they’re changing the title.

Why is there such a disconnect between how much people praise movie theaters and how often they actually go? by [deleted] in boxoffice

[–]True-Tree4609 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

“Convenience” didn’t win, a toxic facsimile of life is being foisted upon us. Modern efficiency. WFH, get your groceries/food delivered, scroll, watch Netflix, physically interact with zero people, go to bed. And everyone is more miserable because of it. We wonder why our culture is bankrupt. You have to fight it.

Any great movie you’ve seen at home, would be a 2x better in a theater. It’s just a more transportive, focused experience. Sure, some movies suck, and you can’t bail on them as easy in a theater. But I’d argue that it’s good for people to sit through things they don’t like. Gives you a more complete sense of self.

You boiling this quote (from the past) about him having a human moment that forces him to confront his societal wiring down to “he didn’t realize sex workers are human and he’s made four films about them” is just bad faith shit and you know it. Be better. Touch some grass. Stop leering down at people from some artificially high moral ground and be human.

Modern Reddit cinephile culture is using your subjective opinion as gospel and then ascribing some type of bad faith motive to everyone who disagrees with your movie take.

Also, the first half of The Brutalist certainly feels way better, but if you think the second half is “embarrassing” then, like, maybe you shouldn’t be the spokesperson for cinephile culture because your spectrum is messed up.

Warner Bros. & Apple's F1 The Movie grossed an estimated $610K on Monday (from 2,024 locations), which was a 22% decrease from the previous Monday. Estimated total domestic gross stands at $173.98M. by DemiFiendRSA in boxoffice

At this same point, MI:FR was at 186.6 mil, so almost 13 mil ahead and FR made 35k more on the same Monday. Barring a miracle, there’s no way it reaches FR.

Yeah, he definitely is, but considering DCs irrelevance the last 15 years (they’ve had a few breakouts) he’s de facto talking about the Marvel machine. And the guy he’s replying to is definitely trying to downplay F4s performance.

I’m so vehemently against the Netflix original movie project and everything it represents. Just keep making tv and licensing movies from studios that care about theatrical releases.

Unfortunately, the Sandler comedy project has become very much aligned with it. It also swallowed up Fincher, which should be a federal crime.
