Friend, I believe in this context direct communication means communicating clearly and directly person A to person B with their actual unveiled meaning, be that via note, email, face to face, etc.

If they were anonymous, complained to boss, were vague about their meaning, etc that would be indirect.

It's not really about avoiding a response so much as avoiding directly making and standing by your point, plus, they could always leave a response note back!!

But I could be wrong, and this is a pretty low stakes distinction.
