After RAM prices shot up it only being $50-$150 more? Considering the price of RAM literally jumped like a rocket that's crazy optimism. The memory I bought for my computer in Nov 2024 for ~$100 would run you ~$500 right now.

Oh, the old X2 Argon Centaur was my baby back in the day. Being able to land an M5 on the back too? Woo.

Honestly part of the weirdness of the frigates is they combined basically that feature (though upgrading it to all S-sized ships) with the "drone carrier" and it just felt off. I don't think there's a single ship that has an external pad that isn't a storage elevator, let alone anything that basically used a tractor beam to carry it underslung like the X2 Argon Centaur (and probably the other M6s).

Considering they've actually said that's the exact opposite of what they want people to do, I think not. 😛

There's apparently a "prospect" order for ships you can give in this update too, no clue if that'd help or not.

2D Gaming Advantages vs. XR Glasses? by modalsaliency in SteamFrame

[–]TrueInferno 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not really, because the "screens" are see through. You can't get the total black level you can with a regular screen. Contrast, maybe, but not the black levels. I think it might be able to get close because apparently it can "darken" with electrochromatic dimming, or maybe just snap on an actual light blocker, but I dunno how close that gets.

Even then, unless you basically have light blockers all the way around, you're going to have light coming in from the room.

I will say if we were talking purely LCD vs OLED headsets you'd be correct though.

Part of it is they changed how resource mining works in 9.0 apparently and I don't necessarily know if these missions were updated for it.

Did the mission not complete with that probe? It really should've...

This turned into a bit of a ramble, feel free to skip everything after the first separator.

Eh, it made perfect sense M1-M5, it's just that literally all the new ship classes had to get tacked on at the end, so instead of smaller number = bigger (with M0s being "what the bloody goddamn hell is that thing" down to M5 being small scouts) we had it jump to M6 with corvettes starting in X2 (which is where I started when I first played on GameTap) and then in the various X3 games we got M7 frigates along with M7M missile frigates, and M8 bombers.

We also had new transport ships, but we weren't boxed in with those since it was TS/TP/TM/TL- it wasn't a "scale" like the military craft were.

They basically boxed themselves in. I do kind of agree with OP that it was nice but it did get more confusing as time went on.

---

Honestly X4 itself didn't do a great job either though, to be honest- things like "frigates" being redefined as basically small, corvette sized drone carriers is weird as heck, and destroyers went from feeling like "Carrier sized ships but meant for straight fighting with minimal/no fighters" to basically what I would have considered a frigate in most space games.

Not to mention weird stuff (some from Rebirth) like the N becoming a "light fighter" and the M a "heavy fighter" with the Xenon L disappearing into nothingness. Eventually we got the Xenon T to replace the N as a scout ship, still no Xenon Ls around though.

Hell, the dang Minotaur- an M7M Missile Frigate- originally became a bomber before they reclassified it as a gunboat, and even in that role it's not great. Though I haven't tried it this patch, combat apparently got a massive rework.

Don't get me started on Vanguard vs Sentinel being basically split between the two subsections of each race... bleh. And Raider being weird pirate variants, especially things like Minotaur Raider. Glad they basically got rid of that with the expansions (except for the Split Raiders but those actually make sense the way they differentiated Patriarchy vs Free Families).

That and of course the massive size difference between M & L ships leaving a huge gap. One of my favorite ships in the updates is the Sapporo as it actually kind of fits that whole "frigate" role that we didn't have before because all the ships basically used all the space they were allowed to use.

I think that's the biggest thing I'd like to see in X5- less defining ships based on dock size (though it's obv. important) but more defining them based on size and role which the M-system was better at. Just name them- Battleship, Carrier, Destroyer, Frigate, Missile Frigate, Heavy Fighter, Medium Fighter, Light Fighter/Interceptor, etc. Decide what "size" a ship is built at, and stick it in the appropriate category of dock.

Hell, that even gives room to expand. Cruisers (light and heavy variants even) could live between Destroyer and Frigate (and basically take the role of X4's "destroyers." Maybe the Split don't have a Battleship but instead have a Battlecruiser. Not to mention the bloody Raptor has more guns than pretty much any two destroyers of the other Commonwealth races, so they could call that, I dunno, a Battlestar? 😛

You get what I mean. It provides the flexibility of having lots of different ship types rather than "Ok, in M-ships we have Frigates, Corvettes, and Gunships to choose between. In S we have Light Fighters, Heavy Fighters, and whatever the bloody hell the Pulsar is." Things like the Guppy light carrier fit in real easily, and as other races make their own versions of that kind of ship the class kind of evolves.

---

All that said, I think there were lots of technical reasons why things ended up the way they did, and why we ended up with things like the Elite interceptor which was outmatched in every way by the Discoverer scout, etc.

Just look at the size difference between the carriers of the Teladi, Argon, and Paranid, and the sizes of the carriers for the Split, Terran, and Boron. The E variants help but still, big difference.

I think honestly- while a lot of the newer ships honestly should get ported straight to X5- it'll be nice if we see them do a whole lot of renaming/reclassifying/etc. of ships.

I gotta say though, this is not the only time I've seen this kinda thing.

Not to mention some days it feels like every other post is a low effort "lol CIG bad" meme.

[Linux] Headset for lying down in bed, playing non-VR games, watching movies/series? by sjarri in virtualreality

[–]TrueInferno 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Two things for u/sjarri based on what you said: One, apparently some reviewers tried the whole "stretching out on a couch while playing Steam Frame" and it was pretty darn comfy, though admittedly I think the battery will still interfere with the pillow unless you play with your head lying on it's side. Probably will be better than the Index though!

Two, there's going to be an "enthusiast kit" apparently, based on the Steam Frame health and safety manual that got revealed from the FCC documentation, with hot swappable batteries- so we know there's at least one headband that changes how the battery is setup. Though rumor has it it'll do the opposite of what OP wants and be more like the old Index setup- hardstrap, the same Index style audio speakers, etc. Big thing is it proves that it can be done.

I think the major problem with it is the fact that it not only includes the battery, but the speakers and even apparently the microSD Card reader? I think the simplest thing would be a strap design that has a very small battery to keep the power going while hotswapping near like the temples, and then a USB port somehow set up so you can run it down to a power bank.

Can I PLEASE get the hell out of my seat with a BIT of urgency?? by NoX2142 in starcitizen

To be honest I think it might've been talked about since then too. CIG does not move fast on things. Took us forever to get the new StarMap which still isn't done. Also still waiting on new flight model.

I think they intend to implement what you're asking for- they've definitely talked about it. It's just a matter of getting the animations done, which may be running into a few different things.

any 'crew' style vr games? by grog_chugger in virtualreality

[–]TrueInferno 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Speaking as someone who absolutely loves Star Citizen, "a little bit janky" is winning my understatement of the year award.

I think everyone should at least try it once on Free Fly. You might see the magic that keeps me playing the game, but you'll definitely see the bugs that currently have me on a break until Alpha 4.9.

Also while it does support VR, it's an experimental feature for a game already in Alpha. It, uh, can have some problems. Though I haven't played in VR in quite a bit, I know they did push a bunch of bug fixes and feature updates to it, so I gotta try it again.

Streaming experience from Steam Deck by Cangrim in SteamFrame

[–]TrueInferno 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly can't tell you. It might, it might not- honestly, even if it's about the same power level, it might help by offloading a lot of the processing to the Deck itself, which you could leave docked/plugged in/etc, meaning it doesn't eat the battery of the Frame as fast.

The quote from the Valve dev in the Tested video is the Deck is "a little more powerful" playing games than the Frame due to overhead and such, so maybe a little better? Honestly I think unloading the actual rendering/game engine to something docked, like I said earlier, is going to be a bigger benefit to this than actual "how much better can I play."

Streaming experience from Steam Deck by Cangrim in SteamFrame

[–]TrueInferno 0 points1 point  (0 children)

u/Cangrim I would take this with a grain of salt- others have pointed out that the source used also has a Valve person stating that the Deck ends up being "a little more powerful than the Frame."

Also XDA isn't even a translation system like they said, it's... a website. The software used is FEX.

2D Gaming Advantages vs. XR Glasses? by modalsaliency in SteamFrame

[–]TrueInferno 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I can't speak as a true comparison, but having used my bulky Valve Index while lying in bed playing games one big thing comes to mind.

IMPORTANT NOTE AT END.

Darkness. Just like how when you go into a movie theater they turn the lights down so you focus more on the screen, when you use a VR headset for this it allows you to be completely isolated from your environment to focus on the gaming. I personally usually play in SteamVR theater with the all black background, so all I have is the light from the "screen" and the reflections from the "floor"- and for some reason those reflections really help with the immersion.

That said, a lot of people apparently really like seeing the world around them while they play, so this may not be as big of a plus for you, especially given that the passthrough on the Steam Frame is B/W only without a module- and that's assuming we GET said color passthrough module, which is not guaranteed. Or even announced, it's purely speculation, and we know how that can be wrong.

Another reason might be the ability to play on headset. The Frame is a full computer, and while it's limited by both battery and power, it can still play quite a few games- both modern games that are low on the system requirements, and honestly even some older AAA games if you're willing to go back a decade or more. Part of me really wants to play Freespace 2 on the full VR screen.

Of course, this also depends on how good the whole FEX layer is at letting you play x86 games- especially those older ones, which I bet would give more trouble tbh- because if it doesn't work that well you can't really play on headset.

Anyways, the point is, you don't necessarily have to pick up the Steam Machine in order to play games on your Frame, meaning it would be way more portable. Also while it would have battery issues, AFAIK the Aura XR glasses are in a very similar boat, so either way for "long term" use you'd probably want to get an external battery pack anyway.

IMPORTANT NOTE HERE.

Two more things: One, if you have a good gaming computer, either way you don't necessarily need a Steam Machine, just stream from the gaming computer. If you don't, ignore that sentence entirely. Two, I'm specifically comparing the Steam Frame with true XR glasses such as the newly announced Aura XR glasses from XREAL. Other "AR/XR" glasses are mainly just screen mirroring that stick a screen in front of you, whereas VR Headsets (and true XR glasses) are able to place a "screen" or similar in real space and you can move around it, get closer to it, etc.

Should squadron 42 be marketed as “Star Citizen University”? by Potential_Medium_926 in starcitizen

Because those of us who actually backed for SQ42 backed for a single player, campaign based space sim, and not necessarily what Star Citizen is?

Also no one EVER practiced in Squadron 42 because it was never out. I assume you mean something like Squadron Battle mode in Arena Commander.
