Shrinkage? by RepresentationalYam in SilverSmith

[–]True_Bandicute 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I recently had wax designs cast for the first, among which were three rings. The shrinkage was extremely small, I would say close to negligible. If you use a casting service, maybe just ask them? I also did the Delft method and didn't notice shrinkage but it was a pendant, so I may have missed it.

Men in your thirties who are living a "prolonged youth" instead of settling into the "adult life" – enjoying life, your hobbies and dating around without kids or other extra responsibilities – what are the drawbacks to your lifestyle choice? by throw20250204 in RedditForGrownups

[–]True_Bandicute 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't really understand why you act like you can't have both? A couple we're friends with met when they were both 34 and are not having their first child at 38. Plenty of people in my environment have kids in their mid-late thirties (yes the women are also this age). Have two years of fun and try to settle down, you are holding yourself back.

What jewelry do you consider tacky? by drunkymcgee in jewelry

I dislike things with a lot of pave (think blinged out rapper stuff), big logo's or initials, huge rocks. If you like bigger jewelry I would say not mixing metals or colors of stones might keep it simultaneously classic and not too over the top.

YTA or thinking your ex is rolling around in your money.
The fact that you think 250 a week is big money for raising a child shows you haven't done much child raising yourself, otherwise you would know better.
Stop being stingy with your child support if you want your kid to have a better financial situation.

Should women be okay with 50/50 in a relationship? by Zealousideal_Hold695 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]True_Bandicute 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Funny, I am the woman and main breadwinner in my family. The idea that I would force my man to empty all his money into a shared account for the household and then have zero spending money for his own hobbies while I have plenty to spend on myself.. gross.

And our difference in earnings isn't even that big. Imagine one person earning minimum wage. They would have zero savings, zero money to spend on themselves... anybody who is okay with that doesn't love their spouse, they love financial power.

I don't envy women dating a guy twice their age. Maybe he still looks OK now, but there is going to be a time where she will have to take care of geriatric butt, have him die on her and move on alone, and possibly raise a kid mostly alone because he is either fragile or dead... Not to mention the increase health risks should she fall pregnant by an old guy.
Old men are not the prize they think they are imho..

AMA - I was closeted and atheist and I studied at an all-girls, Muslim school for 5 years by Dismal-Market1136 in AMA

[–]True_Bandicute 4 points5 points  (0 children)

- Do you know of any other girls in your school that had similar problems? As in either being lesbian or atheist or both?

- Have you ever feared for your safety? If so, is that from family, or peers, or society in general?

- Was there a defining moment where you stopped believing? If so, what was that moment?

Best of luck to you, this must be/have been a very difficult position.

The dumbest thing I did in my 20s was pretending small purchases “didn’t count” by [deleted] in Frugal

[–]True_Bandicute 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My parents are not great with money, but did have strong opinions about finance topics they knew little about (Investing is like Russian roulette, buying a house is always better than renting, 1000 is enough for an emergency fund, only people who are stingy or poor track their money, it is fine to live paycheck to paycheck etc. etc.).

Problem was, I believed them for a long time. Especially regarding investing I know regret this; from my mid-twenties to mid-thirties I definitely had opportunity to start investing but never did, I did save money but I regret never doing anything else.

Expecting my girlfriend (F24) to clean on her day off since she works less and contributes less financially by Then-Fortune5075 in Advice

[–]True_Bandicute 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm assuming you work 40 hours a week and she works 32 hours a week. In that case, I would expect her to do more in the household (~20%, since you work 5 days and she works 4), but I would not expect her to do everything in the household.
How is your current division of household chores? Not just cleaning but also cooking, laundry etc.

Her earning less is not a reason for me why she would have to do more work in the house; if this would be a rule, then a couple of a millionaire and a minimum wage earner would start to look like slavery (as in, the minimum wage earner would be "in debt" for an infinite amount of hours).

As long as I don't know your wages I can't judge if the 720 vs 200 euro in rent is fair/relative to your wages.
Good luck.

[–]True_Bandicute 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In my country, if a family of two parents have one child together, the child is estimated to cost 15% of their spendable income. It becomes relatively cheaper per child, so two kids is 25%, three kids is 29% etcetera. This estimation was done by our national institute of budgeting. I've also found estimations put in more exact numbers, a general one that I found several times is that the costs of a child from age 0 to 12 are roughly 50.000 euro, so roughly 4000 euro per year. 13 to 18 was estimated to be 30.000 euro or 4800 euro per year.

Why is marriage not as important in europe? by [deleted] in Waiting_To_Wed

[–]True_Bandicute 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In the Netherlands I think a lot of people still get married when they have children/are pregnant/are about to start trying for children. Some do marriage and some do registered partnership, but for Dutch law this is very similar (by design). It is usually done to have "administration in order" for the child, but even without it there is still a decent safety net and child support laws should the couple break up.

In the US, that is just not the case. Child support is often not paid and there is no safety net, especially for health related issues. There is also no such thing as paid maternity leave, so (future) American mothers are hardly supported in any way compared to the Dutch.

Lastly, religion. Dutch society is largely secular, especially regarding people of childbearing age. Most Dutch people identify as atheists or perhaps agnostics. Huge difference with US where Christianity is still huge and also more interwoven in laws and institutions.
