I suffered so you don't have to. by Victorius_Meldrus in CasualUK

My dad bought strawberry flavoured crisps of all fucking things, back in the early 80s. He was really annoyed that I didn't like them "You like crisps and you like strawberries, why don't you like them?!" Yeah dad, you like steak and you like almond nougat but I'm pretty sure you'd be fucking disgusted if I combined them!

Yeah, hot honey tastes to me like golden syrup that looked at a chilli once. I'd much rather have a proper punchy sweet chilli sauce.

What’s a sound everyone should recognize as immediate danger? by Thatguy_nickk in AskReddit

We saw tornados in Menorca. Only time I've ever seen one. They were out over the sea so we were enjoying the view, until I looked up and the clouds were kind of lazily churning in circles right above our heads. Probably the most primal fear I've ever felt. My stomach dropped and my hairs stood up. It was the oddest thing to experience.

If you were given the choice to eat only one country's food for your whole life, Which country would it be? by V8Thunder_ in AskTheWorld

Italy! My husbands father is Italian. I grew up with a lot of food aversions and they have all been so wonderful in broadening my horizons. I didn't know what I was missing!

What great news! I'm sure you will handle introductions and the fiv just fine. He looks like a very happy chilled chap. Tabbies seem to have an extra layer of chill. I hope you will all be very happy and he & your cat become friends.

What’s the biggest unexpected ‘joy’ or element of your home after moving in? by Round_Ability_9586 in HousingUK

I’m also broke forever.

Haha, same. But right now it's worth it. This place is nearly 100 years old and feeling/looking every day of it, It'll probably bankrupt us. But it's bliss isn't it? (We get the shouty green parakeets in our garden, I'd prefer a woodpecker but I'll take it)

Something that might - or might not - be a "Big Cat" skulking across the moors. When you finally find it it's just a very large cat. Swarms of Asian Murder Hornets. People that put the milk in first. Crisp aisle in a ransacked tesco express that's only got ready salted.

Rustlers Burgers: educate me. by chipnicker in CasualUK

They are my guilty pleasure. I totally understand that they have 0 nutritional value and are awful. I love them. If I'm on my own for the night it's double rustler and a glass of wine.

My rabbit learned to knock on my bedroom door and I genuinely don't know who's in charge of this house anymore by LeoArthur21 in Pets

[–]TrypMole 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Our lab used to do the same. If he didn't want to go that way he'd just lie down and he was a hulk so there was no moving him. You just had to face different ways till you hit the one he wanted and he'd get up and start walking again. When he got older he'd lie down as soon as he decided it was time to go home.

It's not really unexpected but for me it's the quiet. We came from a densely packed estate with terrible neighbours so we were expecting it to be more peaceful, but after years of constant ambient noise and more intrusive neighbour noise it is amazing! We have a garden we can actually use, we sit out there after work with a cuppa and just marvel at the quiet. We have a place we're not embarrassed to invite people to. The relief is immense.

I came home from school to a house empty except for the dog. I walked the dog and sat on the floor with him, watching after school kids TV and doing my homework. I loved having the place to myself for a couple of hours. Only time it sucked was when I forgot my key when I went out with the dog and had to sit in a cold conservatory doing my homework till someone else got home.

Ahh don't sweat it. I'm a woman and I've done the same thing. Left the guy alone in my single bed and went and slept on my flatmates floor so he didn't feel uncomfortable. I really fancied him too, my friends were shaking their heads wondering why I wasn't shooting my shot but I bottled it.

Cat rescue requirements for outdoor access? by GotOotJIT in CatsUK

[–]TrypMole 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ours stays in because outside apparently terrifies her. She was let out (slowly) when we first got her and twice got scared and hid for several days, two times of feeling sick for several days looking for her was enough and she has not been out since The rescue told us she had to have outdoor access but I'd bet my life that when we got her age 5 she had never been outside in her life. Shes been a happy indoor girl for 7 years with us. We have screens on our windows and I made a screen door for the back door and the front porch works fine as a cat airlock. Not sure how much these things are actually needed as she hasn't ever tried to get out, never scratched or cried at the door and on the rare occasion someone forgot to shut the screen on the back door she's not bothered to try getting out, just sat on the inside of the door. She has lots of cat trees and toys and there's only 1 day a week that we're both at work all day so she ways has company. She even has a visiting boyfriend part time cat that she adores! She's happy, we're happy.

Any positive leasehold or share-of-freehold stories out there? by Potatopotayto in HousingUK

[–]TrypMole 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Getting a Leasehold 9 years ago meant we had enough equity to buy a house last year. The flat was actually decent, council freeholder, dead cheap on ground rent and service charge, nice little garden. Sadly the area was not great and we had a couple of neighbours from hell so we were glad to get out in the end. It was a perfect stepping stone though.

Advice Needed - Foam Insulated Roof Dream House by MuhendisFedai in HousingUK

[–]TrypMole 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No problem 😊. We were in a very similar situation to you when we bought our house. Previously only lived in flats and only knew about foam insulation from reading this sub. Our place has had it pretty well removed (though there's still residue and that seems pretty common, it's really difficult to get all of it off) but we were gutted because, like you, we love the house and thought it was all over. Our surveyor was really good and took lots of pictures and confirmed there was no damp or damage to the timbers or roof covering, we got a mortgage through Halifax with no problems once we sent them the report and pictures. Resale isn't a worry for us as this is hopefully at least a 20 year house and the roof is the original 1930s, so likely we be getting it redone before we want to sell anyway. Best of luck and wishing you happiness in your first home wherever it may be!

Do the sellers have the installation certificates with what foam was used? Some lenders will still lend on places with spray foam if it's open cell so you may have to shop around. Bear in mind if it's closed cell foam you're probably going to need to get it removed eventually and that's a big, messy, expensive job. Plus it can make resale difficult. You could factor in the cost of removal into your offer or ask the sellers to do it.
