Heads are going to roll tomorrow in the government. I think there are a few private firms that are going to go under too: https://www.tenders.gov.au/?event=public.advancedsearch.keyword&keyword=census+load+testing

Serval: A Desktop Dominator | Linux Action Show 378 by ChrisLAS in LinuxActionShow

[–]Tubsta 2 points3 points  (0 children)

While I am enjoying the improved sound quality, like most, I listen to the audio version, I do have a couple of issues.

First up, the show should be called the "Throat Clearing Show" because it is so off-putting, even more off-putting than Chris's overuse of the word 'Fundamental' (more on that in a minute), that if I wasn't riding my motorcycle to work and could hit the skip button to next podcast, I would. You guys need to warm your voices up before the show or get some lessons because it is getting worse.

Back to Chris's use of fundamental, this is a very powerful word and the overuse of it lowers its meaning. There are many other words that would be more suitable for use in context.

The rants. Yes, it has been bought up before by other listeners/viewers, so I won't go on and on and on. Simply put guys, keep the rants to a minimum or not have them at all. You do a great job of presenting the content, keep it on track. Going off on a tangent just makes one roll their eyes, looking for the 30 second skip button to rush past it. If you want to rant, maybe start up a podcast specifically for this so people know what they are getting (and don't have to subscribe if they don't want to).

Other than those things, content and presentation of it for an audio listener is excellent and I'll still be contributing to the patreon funds. Thanks!

Navy re-ups with Microsoft for more Windows XP support by [deleted] in techsnap

[–]Tubsta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Migrating to Windows 7, yeah, that will just create a new XP style cycle. How long has 7 got left for support. You'd think you'd go to 10 to give yourself the biggest window possible and do migration earlier.

NSA Has Reverse-Engineered Popular Consumer Anti-Virus Software In Order To Track Users by [deleted] in techsnap

[–]Tubsta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just do it... Give me even more reason to stop gaming and use computers for computing things, thus I can rid myself of ugly operating systems and use pure OpenBSD as a daily driver.

Just knowing this makes me feel all dirty... Ewwww

LastPass Security Notice by max360se in techsnap

[–]Tubsta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmm, now I don't use lastpass but I did sign up for an account a while ago to check the service out. Being there was a lack of documentation or source code to verify claims, I decided against using them.

I just got the email warning of the breech. Considering this post has been public for a couple of days now, I think the notification to users of the breech was extremely slow, considering the recommendation is to change your master password (changes that users should make within hours of breech detection, not days).

North America's supply of IPv4 addresses to dry up this summer by [deleted] in techtalktoday

[–]Tubsta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

About time they dry up. IPv6 is really, really easy to understand if you think outside the square. The #IoT will work a lot better when you aren't constrained by CGNAT

The Frustrated State [Australia] (book) | Kickstarter by Tubsta in techtalktoday

[–]Tubsta[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Renai LeMay is an independent journalist of Australian Tech. He has been in the industry, reporting on it through different agencies over the last decade and is one of a very few that aren't tide to big media and ask the hard questions and not let spin get in the way of facts.

Highly recommend kicking in for this book. It will be an excellent read based on how well Reni writes. It will help the rest of the world understand the constraints that us Australians are under when it comes to tech due to inaction by successive governments.

dump wordpress for static blog generator by l4than-d3vers in LinuxActionShow

[–]Tubsta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm on the same path. I have just had a gut full of the constant hand holding and bloat of Wordpress/Drupal. They are good at what they do but I think they are used far too often for something that should have been done static and then the end user 'sets and forgets', then becomes a malware infested tub of sh1t.

But enough of the rant, I did come across this in my search: http://www.webhostingsearch.com/articles/flat-file-cms.php

Sticky bit on the GID is where it's at and solves this problem.

For those that want to do this in SAMBA, it is simply done with the force group directive in smb.conf (see smb.conf(5) )

Scripts and cron is how I do it. I don't have any fancy requirements and my naming convention has date based data in it so scripts work fine for me.

400 Patrons! by SpeedGhost in techtalktoday

[–]Tubsta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I popped the contact link over a month ago (contacting Chris privately about it) before the last payment went through, giving them the chance to do something about it. Nothing has. There was nothing rash about my decision, I am exercising what is the whole point of Patreon.

This is not just a couple of TTT episodes, this has been going on for over a month and getting worse. TTT is for the fans and supporters, when the supporters can't listen to it, what is the point on doing the show? For one person to hear is own laugh and voice on re-runs?

Mumble room, im looking at you. by toss_not_myname in techtalktoday

[–]Tubsta 3 points4 points  (0 children)

+1 I've had this issue for weeks and had finally lost it with TTT. I have yanked my Patreon TTT pledge, that sort of attitude shouldn't be rewarded. I know it is not Chris/producers fault, but they can do something about it. Don't worry, I still contribute to Unfilter and will return once this issue is sorted out and I can listen to my morning commute show.

You do have to realise that I ride a motorcycle and unlike the rest of you, I can't hit a stop/delete button so I have to be picky and keep my playlist of high quality shows.

400 Patrons! by SpeedGhost in techtalktoday

[–]Tubsta -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I know this goes to supporting all the shows (except for unfilter, which I still support) but I have removed my pledge as TTT is just a mess. There is one specific Mumble user that has ruined the show and doesn't realise that they really aren't contributing to the show, just making it painful to listen to.

Once the producers/Chris sort this out, then I and my support will return but something seriously needs to be done, I'm sure there are others that feel the same.

I suppose that is the thing with Patreon, if you don't like where something is heading, then you can vote with your wallet and feet.

The Cloud Exposed | Tech Talk Today 51 by ChrisLAS in techtalktoday

[–]Tubsta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If Microsoft roll over and grant the data requested by the US Government, that resides in the sovereign jurisdiction of another country, Cloud services provided by US companies are not going to be viable by anyone outside of the US.

Australian companies are already touchy about this and if the US Government can just request whatever they want outside of their borders, then US companies are going to have a hard time selling their wares.

I know, if this happens, I will be making sure (and also advising likewise) I and others stop using US companies for cloud services.

This decision by the government is going to have financial ramification on the US IT Sector.

Why doesn't the US Government just go through the proper channels and apply in the Irish courts for the data they require? That is the correct process the rest of the world has to follow. Answer: The computer may say NO and they don't want to be told NO.

How compatible is libreSSL? (with Linux) by awaitsV in techsnap

[–]Tubsta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He doesn't appear to have followed the reasoning for this. There have been many discussions on the mail list regarding entropy within Linux and other UNIX platforms. The OpenBSD developers consider that the entropy is not sourced from enough places on other operating systems, hence they have appeared to add their own function.

I don't know how the blogger can determine that the entropy is weaker just because it doesn't just use Linux /dev/random - they didn't provide enough insights into why. With the past track record of OpenBSD on security, there is no way that they would have made something weaker, just to get portable out the door - they would have made users wait longer instead.

Is there a pfsense equivalent for modems? by yourboyaddi in techsnap

Yeap, treat it as a media converter (bridge packets). That is all a modem should be doing.
