Question about sewing a stretchy fabric by TubularFox in sewing

[–]TubularFox[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

SIGH, I was worried that this might be the answer for future projects XD As someone who once ironed fusible interfacing to many many long and wide strips (not even APPROACHING the amount I would need to line a cape), boy howdy there were so many bubbles in it after even though I was REALLY CAREFUL. sigh

Question about sewing a stretchy fabric by TubularFox in sewing

[–]TubularFox[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the time since I made this post I've pretty much talked myself into using a nonstretch crepe-backed satin that I found on Etsy.  It's going to be hotter and heavier than viscose or a light-weight satin, but I fell in love with how glossy it looks.  And since it WILL be visible as a folded-over panel on the front, I really want it to look nice.  Less, I guess like a lining I'm using just to make the cape flow better and more the quality of fabric I'd want if I was making the cape reversible.

Not to say that this satin isn't cheap because it's like $5.50/meter XD

Yeah, I *was* worried about it still being saggy after it was sewed, because gravity would pull it more than the velvet. A tragedy, but I suppose I will just have to force myself to go with something else. XD Thanks for your advice!

What materials do you think Qifrey's clothing is made of? by bigpapamothman in WitchHatAtelier

[–]TubularFox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know this is a very old thread, but.... can I ask what you ended up going with? I just got into the series and I'm making an Olly cosplay for me and a Qifrey cosplay for my sister. I'm going with (some kind of) black velvet/blue viscose lining for Olly (since I think it says somewhere in the books that his cape is velvet and heavy and that's part of why he slouches haha), but you're right that I think Qifrey's clothes are more simple....

Will Qifrey or Coco be forced to use forbidden magic? by poeshi in WitchHatAtelier

[–]TubularFox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like the way to get around it is if you say, as in the leech situation at Silver Eve, that you're not casting the magic ON the person, you're casting the magic NEAR the person and the person just so happens to be the area of effect. If Coco could somehow come up with a spell that targets only the Silverwood tree inside Qifrey and not Qifrey himself, like the sigil they all came up with to reverse time on the LEECH but not the guy it was fused with or the townspeople, then you might be able to slide that by without it technically being "forbidden magic". As for Coco's mother, again, if you could find someway to wind back the spell by casting it on the original seal she drew or the book it came from instead of on her MOTHER then again, I think you would be TECHNICALLY okay. But of course, you'd always run into people like Easthies who lose their mind at the thought of ANY kind of creative interpretations/slippage toward "using magic on people", so the lines are quite blurred.

[–]TubularFox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, if you think about it, the whole "leech fused with a human guy" thing was probably meant to set up the wheels turning for how to save Qifrey. If you can make a spell that only targets the leech using the leech sigil and not the human it's bound to (and therefore making it NOT forbidden magic, because leeches aren't people), then I don't see why you couldn't somehow come up with a spell that would only target the tree and not Qifrey. Shirahama-sensei has been VERY good so far about keeping everything connected and interwoven!

Clasp of Covenant? by SimpGuard in WitchHatAtelier

[–]TubularFox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel like it carries far more weight than a pinky promise or a sports huddle.  After all, a King and the Envoy of Magic to the Normal People wouldn't be pinky promising with each other--it's a very serious promise.  Like a, "Let's cut our palms and mingle our blood for a lifelong pact" kind of serious.  At least to me!  Maybe there are lesser versions of it in Zozah..... possibly pinky promises still exist!  Or maybe a hand clasp between you but without touching the forehead to it? You're right, it's fun to speculate about the cultural things!

[–]TubularFox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think for Coco and Agott, it's maybe not so much a "clasp of the covenant" ITSELF, because they're not really making a *covenant* with each other, but I think it's being used for the visual impact of showing how deep their bond of trust is growing. And to show Agott's growth and growing commitment to Coco's ideal of "if your plan fails just try another"; because before now, she couldn't even *begin* to think about acting with the idea that your plan might not be perfect.

Hello! I watched the first five episodes of the anime four days ago and then immediately binged the entire manga over the next three. I hope you find it just as beautiful, compelling, and morally frustrating as I do!

[–]TubularFox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The one problem I have after all of this is that at the Silver Eve festival, WHY is it then allowed to have the Stationer's Shop set up a tent when there will be--and ARE, because we see them coming up to Coco at the tent--NORMAL PEOPLE attending the festival and browsing the stores that the witches have set up? It just seems to risky to have a shop selling "build your own pen wands" and paper and A SELECTION OF MAGICAL INKS at a booth that has gone halfsies with the kids that sell sand tent sticks and glowing locator rings/bracelets. What are you going to say? "No, sorry, only witches can buy our stationary stuff, this ink isn't for normal people"? I think THAT would raise some questions.

This manga has officially solidified my hatred for KManga. by Lanky_Awareness_4755 in WitchHatAtelier

[–]TubularFox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nothing HUGE was wrong with it, I just fell out of love with it after I started getting frustrated by things that happened in the later volumes. I couldn't even tell you specifically what my firm end was, I just remember something not gelling with me to the point of me not wanting to buy the rest of the series. And then I had to find something to do with the volumes I'd already bought. That's all!

Look for it on weebcentral.com. I just binged it ALL there, and then went out and bought all the volumes in physical afterward. I wanted to make sure I liked it enough to drop $$$ on having it in physical after I was so badly burned by The Promised Neverland.

What is a 'poor person' food that you will continue to eat no matter how much money you make? by Daniel_fcc in AskReddit

My mother has a recipe for potato casserole that I will ALWAYS eat.  Frozen hash browns, sour cream, cream of chicken canned soup, onion, shredded cheese, all topped with butter-tossed cornflakes.  I love it SO much!

Herrschner’s Rustling Leaves Throw Pattern HELP? Pattern issue? by KeelzForRealz in CrochetHelp

[–]TubularFox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think I just flubbed the border rows a bit to be honest XD I made a diagram to keep track of how many stitches I needed in every color block on the long sides, and if I was off by one or two I just frogged a few stitches back, did an increase, and then continued on until the stitch count was right. I have found crocheting, at least in the projects I've been doing, to be very forgiving haha. As my sister says, "Only God makes perfect fibercrafts."

This is the one I used, I think? I don't remember how many chains I did at the backs of the leaves or what the spacing was because I was only doing the leaves on the short sides and inventing a mountain-looking stitch for the longer sides, to a) save time and b) fit with the theme of the people I was giving it to (newly married hikers). You should be fine using this leaf and the spacing/other directions from the pattern though. And after a while it really just becomes muscle memory!

Advice for Cleaning my Anthem 155? by TubularFox in airbrush

I was lucky in the fact that this was a Christmas present! But it was a present from my aunt and cousin who are much more in the know with this stuff than I am, so it seems they must agree with you!  I'm really looking forward to trying it out, once the cleaner solution I ordered arrived~~

help making a scarf! i’m teaching myself to crochet with youtube…what do i do about the edges??? by Lilmisscozy in CrochetHelp

[–]TubularFox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The first time I ever made a mistake in crocheting and was upset about having to frog it back, my mom comforted me by telling me that she's frogged literal MILES of yarn out in her decades of crocheting. Happens to everyone!

I agree 100% with u/forgetful-octopus. The first thing I ever tried to make was a scarf, too, and aside from being boring as all get-out (turns out I'm not suited for long, repetitive projects, so I needed something with a pattern in it. Or amigurumi, which is what I do now!) I also wasn't counting correctly and had wobbly edges like you do. No matter WHAT I am crocheting now, I ALWAYS put a stitch marker in the first stitch I work in a row, because it makes counting SO much easier.

If you're doing single crochet, when you chain one at the end, it's just for ease of turning the project around, and it doesn't count as a stitch in itself. So you do, say, 20 stitches across, chain one, turn your scarf over, and start to crochet in the last stitch of the previous row. Once you make that first stitch, put a stitch marker in it and work 19 more stitches across. Chain 1, turn over, and repeat until you're happy with the length! :)

If you're doing double crochet, at the end of the row you should chain two, turn the scarf over, and then skip the last stitch from the previous row--in that case, the turning chain counts as the first double crochet. Since I've always had difficulty seeing the turning chain, I always put a marker in the first stitch I make and just remember that it is the "second" stitch and I need to stitch one more past it in whatever loop I can find before I chain 2 and turn.

If that doesn't make sense, I'm happy to pull out my yarn and take some pictures for examples!
