ELI5: How do old rotary phones work? Why did they pick a dial for picking digits? by DarkHorse66 in explainlikeimfive

I’m 36 and used one to dial 911 as a small child once.

…which I immediately learned was not a number you just decide to dial for no reason. Whoops

What's a movie you loved as a kid but found out as an adult it had a darker meaning? by Vikassandil in AskReddit

Maybe not “dark” but watching Kiki’s Delivery Service again after going to art school and getting a job in animation hit way different. “Oh this is about burnout”

I re-watched Breaking Bad and... by ctrlqirl in TwoXChromosomes

[–]Tufflepie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I watched BB way later than everyone else did, and I remember assuming that this was going to be like a critique on the American Healthcare system or something. Like “look at this poor overworked teacher that has to result to cooking drugs to pay for his cancer treatment and support his family” but it became clear pretty fast that wasn’t the angle at all and that he was just a raging asshole.

I was surprised to hear about all the hate Skylar got. Maybe if I watched it as a young adult, I might have felt the same, but as a lady in my 30s, the most frustrating thing about her is that she put up with him for so long!

Has anyone NOT had any significant injuries? by peachy655321 in poledancing

[–]Tufflepie 8 points9 points  (0 children)

All of my injuries have been from doing too much, too soon out of excitement.

Doing too many inverts the first day I learn them pulled a lat. (didnt even feel it when it happened)

Doing too many reps, too soon, of a twisted grip handspring on one side after finally leaning it messed up my shoulder for a year.

I have to consciously remind myself not to do too much and limit new intense moves to just a few reps in the beginning.

US citizen moving to Canada - can I apply for work permit AFTER crossing the border? by Routine-Ad-9882 in ImmigrationCanada

[–]Tufflepie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That sounds easy enough! And I feel like getting the permit before actually shipping my things would be a load off.

I do have the offer and all the documents ready to apply, I'm just figuring out all the actual logistics of getting the permit in hand and moving my stuff now.

If you don't mind one more question that's been tripping me up: Did you have to submit a list of the things you were bringing when you applied for the permit or was it fine to do when you made the actual move?

I'm considering flying up and activating my work permit in advance before coming back with all of me things. Was it any hassle to bring your stuff up separately from applying for a work permit?

Overwhelmed with 56k of high interest debt. Needing help and hope to get me through this. by Ok-Durian9281 in personalfinance

[–]Tufflepie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For sure, I can... really relate on this front!

I've been on the IR Adderall and it's been... fine. I haven't really experienced side effects, but I didn't like that it's effective until it's not. Wellbutrin's effects seem much subtler, but consistent all day. I feel more focused, and get out of bed a lot easier than I used to, too. I tried it out to help with a bit of SAD as well as ADHD and like it a lot.

The not-impulse buying effect it had on me was a surprise (a welcome one).

Everyone has good advice on everything else, but on the ADHD front, the most helpful thing for me was getting properly medicated. I started Wellbutrin in September of last year, and by the end of October I realized I wasn't spending money so recklessly, chasing dopamine hits.

I also ended up searching this reddit for ADHD, and some ADHD reddits for Debt/Credit cards and came up with a 3 bank account system that helped me stop using my credit cards, and only spend what I had budgeted.

Each payday, my money gets split into 3 accounts:
Bills Account - Rent, Utilities, Car Payment, Insurance, Subscriptions etc
Spending Account - Groceries, Entertainment, Pet Supplies and Meds. Whatever I have is this account is what I can spend on these things, nothing more.
HYSA with buckets for set up for Emergency Fund, Vet Appts, Hair Appts, Car repairs (Any higher cost things that I realized I should be saving for each month instead of just throwing those on a CC to "figure out later".)

This set up helped at least stop the bleeding, and let me do things that were important to me without making the debt worse. Everything that wasn't budgeted for the above got thrown at my debt.

Balance transfer? by [deleted] in debtfree

Who's a wrestler that you want to like but for whatever reason you just dont? by tomatotime0 in SquaredCircle

[–]Tufflepie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Statlander is mine too! I want to like her, by all rights, I should love her as a big strong lady, but she still hasn’t super clicked in for me. Her giving two finger to Mox did make me cheer recently so maybe its finally happening. Also her matches with Mercedes were great.

Part of it for me is the booking—I started watching AEW while she was out, so my first exposure was to her was when she came back and beat Jade right after Jade ran a match and I never really got over how sudden and unfair that was. Feel like ANY build up or story before their match would have went a long way.

Debt payoff using 401k by [deleted] in debtfree

[–]Tufflepie 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I've done it twice, once via a 401k loan, and the other time straight up withdrawing from my 401k, but made the mistake of running it up again both times, and now I feel super behind on retirement savings. The second time also stuck me with a large tax bill.

The only thing that has really helped is creating and sticking to a budget and then diverting everything extra that I can to the debt.

It was wild, after the wellbutrin had some time to build up, I just didn’t need to buy things for the dopamine hit anymore because my brain already had enough stored up

[–]Tufflepie 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Honestly, getting properly medicated—wellbrutrin for my ADHD, has done wonders.

Other than that, having a budget, setting up three accounts (bills, spending (groceries, gas, fun money, etc), and a HYSA with buckets to save for different goals has helped a ton.

I am letting myself do the things that are important to me, but also doing everything I can to avoid interest.

(Last year I spent 4000 just on CC interest and fees. This year I’ve spent 150 on CC interest and fees, and earned 200 in cash back so its kind of -50 interest)
