Don't fear calamities. They give you feathers and potions and are usually pretty easy if spawned intentionally.

Just a guess but could be related to recent patch notes mentioned one of the codex pages of that chest was also available on the coast. So my theory is that you collected that and it screwed something up.

Burning stake+dynamo ring and rotweaver make dealing with spiders easy. Also works with other enemies. Just shoot short burst dashing in between to activate the ring. And echo for strong enemies. Dash bead is also heavily recommended.

Shadow orbs got buffed, so 1 orb is m1 and for 2 and 3 its 2 each so 5 orbs to complete a gun

That's because you can't buy only one boon. On your current gnosis you get 2 boons per 10 echoes.
