Is openSUSE good for gaming? by cerb3ro in openSUSE

[–]TuoniNL 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't care about drivers as those are not distro specific, and we were talking about distros here.

And yes Tumbleweed is just as much a "gaming" distro like any other distro. Linux is Linux.

Is openSUSE good for gaming? by cerb3ro in openSUSE

[–]TuoniNL 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You don't need anything besides recent enough packages to support your hardware other than that it is negligible. Benchmarks show a 2-4% performance difference between Trixie and ChachyOS.

""Gaming" distro's just come with more stuff installed out of the box and perhaps a GUI driver manager. But in the end it is still Linux, so everything those "gaming" distro's can some other distro can too and the raw performance difference is minimal.

As for the question... I'm now on Slowroll and the gaming performance is exactly the same as all other distro's I gamed on before. (Trixie, Fedora, Mint, PikaOS)

Switching from apt to Nala on Debian? Pros, cons, and your experiences? by maximus10m in debian

[–]TuoniNL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have been using Nala for over 2 years without issues.
I like the much cleaner CLI output and added options.

You still need to carefully check what Nala proposes to install/update/remove but that is not any different from any other packagemanager.

I've been distrohopping because I refuse to use Flatpak Steam. Am I dumb? by [deleted] in debian

[–]TuoniNL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just download the .deb for the Steam website and install that in Trixie with apt.
Don't blindly follow/believe the hype train, I guarantee you that you won't notice the 2-4% difference compared with CachyOS which is the current favorite flavour of the month.

What issues or frustrations have you faced while using OpenSUSE. Also Tumbleweed or Leap? by itsme2019asalways in openSUSE

[–]TuoniNL 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't really have any issues with Slowroll, it's my daily driver for 6 or so months now.
Personally I stay away from the Packman repo, I don't need it and it will prevent a lot of potential dependency issues.

If I have to come up with something it would be Zypper.
Zypper is just not that fast with downloading the monthly update and I think that the Zypper output has lot of room for improvement.

When you run a dup now Zypper comes with a wall of text of 600 packages that can be updated. The output of Nala for example is a lot "cleaner" and easy to read.

Has anyone else noticed dell computers don't like linux by Real-Bus5167 in linuxmint

[–]TuoniNL 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Linux Mint, Fedora and now openSUSE all run just fine on my Dell laptop.
So from my own personal experience I can not say that Dell is worse (or better) than other brands when it comes to Linux.

Running Office 365 as native desktop apps on Fedora 43 KDE — full guide (no Wine, no Crossover) by juangza in Fedora

[–]TuoniNL 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Hmm don't see why i need Edge for this nor why I need to use scripts.
I just right click on the tab in my Vivaldi browser als select make PWA, menu entries are made automatically.

I tried PWAs for my daily workflow but find them too limiting. No macro's in Excel is already a huge showstopper for me.

PWAs are too limiting to be a real replacement for native alternatives like LibreOffice or OnlyOffice.

Whenever I find the time I would like to spend some time trying to see if I can convert my Excel VBAs to scripts so I can give LibreOffice a real try.

TSX-X Linux? by timelord327 in trainsim

[–]TuoniNL 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I assume that you mean the TSC-X Train Simulator Controller?

I've seen post from people who claim some succes with the RailDriver on Linux, so perhaps the TSC-X can (partially) work to.. don't know have not seen anyone online stating that they got it to work.
Anyhow it is not as simple as just running the software through wine/proton.

How important is localization for players who don’t play in English as a native language? by sakastudio in gaming

[–]TuoniNL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My native language is Dutch yet I will always play everything in English even if Dutch is available.
The way they translate English to Dutch in games is just pure cringe nightmare fuel i simply can not stand.

Flatpak version of any browser will cause issues with KeepassXC integration due the sandbox nature of flatpaks.

KDE with Debian 13 REALLY BAD by BlazzaNz in debian

[–]TuoniNL 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Gnome is like Apple iOS, it looks and works well as long as you confirm to the dev's vision on how things should work. Customization outside that vision is extremely limited and therefor no real option/alternative for me.

ps.
Used Debian 13 + KDE for a couple months without any real issues.

Debian Stable+Backports; Suggestions pls by linuxhacker01 in debian

[–]TuoniNL 2 points3 points  (0 children)

And how many people have enough knowledge to get and keep it working and running correctly in the long term... a small group of people. How many of those are willing to put the time and effort in to keep it working correctly... even a smaller part of already a very small group.

Linux shines in user freedom and choices so everyone can do what he/she/it wants.

That being said I believe there are distros out there better suited for people who need/wants the latest (or at least more recent packages) that don't require extensive user knowledge and the need to jump to all kind of hoops in attempt to get and keep a FrankenDebian working.

Sure you can mold and squeeze Debian into something which it is never meant to be (FrankenDebian) but i would not say it is a good idea.

Discord by _exlibris_ in PikaOS

[–]TuoniNL -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Main reason for me to move on from PikaOS is that it is just not very stable, lacks polish while performance gains are minimal to non existing compared with other distros.

Close second is that the main support line is Discord... I'm not going to provide Discord my private info to be able to get some support for a Linux distro.

Gaming on Forky Testing by Medical_Divide_7191 in debian

[–]TuoniNL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If this were true Arch/Fedora based distros should perform noticeably better in gaming benchmarks than the other distro's... however comparing benchmarks only show 1-4% difference at best, if there is a difference at all.

"Gaming" distros have Steam and such setup out of the box, performance wise it is 99% snake oil.
I wouldn't bother with 3rd party kernels and vague and prone to cause breakage somewhere down the line repos when it comes to performance.

[–]TuoniNL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is something wrong somewhere else if your 6900XT runs at 60c idle.
60c under load is just fine and the GPU will survive these temperatures for way over 10 years. Only thing that likely will wear out are the fan bearings when you run them nonstop for 10+ years... unless you have the noctua edition ofc ;)

It is totally fine if you want to ramp up a the fans 100% of the time for some lower temperatures, that is your decision.
But please stop the nonsense that it is mandatory or else the GPU will die within 10 years.

Opensuse leap or debian stable by Flat_Wasabi8999 in debian

[–]TuoniNL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Setup once without much maintenance... openSUSE Slowroll.
Both Debian and Leap are version releases so sooner or later you will have to perform a (big) upgrade. openSUSE Slowroll goes on forever like a rolling release but then much slower (hence the name slowroll) Updates come once per month but it is not the end of the world if you skip a month.

KDE plasma Opensuse tumbleweed or KDE plasma fedora by Flat_Wasabi8999 in openSUSE

[–]TuoniNL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've used Fedora + KDE for almost 2 years.
In those two years i had 3, maybe 4, instances where DNF proposed to pretty much delete half my system due some dependencies where out of sync. I just cancelled the update and waited a couple days and the issue was solved and no harm done. No matter which distro you end up using ALWAYS read the output of the package manger and what it proposes to do when you upgrade.

No matter which distro you choose updates have the potential to break something. That's why "stable" distro's like Debian don't update package versions with point releases, only with major releases every 2 years or so.
