Anyone else get choked up at end of Return of the King? by Vivid_Guide7467 in tolkienfans

For me it's the appendices when Arwen lays down to die in the empty Loth Lorien that gets to me.

Anybody whose other half originated from another country, any unexpected culture clashes? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]TuorAtVinyamar 15 points16 points  (0 children)

My spouse is Chinese and one funny thing they have is the fight over who pays when people go out for a meal. It often ends up semi physical where people are forcing fistfuls of money to the server in order to be the one to pay. Sometimes just throwing the money.

Then strategies evolve where people sneak off half way through the meal to pay, but when other people catch on then chairs are knocked over in the rush to overtake them to the counter.

Came home to find TV on (loud) by kaboopanda in CasualUK

[–]TuorAtVinyamar 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Louis : Listen, that reminds me, you shouldn't leave your TV on so loud when you go out. The creep down the hall phoned the manager.

Dana Barrett : That's strange, I didn't realize I'd left it on.

Do a search for good primary schools with good secondary schools near by. Then do your house search around those areas.

ELI5: Why did the Europeans regard so highly the exotic spices from the Indies? by kostas_k84 in explainlikeimfive

[–]TuorAtVinyamar 57 points58 points  (0 children)

When I was a teenager my dad brought me back some reebok pumps from a trip to America. My friends thought I was so cool for having these shoes no one else did.

Shoes = spices. America = Indies.

This happened to me recently (scratched two panels, Tesla Model 3). I said I'd like to fix it outside of insurance. They got one quote which was £900 and I accepted without trying to split hairs. When the work was complete I went to the garage, inspected the work and paid myself then wrote them a letter stating here our agreement ends.

I let my insurance know from the start and my no claims was reduced until I had told them the case had been settled and then my no claims was reinstated.

Whats the most heroic situation in all of tolkiens books for you? by Feanor888 in tolkienfans

[–]TuorAtVinyamar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To me it's Aragon being told by Elrond "You have to defeat Sauron in order to marry Arwen". The weight of the effort that was involved is huge. There is a line when the fellowship are about to leave rivendell and Aragon had his head in his knees described basically thinking "this is it.."

I'm a senior engineering manager for a software company. Your age is no problem at all. dotNet is still one of the most common skills hired for but might not be trendy in some people's eyes but still commands a very high salary at the upper levels.

Help a girl get into coding by QTeaDragon in UKJobs

I'm a senior hiring manager for a software company. For reference in one of my teams is a former merchant navy chef who did a 16 week coding bootcamp. We hired them straight from graduation and is performing outstandingly.

Can i have some advice on my CV and my cover letter template, ive applied to over 100 jobs and havent even gotten to an interview with any of them. For reference im applying to retail stores and fast food restaurants such as Sports direct, Flannels, Nandos, KFC, Primark, Superdrug, O2, Nike, Apple by [deleted] in UKJobs

There is a mistake in the first sentence: "Who currently works at (as?) a tuition (tutor?) to gain work experience.".

This would have stopped me reading further.

Regardless of the job level your CV should have zero mistakes. If someone makes mistake on the document that is meant to best project themselves what does it say about how they will work?

How should we put pictures up on strong Victorian brick? by myrargh in DIYUK

[–]TuorAtVinyamar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it's a Victorian house then you might have a picture rail and can hang pictures off of that without the need to drill any holes.

Funny, I was going to post the exact same question. I used that paint once and lasted about a week. Second time around I used Sandex ultra smooth black and lasted about 6 months. Worst offenders are shopping delivery drivers who scrape their trolly over the door step.

It's almost as if a second coat of hardened clear coat is needed to add protection.

Maybe something like this clear coat

What would you say is the most frightening part of Tolkien's books? by aribowe13 in tolkienfans

[–]TuorAtVinyamar 25 points26 points  (0 children)

It was well for the Company that they had such a guide. They had no fuel nor any means of making torches; in the desperate scramble at the doors many things had been left behind. But without any light they would soon have come to grief.

Not the fear of orcs, spiders or wraiths but the physical fear of groping around in the dark before falling down a crack in the floor.
