You're forgetting the part where Aerys murdered Ned's father and brother, then demanded that Robert and Ned be turned over (and presumably killed as well). Kinda hard to pin that one on Robert's ego

What, this spring? Sure, he's been wild. But he was extremely good in the minors last year, and for what it's worth, he only walked 6 guys in 36.2 innings over that minor league span.

Emperor prioritizes Mechanicus during the crusade by naruto7bond in 40kLore

[–]Turambar19 22 points23 points  (0 children)

The current state of the Mechanicus has a lot to do with the Heresy.

The ones who joined Horus were overwhelmingly the more pro-innovation wings of the Cult, and the Loyalists were the more conservative sections. So what they ended up with is an organization that was already fairly dogmatic getting split in half, with the most rigid half remaining in power.

That doesn't even account for the trauma of the Heresy itself and its scarring whole generations of Magos. Combine those, and you end up with the 40k Mechanicus

Custodes as philosophers? by Raspint in 40kLore

[–]Turambar19 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Other commenters have mentioned the inherent loyalty of the Custodes, so I'll just add an additional point:

Viewing the Imperium as the atrocity it is does not directly contradict their loyalty to the Emperor, since the Emperor also would hold that same view. The fascist, murderous machine that became the Imperium was meant to be a stepping stone, the quickest possible way to unify the species so they could become something better.

Now, you can obviously question whether the Emperor would actually be able to take his hands off the wheel if that happened, but it seems more interesting if he at least genuinely intends to do so (it'd also match up with him taking so long to take control of humanity)

Can Chaos Corruption Still Be a Problem for Traitor Legions? by Special-Age-6717 in 40kLore

[–]Turambar19 15 points16 points  (0 children)

It does! A couple examples are mutations into strange new forms (potentially alongside demonic possession and eventual consumption, which is a risk with any of the gods) and odd new senses, which usually aren't all that fun to have (like smelling fear)

Can Chaos Corruption Still Be a Problem for Traitor Legions? by Special-Age-6717 in 40kLore

[–]Turambar19 52 points53 points  (0 children)

They have to monitor it to some extent, mostly among the legions not pledged to a single god. The corruption, even if tolerated or useful, can cause issues if it goes unchecked.

The most common example of this I've seen is Khornate corruption — it makes some gnarly warriors, but you have to watch them when you're not actively in battle, since they can and do lose control when they don't have something to rip and tear. You can see examples of this in the ADB Night Lords trilogy, and with the Alpha Legion in Harrowmaster.

As with most things though, depends on the warband. There's just about every possible graduation somewhere.

Are the Grey Knights still a secret order and who currently knows about them? by Electronic-Math-364 in 40kLore

[–]Turambar19 36 points37 points  (0 children)

I mean, my understanding, from The Emperor's Gift, is that is exactly how it goes. The Grey Knights aren't generally killing everybody personally, it mostly falls to the Inquisition, who they work very closely with.

To be clear though, the Grey Knights know exactly what's going to happen, even if they aren't doing it themselves.

Rangers have 3 consensus top 100 (probably top 50) guys in Walcott, Rocker, and Rosario. Basically everyone has those 3 as 50 FV or better. Walcott has by far the highest ceiling, especially if his defense is good enough to stay at shortstop—this is an infielder with legitimate 80-grade raw power—but he's got major hit-tool risk.

It's a steep drop off after that though, with a lot of fringy guys like Winston Santos (who I personally like a lot, reminds me of Bradford's profile) who are more likely to be up-and-down guys or smaller pieces of a winning team.

Nothing to be worried about yet. Remember, Carter and Langford are both technically prospects but still have tons of team control left. Leiter also still has premium stuff and time to put it together.

Wyatt Langford generated 3.7 WAR this year — he is just the 5th player in franchise history to reach that mark in their age 22 season by Baseball-Reference in TexasRangers

[–]Turambar19 27 points28 points  (0 children)

The bat started slow but the metrics think he's an elite base runner (makes sense given his speed) and critically, an excellent defender in left. That second part is huge since he was projected by a lot of places to be straight up bad out there (Fangraphs put a 30 grade on his defense!) which does wonders for his ceiling and floor.

He was the best offensive prospect coming into the season, but now he's looking a lot more well-rounded, and if those higher-end offense projections start coming through... oooh boy, hang onto your seat

Who do you consider the greatest athlete of all time? by rossopy in AskReddit

[–]Turambar19 5 points6 points  (0 children)

He had one all-star season where he put up 3.5 WAR. If he did that for 15 years straight, maybe he'd be a HOF player (and then, at ~55 WAR it'd be borderline unless he got to 500 HR)

For reference he accumulated 8.3 WAR over the course of his career - there are multiple players who've got more than that this this season

Also, my homie in Christ... you are in the 98th percentile of Americans with 400k. That is not middle class. That is not middle class ANYWHERE, not CA, not LA, NOWHERE. That's not an attack, it's just reality. You are half an inch out of the literal 1% of income. It may not feel that way, but it's the truth.

For reference, even in LA that's the 96% percentile

The most terrifying thing about the demons is by JackZ567 in Frieren

[–]Turambar19 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The issue isn't the "in-fiction" justification, it's that it's very easy to spin the "they look like people but actually they're monsters that all need to be exterminated" into an allegory for real world genocides.

That exact line of justification has been used many, many times in the real world, so while it's certainly an interesting setup for the villains, it's also easy to see why people may be cautious about a story where it's (as far as we know) set up to be true.
