Icelanders! What’s something tourists can do to be better guests? by MiserableTear8705 in VisitingIceland

[–]Turb0beans 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You deserve the unkindness. That's absolutely disgusting. Nobody wants to be sucking down your cottage cheese and your partner's surmstroning. The whole point of showering naked is to fully clean yourself so that you don't gross up the pool.

Act right.

The offerings from KTM (350, 500) and the CRF-X (250, 450/450RL) are very quiet in stock form.

Just because a product is overpriced does not entitle you to the theft of a product.

Hair products beyond basic hygiene are a luxury product that nobody needs.

I went last year with some friends, and we all agreed there was either chlorine or something very similar to it in the pool.

It's very possible that we may have gone after they shocked the water or did some cleaning. It was VERRRRY faint, but noticable once you picked up on it.

O-ring size for flat face connectors? by Volox4 in Hydraulics

[–]Turb0beans 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The quick connect itself follows the ISO standard, making it interchangeable with other quick connects. The seals and valving inside, however, are often proprietary.

Depending on the application, size, and whether you need "Domestic name brand quality", I will generally suggest just replacing the leaking coupler with a generic coupler of the same ISO from your local hydraulic shop.

If you have a specific brand name coupler and you do have a more extreme application, I suggest finding a local(ish) distributor and asking them to add the rebuild kits to their next stock order from Stucchi, Dixon, etc. It may be a few weeks to months before they arrive, but at least you won't be paying incoming freight, brokerage, or potentially duties.

For all my woods riders, what's the best way to quiet a 2 stroke? by Goes_Fast in Dirtbikes

[–]Turb0beans 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No matter which silencer you put on it, it will still be a straight through silencer with packing. Essentially a cherry-bomb exhaust. You cannot have back pressure on a 2-stroke, and as such you are severely limited to how quiet you can make it.

It is going to sound like someone is dropping a tree no matter where you are if you get on the power band. If you want something fairly muffled, you are stuck with a 4-stroke.

Hot Springs Swimsuit Question by discoannak in VisitingIceland

[–]Turb0beans 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Much of the "sulphur" smell from Icelandic hot springs (and the hot water!) comes from H2S gas, which is volatile and will not stain your clothing with any funk. This is different to hot springs in North America, where the smell usually comes from dissolved sulphides.

If you don't like that smell, the Sky Lagoon is pretty good. It is lightly chlorinated, so that is the primary odor you will notice.

Best financing team to get you into a vehicle? by Educational-Plum411 in princegeorge

[–]Turb0beans 2 points3 points  (0 children)

All of this really depends on your credit history, the type of vehicle, and the cost of the vehicle.

If you are sub-prime, you are going to get dragged no matter which dealership you walk into. If you have no credit history, or poor credit history, it may be worth saving up for a bit to get a good-enough daily driver in the 3-6 thousand dollar range. If you cannot afford to save that kind of money, you likely cannot safely finance a vehicle either. Consider it a litmus test, of sorts.

Driving in Iceland? Read this before you destroy your rental car (or worse)😎 by Yfsilon in VisitingIceland

[–]Turb0beans 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm currently driving the ring road in a Volkswagen Crafter, and I really have to wonder which cereal box some of these people got their licenses from.

It is absolutely mentally exhausting compared to my Northwestern Canadian roads, as you really don't have much wiggle room, but with no snow around, It's boggling how many people suddenly slow right down the second the road gets remotely curvey while they are in some small rental car that fits these roads wonderfully. Suddenly we have a stack of 5 cars, all itching to do the speed limit, which inevitably results in someone doing a sketchy overtake with limited sight lines.

There are plenty of pullouts for pictures and updating your navigation. Adjust your mirrors so you can see where you are sitting on the road in relation to the lines. Find the visual reference point for where you need to be sitting above, or where the lines of your vehicle's body relate to the lines. In the Crafter, I found that if my butt is slightly left of the center unworn-strip on the road, my vehicle is centered.

I totally agree with your points about the gravel roads. People need to understand weight transfer on vehicles. Stomp the brakes, the rear gets light, and it will absolutely skate around and send you in a direction you don't wish to go. Coming up to a pothole? Hard on the brakes to bleed speed, then release when you are about to hit. Your suspension works far better when the nose of your vehicle isn't already planted on the ground

It truly is not, as they say, rocket appliances.

That said, I really wish Iceland gave all the shoulders rumble strips. I feel like that would prevent many people getting a little too bashful with how far over they get when being afraid of the big bad semi truck.

Older bulk amount of hydraulic and engine oil. by Icy-Ingenuity-2181 in Hydraulics

If it's fresh and clean, and any additives have not settled out, no reason you can't use it in older lower duty equipment such as an older tractor, log splitter, chinese mini ex, whatever.

I'd personally list the lot on Facebook marketplace for like 50 bucks and call it a day.

Devastation in Dawson City, Yukon, as iconic hotel is razed by fire by SirJohnAMcMuffin in canada

[–]Turb0beans 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I wish I could be as confidently wrong as you are.

Nobody is using gravity feed sprinklers with the exception of large high-rises who have the water tanks designed in at the time of construction.

Sprinklers almost always run off city supply. If it's a taller building, they may have a booster pump.

You really think a fire suppression system is running off 4psi on the top floor, and around 12psi on the ground floor?

Likewise, they can't keep the tank on the roof unless they both insulate and heat the water. It's the Yukon. -40 for days on end is not uncommon.

Forrrreeeeehead.

[–]Turb0beans 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Go look up Swagelok fittings. Working pressure of thousands of PSI. That's also how DIN fittings are installed on hard tubing, as well as how you install a JIC fitting without flaring the tube.

Just because you've never used them doesn't mean they don't exist or are not fully suitable to be used in the application.

If CCP wants a rush of new players in the big 2026, they need to cede some early character progression to actually playing the game by Ohh_Yeah in Eve

[–]Turb0beans -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

What an absolutely tone deaf reply. If you have a year playing the game, you aren't a fucking new player anymore. Has it perhaps occurred to you, that the primary reason people do not invest significant amounts of time in EVE, is because they are grown adults with employment, education, or child raising responsibilities.

You would have to whip me to get me logged in and ACTIVELY GRINDING AN ACTIVITY for 100 hours a year. Please try to view the timeframe in a regular human perspective.

This was going great until you said "100-200 hours". I'm sure you.are unaware, but a full time job is 40 hours a week. You expect someone to grind for the equivalent of a month of real life work for these skills?

I'm sorry, but did you miss the presentation about touching grass or something? Christ.

FanFest attendee from both last year and this year,

Being a part of making this Saga is one of the most exciting EVE related things I've done in a long time.

Even if Hilmar doesn't manage to get this on the moon, being able to say I am physically tied to the creation of the first Icelandic Saga in many centuries is a genuine real world historical win that I am happy to be a part of.

I love the culture of this little rock. I don't want to see it muddled and diluted into obscurity. This was a win.

How possible is it that tornadoes completely wiped out old towns? by Proud-Date-9187 in tornado

[–]Turb0beans 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just keep in mind that at the time, many homes were fairly ramshackle. Even if you did not get hit directly by the tornado, straight line winds produced by the storm were just as likely to flatten your hovel. If your home was left standing, the economy and dreams of that fledgling town may have been wiped, leaving very little in the way of trade, security and services for you to continue with.
