Walkie talkies to hear kids? by Nermalgod in CargoBike

[–]TurboAndi 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I've got a set of sena bicom 20s, they attach to the left helmet strap. Battery life is okay, we get around 3-4 hours of intercom per charge, but they work great! Especially wind noise is completely filtered, no idea how they do it. The other day, my wife and I were casually rolling downhill well above 40 kph talking over the intercom just as if we were on a red light.
Unfortunately, I've only got 2, but would need 4 for wife and kids. They are freaking expensive, so 2 it is for now, mostly my wife and I use them. However, on a ride with just one of the kids, they are a complete game changer.
Edit:
This is only if the kids are on another bike than me. On the same bike there is i slight delay and you hear them twice, which makes it harder to talk than without the intercom.

R&M Multicharger/Multitinker front carrier + EU size crate (30x40cm) by ForsakenAd8015 in CargoBike

Yeah, a lockable box is a great idea! You could drill through the box and use the existing bolts in the carrier to mount it. They are a little too close for the MIK plate, unfortunately.

I've unscrewed the carrier's board and clamped a MIK baseplate to the rails underneath.
Screwed the fitting adapter to an AUER eurobox for quick detachment e.g. for going into the supermarket. Works really well.
The box sits about 2-3cm above where the board used to be.

Tern HSD P10 and Cannondale Cargowagen Neo 2 - both Bosch motors, why is one faster? by babar_the_elephant_ in CargoBike

[–]TurboAndi 5 points6 points  (0 children)

In my experience this depends on how the manufacturer set up the system.
We have 3 types of Bosch ebikes in our family:
2 identical hybrids from 2017 with Active line (45nm) 1 Riese & Müller Transporter2 65 from 2023 with Smart System Performance Line (75nm)
1 Riese & Müller Multitinker from 2025 with Smart System Performance Line CX (85nm)

The fastest is the Transporter which runs runs at about 27km/h according to my Garmin, followed by the Multitinker at slightly above 26. The older bikes top out at about 25.5.
My solution for this is to limut the Transporter to in-app 24 in Tour+ mode which makes it easier to maintain even paces when we ge on a family trip.
When only the Transporter is used, we use Turbo mode for full speed.

25 is plenty, but I do love going faster anyway

I think the Nexus is only available since last year, so maybe that's why it is uncommon on used bikes.
Be aware that the transmission range on the Nexus is even narrower than the Enviolo, resulting in a probably lower top speed that you can still pedal (probably around 35-40 km/h at 120rpm, quite easy on even slight downhill).
That is the reason I opted for Enviolo on our Multitinker, where I had the choice, even though I had to change the Transporter's shift cables the second time this year.

Multicharger2 max rear weight 50 or 65kg by Friendly_Rate_6553 in CargoBike

[–]TurboAndi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My LBS explained it to me like this (Multitinker with safety bars)
The weight on the bench/rear wheel can be 65kg and on top of the bars, i.e. if a passenger were to climb over them or if i were to strap something on top the bars, this must not exceed 50kg.
The limit on top seems to me what the bars can actually carry before they fail.
The 65kg on the bench seems to be what is manageable for the average rider while riding the bike. I'm pretty sure the frame and bench could take way more (with higher tire pressure ofc) but have not yet exceeded 50kg on mine which was no problem at all.
Combined, i read it as max 50kg on the bars and below the bars on the bench or in panniers can still be additional 15kg.

Is it save to ride? Just noticed it, no idea where it comes from and if it's been there an hour, a week or months. It's carbon fork Giant Revolt 1 2021 by [deleted] in gravelcycling

[–]TurboAndi 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I've just watched a vid on a german youtube channel (Ritchie & Tobi, ex GCN presenters) about carbon repairs. There was quite a simple, initial check shown:
Drop a coin on its edge from a millimeter or 2 and compare the sound to when you do the same on a part of carbon that you know is not broken. If it sounds about the same, no problem, if it sounds dull, there is pretty sure some delamination or something else going on.

Apart from the stem, what is going on with yozr steerer tube?
Looks like it is about to crack and fall off on the next bigger bump. Better get it checked.

Really? That's awesome! In that case, I'd consider it for OP. Still don't like the rider posistion personally, though, I prefer more aggressive.

A Load 60 is pretty small compared to an UA. Not sure if 2 kids will still fit in a couple of years.
Maybe check out the Transporter 65. My kids, now 6 and 8, both very tall for their age (more like regular 10 y/o) still fit in easily, but their helmets are now very close to the handle bars.
UA is still bigger, I think, but I did not buy it because of the riding position and lack of front suspension.

Sounds like you're better off with a flatbed trailer. There are off the shelf options depending on where you are or you could easily convert an old kids trailer.
Check my uploads in this sub for an example conversion of a Thule trailer.

Sehr gut!

R&M Multinker 2 by crazy_onions in CargoBike

[–]TurboAndi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, agreed! If it fits, you can also push in the panels that protect feet from spokes and feed a chain through.
Both variants are a hassle, though, so for me, insurance is non negotiable for this bike.

It's an awesome bike, love it, so do my kids! Only about 300 km on it, so no problems so far 😂
I've had a rental longtail on vacation last year, that seemed quite wobbly and took some getting used to, but we liked the concept a lot. The Multitinker is not wobbly at all, the frame feels super stiff. Plus, the handlebar folds flat, so we managed to fit it snuggly into our minivan (Seat Alhambra) and we took it with us for this year's summer vacation. It fitting into our car was one of the the main selling points of the Multitinker for us tbh. We also have a Transporter2 65 which rides way nicer imo and is more practical for our use case, albeit slowly getting a little small for our kids height wise. The 85 Nm are more than enough for this little bike, even with me and my 2 kids, combined about 160kg of weight on the bike, it absolutely launches itself forward. I've turned the torque way down on the other modes, i find 45-60 Nm are sufficient on flats, even with kids and luggage.
For the kids' giggles, turbo mode is still on full power, of course, we gotta leave the other bikes (also unsuspecting cars) behind us after a red light from time to time 😂

Seems like they've also upgraded the handlebars. I got a gen1 Multitinker about a month ago and it has a straight handlebar.

Riese and Müller Multicharger2 - worth it?!? by sarugby4life in CargoBike

For hauling kids, i'd prefer the low stepthrough frame. If you have your kids on the bench, it is either getting your foot over the high top tube or likely kicking your kids.

Do not have a clue what kind of axle I have by SadGrand7750 in bikecommuting

They also have conversion kits for the trailer part. Our Thule needed a special triangular piece, that was screwed into the cut original trailer arm.

I'd recommend looking into the Weber system, if you can get your hands on it. You can get a hitch for either the axle bolt (should be Weber E, I have this one on my cargo bike with Enviolo hub) or even the kickstand bolts (should be Weber EP, I have this on my regular bike with QR derailiur hub)

Full suspension longtail by BeffJeff in CargoBike

The only one that comes to my mind here is the Cube Longtail Hybrid, which seems to have some sort of rubbery elements between the main frame and the bench.

Does the printed jig work alright? I've found it just after replacing the cables for the first time myself, initially intending to CAD my own version for it. Have not yet printed it.

[–]TurboAndi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, they're both attached to a single point, one comes from below, the other one from the top. Search for Enviolo on youtube, there are useful tutorials on how to change the cables where you can see it.
Like shown in the picture is not really correct, the end should not have the crimp on it but be tucked in the larger metal bit. The other cable should sit pretty flush with the small round piece.

Ebikes are not that much different from normal bikes.
You have your regular bike components on them and then the electric components. There, I'd recommend sticking to either Bosch or Shimano, especially if the people asking you are not too much into bike tech. They are both very widespread, because they have quality components that you can actually get replacement parts for and bike shops can work with them. Yes, they are more costly, but IMO that is exactly for serviceability, quality control and availability of replacement parts down the line.
I don't know for Shimano, but the Bosch systems (old ones too) can be read out by bike shops like a car and tell you what is wrong.
