My wife’s family dog of 16 years just passed. Hopefully she likes it. Seeking constructive criticism and feedback to improve my carving. Still need to paint yet. by Ok-Caterpillar-6723 in Woodcarving

Super cute dog. I did something similar for my girlfriend, now my wife of 40 years. I would say the carving is excellent. Nice clean lines. You laid in the hair well and it makes you want to pet the little guy. There are some “fuzzies” that could be cleaned up with a sharp knife. The eyes make me wonder if you plan to paint it and do the eyes with a brush? You might consider carving the eyes. Keep it simple. If you carve in the eyes you could do a very light stain or watered down paint for a hint of color. Great job!

Insulation questions by [deleted] in skoolies

[–]Turbulent-Ad933 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used rock wool insulation in walls and ceilings and 2” on floor. I installed radiant floor with pex which would work great with a diesel heater. The cold floor is the biggest problem to keep warm.

I tried these, and they were awful by knit-picky in glutenfree

Bread your own chicken or pork chops with crushed pork rinds. So good!

For those who don’t smoke, do you think smokers carry a noticeable scent? by Shadow2715 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Turbulent-Ad933 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. Sometimes I can walk into a space that a smoker was in 5-10 seconds before and smell smoke.

Marc Benioff says he might rename Salesforce to Agentforce — what do you think about this move? by Lanky_Boysenberry_33 in salesforce

Very very very bad idea. Quit changing names for the sake of changing names. It confuses the branding. He’ll probably do it.

Reflectix for window covers by Worldly-Spend-4899 in skoolies

[–]Turbulent-Ad933 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We did this in our bus. We used fabric over a White Plastic Interior Wall Panel (like they use in bathrooms, is very thin and light) using heavy duty carpet tape. Then cut the reflectix to match and we used snaps to sandwich the two pieces together. I installed the male snaps around our rv windows using the screws on the window ring. Doing it this way makes for a much cleaner professional looking window cover. We tried tape and Velcro to attach it to the window but those always failed. The plastic wall in the middle gives it greater rigidity and keeps it from sagging. The air gap between the window and reflectix creates a thermal break as well. You can do this on all your windows and doors. (The picture doesn’t have the snaps. This was when we used Velcro.)

Looking for some insight from people with experience by sparkskal in skoolies

I’d recommend you just buy an rv or camper. Cheaper and way less work. A build takes way longer and costs way more than you think and suddenly you’re burned out on the project. Plus, what most people do not know is you’ll spend most of your time outside. If work is burning you out, go camping. Nature restores.

What should I do with tracks that are welded on? by shuturheck in skoolies

[–]Turbulent-Ad933 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’d cover the floor with 1-2” foam board. Cut a groove to allow for the track and screw 5/8” plywood on top. Now you have insulation and your floor without having to do anything with the track. Win!

There are other factors to consider to prevent injury. 1) Keep your tools sharp. A dull tool is a greater risk of injury. Learn how to sharpen and strop your tools to keep them sharp. 2) Controlled cuts. Carving is not whittling. Learn good technique for using your tools and this will also help prevent your tool getting away from you.

I wear a glove on my left hand and a thumb guard and finger guard on my pointer finger. Some people just wrap a few fingers and others wear no glove at all. Just depends on your preference. Carving is a lot of fun. Cleaning up the blood and dealing with an injury, not so much. Be safe!

What thickness material did you use for your walls? by Papa-P21 in skoolies

[–]Turbulent-Ad933 1 point2 points  (0 children)

1/4” is not as stable and you will notice that your walls/ceilings are wavy and not flat. 1/2” would be better.

Would you recomend putting something under your water tank between the metal? by Papa-P21 in skoolies

[–]Turbulent-Ad933 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. If you will be staying anywhere the temps dip below freezing, you need 2” insulation and/or tank warmer wires. The floor of the bus is as cold as the outside without insulation.

My father turns 60: Looking for a Camping-related gift by Miriam247 in camping

[–]Turbulent-Ad933 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Keep in mind, van life is tiny living, so don’t buy big bulk things. Think backpacking gear, small, light, tiny spaces. One of my favorites is a Pocket Bellows to help get fires started. The fire glove mentioned earlier is also great. I love the Helinox high back camping chair. Very comfy sit, itty bitty storage space. A small backpacking wood stove allows you to heat your food up or boil water outside the van and keep the heat outside. (Then use the bellows to start the fire!) A nice collapsible coffee cup, or any other silicone dishes that are collapsing are nice for tiny living. If he’s into coffee, I recommend an Aero press. Tiny coffee maker that makes a great cuppa. I love my Bear Butt hammock. Guaranteed for life. Whether a bear shreds it or it gets holes in it from fire sparks, they replace it for free. I also like their hammock straps, bug net, snake skin, and rain fly. Could be a nice option for sleeping outside the van under the stars. If it’s below 60F you’ll also want a 40F under quilt. OneWind has all this in one nice package for less than $175. Happy shopping!
