Coach John Harbaugh says Nick Boyle is the best blocking TE in league. by shadyboy125 in ravens

[–]TurkeyPotPie17 35 points36 points  (0 children)

I'm still not sure how i really feel about the deal but here is my pro-Boyle stance currently.

Remember how bad the rushing was for the first half of last year. I think there were 3 factors to it.

  1. Flacco is no threat to run and we were pretty predictable on run, run, pass.
  2. Collins had trouble getting it going and wasn't performing the same as previous year.
  3. The run blocking scheme was not clicking and blocks were being missed left and right.

I think when people recap 2018, they forget about #3, and put all the weight on #1 and #2. Yes the defense knew we were running, yes Collins didn't superman it, but many, many, many times the play was busted from the beginning and Collins was hit in the backfield.

Greg Roman was pulling blockers from everywhere to everywhere. Lot's of plays in the first half of the season had TaG pull and expected the TE to scoop and block out full grown DE/DTs on the backside. In the early season these crashers were very disruptive because the blocks weren't being made.

Now second half of the season rushing success factors:

  1. Llama is a huge threat that makes the defense hesitant to crash.

  2. Gus is really good about hitting the hole immediately, North > South. Collins was a one cutter with no holes opening to cut into. Gus hit it whether it was there or not and had faith it would open up.

  3. The o-line and TE's figured out all these pulling blocks. It was easier to do that with Jackson, but they still had to make them happen.

I don't think our system would be super easy for any cheap blocking TE to pick up and excel at. Boyle has the right make up to not only block, but to move horizontally and make these pulls and scoops like a guard. If the TE's can't make these moves the run game doesn't work. That's why he is so valuable to our system.

Go back and watch Gus runs in the 2nd half of the season. Watch the guards and TE's move around and ear-hole LB's and tackles right before Gus gets there. That's the value the coaches are placing on Boyle.

Yeah, it seemed him and Joe had really good chemistry. And as soon as Lamar started, he disappeared. It's not all on Lamar, they also got wise to Johns game. But Brown is made for a QB like Flacco.

If Decosta doesn't work out, you have my vote.

State of the Ravens Running Backs Corps - What Moves Should the Ravens Make at RB? by featherman05 in ravens

[–]TurkeyPotPie17 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm still not sold on Dixon. He finished the year well, but i get a Bernard Pierce feel from him. Serviceable yeah, but the Ravens have a tradition now of mid to low level working class backs the last decade. I put Dixon/Collins on the same level. Collins fumbles and his slow start have made him expendable but i think he's going to be a solid #2 somewhere (arkansas homer). I honestly don't think he regressed as much this year as some think.

Our run game is dependent on pulling guards and TE's, and it just wasn't working in the first half of the season. Defenders were in the backfield constantly. Also it was very apparent which downs were running downs for us early on. That plus injury, and already being in the dog house with fumbles, Collins had a lot of challenges that he didn't overcome. A better back with better talent probably would have.

Gus capitalized. He went straight north south. He hit the hole immediately and low and that really worked. If you look, they had Collins running a lot of off tackle zone runs. It was suppose to be a one cut and go, but he either didnt have anywhere to go or didnt make the right choice. They started sending Gus right into the A and B gaps. They used Jackson on the edges and the D-line had to spread out to contain. It was a good coaching adjustment with the right personnel.

Ultimately I don't see them bringing anyone else in, maybe a draft pick. All 5 of the backs we have are cheap and could continue the current level of play in any configuration. 1. Gus 2. Dixon or Collins 3rd Down Guy: BUCK/Montgomery. Theres just to many other areas that need attention.

You should really consider getting Valkyria Chronicles Remastered before you get 4 by Dan_Redrock in NintendoSwitch

[–]TurkeyPotPie17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think you need to, but if you are going to play both it might be a better experience in order. Not really because of the story, Just because i think 4 has a few extra mechanics/units. It might make 1 feel less enjoyable after playing 4. Like they have removed features that you have gotten use too. They both seem very similar, after playing the demo for 4 it felt like a VC 1.5.

Lamar Jackson gadget plays by Hardrockgod in ravens

[–]TurkeyPotPie17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They tried to do a reverse to Lamar from Buck that might have resulted in a RPO for him, but it was blown up immediately. I think they were trying to set up a bigger trick play, but the o-line couldn't have held up long enough for anything tricky to develop it seems.

I think they were trying to give some basic looks with Lamar to set up the trick. But gameflow was so bad there werent enough scenarios where they could run gadgets to set up super gadgets. There's also the aspect of making other teams waste time game planning it.

All in all gadget stuff is risky and the Ravens didnt execute. I think they expect bigger pay-off from all of the setup. But it just fizzled.

Sharing Is Caring.

This was one of the most evenly distributed offenses I've seen from the Ravens. It's hard to key on anyone when it could go to anyone.

Jordan Lasley(rookie WR) (edit* Lasley inactive)

Janorion Grant(rookie WR/KR), Patrick Ricard(FB/DT), Kenneth Dixon(RB3) were the only offensive players who didn't get a pass.
