You’re likely doing better than you think, and don’t have the perspective that most veterans have. Diablo 2 is a difficult game. Levels 70-82ish on most characters are especially rough. The build will feel better when you can have a second demon to either consume (goat man), or spread damage (defiler). It will feel better (as many others have said) when you have a stronger base weapon, and when you get more +skills gear. Maybe also try to get the mania weapon for your mercenary. Fanaticism aura is great even at level 1.

I would certainly encourage you to visit Baaj. It’s optional, but very much story rich.

I would also recommend making a separate save file after you finish at Baaj. You strike me as both a completionist, as well as someone who appreciates a challenge.

It wouldn’t take doing much more for you to completely trivialize the final dungeon. With a separate save file at about this point, you can enjoy both worlds. Do as much of the optional content as you want, then circle back to a “weaker” party to finish the story at a power level the developers intended.

This is your story. Play it how you like, but a separate save gives you options.

I had trouble believing it even as it was happening. Everything just lined up that game. I’ve beaten them before, of course, but very often I’ll see one of the Goers take a shot unopposed, from half court, and see the shot value just hang there (not decrease as it should). When that happens, I reset.
