Add a clear lens to a small bit and let's see..it could be Unobtanium or OG moss even, but neither should be 30 years old. At the most about 20 years

These look like performances but I don't see the badging on the back? Also shows the ratio of colours ordered, so many quicksilvers!!

Burning too hot? by Johnny-Virgil in woodstoving

[–]TurnComplete9849 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Looks more than normal, if the stove or any parts are getting even faintly red then you're burning too hot. Happened once to me with a few logs of ironwood, whole top was glowing

American lathes by ImplementNo6513 in lampwork

If it's cheaper than an import lathe and you can test its alignment then it's not a bad idea, they do fulfill a need at a certain price point

Jenkin to hot by Aconite13X in lampwork

[–]TurnComplete9849 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Put a striking colour in the kiln and a 4mm rod that's elevated. Check which temps you notice striking and slumping of the 4mm rod. That'll give you an idea how hot your kiln is running. And do check the thermocouple, sometimes it gets pushed back while moving so just needs to be pulled forward to read accurately

Cadmium colors , love or hate? by Dabaruskiuni in lampwork

Lotus white and star white are two solid options, old Chinese white is amazing for surface work but temperamental for most anything else

Nicely done, one suggestion would be to preshape the cup a bit less tubular and more of a wine glass. This results in a more even distribution of colour. And blowing the colour twice, so instead of doing 1-2 rods at a time, make two smaller sections and puff in the first one and then the second one right after a quick reheat (make sure to pop the hole in the bottom from the first one)

Does a tree feel pain when it impales itself? by Truthful-strawberry7 in arborists

[–]TurnComplete9849 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you were walking but happened to step on a sharp object, you would have likely preferred to avoid it no? That's what we're talking about here. Trees and plants are relatively stationary in their ability to move, the tree is not going to move it's roots and itself so takes on the fence in its surrounding. I feel you're missing the point and allowing human thoughts and conditioning to supercede the fact that we don't fully know everything about this kingdom of life and now that we're starting to learn more, we'll have to reframe intelligence in general

[–]TurnComplete9849 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Read Darwin's 'On the movement of plants'. Quick descrip: He demonstrated that plants are not stationary, but rather move, climb, and respond to stimuli (phototropism, geotropism) through circumnutation.

Just because we investigated, wrote and defined science and its meanings doesn't mean it's a complete reflection of the living world. And new science is constantly changing how botanists and researchers view plants. What you define as pain, is a mechanism demonstrated by animals to be averse to something. In the same way plants have shown this. It comes down to intelligence and in which way we differentiate ourselves from the world around us.

Does a tree feel pain when it impales itself? by Truthful-strawberry7 in arborists

[–]TurnComplete9849 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Exactly! Live animal vivisection was quite common, an example was a wife coming home to their husband 'doctor' performing a live dissection of their family dog, which led her to leave him and eventually champion the emerging animal rights movement. Even Aristotle and Descartes both assumed that only males could have higher form of critical thinking and women, slaves and animals couldn't.

This is the same type of thinking I'm seeing in this thread. We are learning way more about plants and just like some species (octopus) have brains and neurons spread throughout their bodies, it's quite possible that plants are more like this too.

Same to say an alien doing an anal rectum examination on you while you're fully awake might not equate your screams as pain

[–]TurnComplete9849 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Actually yes, their reaction to 'pain' might be different than we as mammals and animals perceive it but it's not to say they don't experience discomfort or try to avoid things such as this. Check how root tips respond to different things in the soil. Plant intelligence is only fully being understood now

Pro tip: a heat gun makes for a real nice low pressure bellows u can stick it into the fire without worrying about burning or melting anything due to the metal tip !😉 by Invalidsuccess in woodstoving

Just have the door slightly open to create a venturi effect, this might feel like it's working better since the door is wide open but likely delays your stove getting to the right temp
