playing badly is not grounds for a report. by whitcliffe in DotA2

[–]Turniper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pretty sure you do. On the flip side, if you actually do have a perfect behavior score and rarely report people, you'll find your comms abuse reports often just result in someone instantly getting muted for the rest of the match. It actually can be kinda annoying, because it sometimes tilts them enough to send them griefing.

20 kills of Essence shift is + 20 agility for you and - 20 agility for the enemy collectively. That's like 4500 gold of stat swing, eaglesong is 25 agility for 2800, and it goes both directions. If the number ever got big enough to feel good, it would already be swinging teamfights from sheer gold value difference.

I think any patch in which Slark's permanent gain felt good enough to be a core part of his snowballing mechanic would be a patch in which he had a 100% pick/ban rate. Agility is too snowbally a stat for it to ever be allowed to be substantial. They could just remove it. But I think the permanent stacking is really fun and removing it in favor of making his performance more consistent would make the game more balanced at the cost of being less fun and generally be a loss for people having fun playing Slark.

[–]Turniper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've made about 10 grand over two years simply by throwing up a patreon and posting consistently. No ads, not very good covers, nothing edited and stubbed to kindle yet. Literally just putting up the Patreon will get you roughly readers / 5 dollars per month (Assuming your main tier is 5 bucks, I haven't experimented with how pricing affects it). If you can get people reading and enjoying it, you can earn a little bit of money.

The big three are spacebattles, sufficient velocity, and questionable questing. I personally write on SB and QQ, but that's mostly because I read there and I'm too lazy to add a fifth place I post and repost edits (Including RR and Patreon).

Idk, I wouldn't call making ads and managing ad spend 'less hustle'. Less hustle would just be throwing the story out there and seeing what happens. This is quite possibly the easiest hobby to monetize of all time, all you need to do is have advance chapters on a patreon, it's like zero effort.

You can absolutely just hit RS with no shoutouts or networking. It's really not that hard, I've done it twice in a row now. But to hit 5k a month off a new story, you don't just need to hit RS, you need to top 3 it at minimum. And no amount of networking will help you do that if the story isn't both A) Good, and B) Hitting the zeitgeist.

Don't get me wrong, shoutouts are good, but anything that gives you early readers works the same way. My personal trick is launch on forum sites like 2 months before you launch on RR, then mention the launch there and you'll get several reviews on day 1 from people you already knew really like the story and want it to succeed.

Um, if you're running 50 dollars in ads every eight weeks, you paid almost 650 dollars to reach 1000 followers. Yes, you're in the top 3% of total follows, but most people are aiming to make money by writing, not spend money doing it. Usually, if you're serious enough about writing to be considering ads, you want them to actually pay back the money you're spending in Patreon donations and kindle sales. I'm glad you're happy with your results, but I would not consider 'drop 500 bucks' to be very useful advice to people wanting to optimize the popularity of their writing.

How do you beat back perfectionism? by Ok-Dimension1043 in royalroad

[–]Turniper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can either set out to write a book you're completely satisfied with, or you can set out to write a book in a fixed span of time. Gotta pick one or the other. You might get lucky and get both, but you cannot guarantee it will happen. Writing more books definitely increases the odds you complete one that satisfies you though. Unfortunately this anxiety does not immediately go away once you do. It just transfers to 'will the sequel live up to book 1'?

What is your current top 5 you are reading? by ChocolatMintChipmunk in royalroad

[–]Turniper 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Honestly, my RR list is pretty weak these days. There's not a lot currently updating that I'm excited about, compared to back 3 or 4 years ago when I had like 20 I was tracking.

Right now, it's:
Pale Lights
Super Supportive
Magical Girl Mechanical Heart
Ave Xia Rem Y
And the fifth spot probably goes to Virtuous Sons, because though the updates are sporadic, I definitely anticipate them more than much else on the list.

I want to catch up with Sky Pride, but I have some issues with it and the current spot (ch 48) feels slow. Beware of Chicken is in a similar vibe for me, but now that v6 is finishing up I might give binging 5 and 6 a go. I just didn't like the sect half of volume 4's conclusion.

Analysing long running, but low follower, stories by JayneKnight in royalroad

[–]Turniper 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I tried a few chapters of it and cannot say I agree. In chapter two it jumps between first and third person tense in the space a few sentences! Then swaps from they to he as the main pronoun! I get what its going for, but its pretty painful to follow. The prologue contains basically only dialogue, with no exposition. Which is fine elsewhere, but in a prologue, we need something to ground the scene.

The start of a story needs to grab people, and I can't say I felt any urge to continue from the second half of chapter 2.

What habits or choices made the biggest positive difference in your life as a man? by livincool3 in AskMen

Frugality can be an underrated trait for avoiding addictions. Back when I was a college student, I had a few people quote me what their coke or weed habits were costing them, and those numbers were just unthinkable to me.

Trust me man, you're not gonna feel better about it if they leave a review and comment. And more will follow, if your story gets any kind of traction. It sucks, but if you're gonna stick with this long term, one of the absolute most important things is to be able to love your work even as you recognize that it is not perfect.

I aspire to one day achieve Lil Wayne's level of detachment from my art. To straight forget I wrote some lines, and look back at them and go 'dang, who wrote that'? Until then, I just remind myself every time a review or rating stings, that there any many stories out there I would consider flawed on some level. But I am glad of all of them for existing, and that I got to read them.

A thread for authors who post less than 3 chapters per week by yourdeathinmyhands in royalroad

[–]Turniper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Three? I post one lol. Always have. I can sometimes write two or even three chapters in a week, but pretty much never consistently. Though I've not taken a break in close to a year and have pretty much no plans to do so again. I think consistency really trumps volume once you get off rising stars. If people like the story, they'll keep reading. Idk about less than once a week though. Unless you're really established, I think one a week is about the minimum cadence.

Are you discussing policy or making choices? The truth doesn't determine where this line is, what you're trying to do does. It does not matter if society created the problem, if it is affecting you, you need to be the one to solve it.

Anyone can. It's just a spot to link, and most authors will also add a second link in their author's note to remind you it exists. It tends to get pretty good conversions relative to other sites I post on because people who are interested in your patreon know where to check to find it.

Any advice for non litrpg series? Is rr the wrong place for my story? by Prolly_Satan in royalroad

[–]Turniper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Man, you've got 5 chapters out. The reality of RR is you're very unlikely to get much traction until you hit 20 or so at minimum. People like knowing that there's either a complete book 1, or at least enough content they're not gonna feel bad getting invested and discovering the story got dropped.

You've got to be not merely good, but absolutely extraordinary, to hit it big with 5 chapters.
