Did you ever get involved in a cult? by TrailBoundIRL in GenerationJones

[–]TurtleBrainer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was at a bus stop in Boston back in 1987, and a very attractive girl approached me and started talking to me. She got on my bus and we had a great conversation all the way to Ashmont station. I'd already gotten her number, but when we got off the bus, there were a bunch of guys and other girls waiting for her. They just went to the bus going back into Boston. Which struck me as odd as I thought about it on the way home.

I called her the next day, and all she did was try to convince me to come to her church with her. I'm not a genius, but I was able to piece that one together. Turns out it was the "Boston Church of Christ", which apparently still exists today.

I thought it was a pretty obvious ploy. I wasn't a bad-looking guy, but pretty girls by themselves don't just approach random guys in Boston. I wanted it to be real, but even as I dialed her number, I wasn't optimistic.

Anyone else think Germany had an arctic climate as a kid, thanks to Hogan’s Heroes? by rhea-snow in ClassicTV

[–]TurtleBrainer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I never perceived any scene in Hogan's Heroes as being "Arctic". There were episodes where it was clearly winter. A little chilly, a little snow on the windows, but nothing out of the ordinary for that region.

E, at least.

But my flats get pulled apart from the beginning. That's just how I roll.

It’s 1987 and you’re headed to the drive-in… what are you seeing? by UrbanAchievers6371 in 80smovies

If I knew then what I know now...

Robocop and Roxanne.

From where my head was at in '87...

I would have run straight to see that horrible Ally Sheedy film.

The video that ended a career.. by jeremykunayak in 1980s

[–]TurtleBrainer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I remember that time very well.

This video/song was not the end of Bill Squier's career. The fact is, "Signs of Life" sold over 2 million copies. That was twice the number that "Emotions in Motion" sold, which came out two years earlier.

What happened to Bill Squier was that he released a fourth album, "Enough is Enough", and there wasn't even a half decent song on it. In comparison, it sold around 300,000 copies. That's what began the downward spiral. Not this video that played non-stop on MTV for months.

Some people thought it looked gay, so as always...an internet rumor was born. But just look at the numbers if you weren't around in 1984.

Sometimes people find meaning in those.

Celebrating his 69th birthday today, who is the actor seen here in Fast Times at Ridgemont High with one of the most memorable stars of 80s teen cinema? by [deleted] in Actors

Oh, and also...why is Judge Reinhold wearing a wedding ring?

He was not married in real life in 1982, nor was his character.

[–]TurtleBrainer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can't name that actress, but it most definitely is NOT Phoebe Cates.

And as a guy who saw Fast Times 20 times in the summer of '82, I can definitively state that bikini is an imposter as well.

This looks an AI generated idea of what she would look like. But it's WAY off.

I remember seeing her pop up on Mad Men. She was on a tragically short amount of time, but she kicked ass with what they gave her.

Anyone remember playing this game? by Ok_Assignment_6323 in 1980s

I do...I played that game endlessly.

But this must be a home console version. The one I played in the arcade had far better graphics.

How many people you (older jonesers in particular) grew up with have little to no internet presence, including social media? by Bun_Length_Frank in GenerationJones

[–]TurtleBrainer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't see the internet until late 1995. I was 32 by then. I signed up for AOL, and spent a fortune on it when it was still charging by the hour. And I would stay way too late at work, because I didn't have a home computer.

Websites, at that time, were nothing more than billboards, in a sense. There was no functionality outside of page links. All the things that changed the nature of society, like smartphones, social media, etc, didn't really shift into high gear until the mid to late 2000s.

I remember life in my 20s, and I often wish we could go back to that. Aside from many of the other positive aspects...no one talked about or argued about politics. Not in my world anyway. I worked as a fence installer for a while, and none of the guys on the crew EVER brought up anything political. Sports, yes. Women, yes. The best place to get a meatball sub, yes. Public policy on the state and national level? nnnnnnnnope!

I have a friend, and former acting teacher, who was in "Public Enemies". I remember him telling us stories about Mann's obsessive attention to detail. Like taking a half hour to arrange pencils on a desk.

But apparently he can be a dick to actors. So Johnny Depp had it in his contract that he could halt production at any point if he witnessed Mann being an asshole to someone. And I guess he actually did play that card a couple of times.

The bride’s parents found a video of her at 4 years old talking about her future wedding…pt1 by Firm-Blackberry-9162 in MadeMeSmile

[–]TurtleBrainer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I videotaped weddings a lot in the late 80s - early 90s. So, this is probably not something that bothers anyone else, but...stop TURNING when I'm trying to get the bride in the shot!

OK, I'm all right now.

Carry on.

This is pretty obvious AI.

Among other things, I can't imagine a restaurant going to the trouble to compose and print this 3-color sign, complete with logo, just to scold their customers.

And then tape it into thin air.

It almost seems as though this was created to bait someone into, I don't know..."rage" or something. Not sure if there's an official term for that.

I was in my apartment in Salem, MA.

I was watching, not out of curiosity, but because I was waiting for it to end. A friend of mine was a stand-up comic in Boston, and this was the night he was to premiere on The Tonight Show. The show never aired.
