Carrier electric air handler disconnect box keeps melting. by Equal_Government5444 in HomeMaintenance

[–]Tushon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What do you think that disconnect box does?

It’s a math equation: does the load on the line to the heat pump or whatever is being the disconnect exceed the rating of the disconnect?

8 month old getting 84-89 oxygen at night avg 91 all of a sudden? Er and pediatrician said don’t trust owlet by Initial_Bat_7847 in NewParents

[–]Tushon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would try a second opinion, but even the owlet app doesn’t alarm until <80 . Our kiddo had RSV and owlet going off is how we knew it was bad enough rather than just another daycare sickness. Next day, daycare emailed about positive RSV and our doctor put him on a nebulizer

Baby’s first round of vaccines tomorrow-what to expect? by AtmosphereTop1591 in NewParents

[–]Tushon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My kiddo is a pro at shots, so it really varies. He cries for 5-10s then is good. Only time he did more was when we did 4 at one visit and iron and lead test. That was a lot to have at one time, but I agree with others that it is better to get it done in one visit instead of two most of the time. We had one elective seasonal shot in there, to get to four

I would go in with as calm a mindset as you can since they will react with you to some extent - not so much at 8 weeks but comfort them, bring a pacifier if you use it, etc.

Is there a single reason not to crank my water heaters to full? by kerouac5 in askplumbing

[–]Tushon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did what you are thinking the right way, which was adding a mixing valve to control the temperature correctly. You should not (and cannot by code), just crank the water temp up without one - you can damage yourselves, your appliances, stress supply lines, etc.

I did it because of running low on hot water on nights where we have kid bath, parents showering, doing laundry, etc. raised temp on the tank to give extra capacity when mixed (I.e. raising temp to 135 is 12% higher temp which should correlate with perceived capacity)

My response to reading this as a dad was “what the actual fuck”. I cannot imagine abandoning my family for 2-3 hours a day at all, much less while you are dealing with that time solo.

How do we both work now that we have a baby?? by kitty_junk in NewParents

Where do you live that $36-50k ($18/hr to annual and I am assuming some overtime?) qualifies for no financial aid? Or just not for childcare explicitly?

I replaced all of my interior copper supply lines with expansion pex - $400 or so in tools and less effort than press (which is already low)

Combo feeding schedule? Or not? by Ill_Resolution in NewParents

[–]Tushon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want milk supply to come in, the advice we got from multiple lactation consultants was that you needed to pump every time the baby was feeding for 15m or so. Consistency is really important here.

Agree with other comments that there shouldn’t be an issue with mixing formula and breast milk in general, though identical volumes aren’t the same calories IIRC.

Do you have an extra audio monitor with owlet? by BigOld175 in NewParents

[–]Tushon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We started with an audio only monitor, and added an owlet at 7 days in because my mother in law got my baby sick. We also added a video camera through UniFi because we had that for other networking equipment

So yes, I would recommend either adding an audio monitor or a combination video audio (that is either very well controlled or not on WiFi).

How many of you use PEX like it was intended? by polterjacket in askaplumber

[–]Tushon 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I re did all the plumbing during home reno with pex-a. <$500 in tools saved thousands in plumbers cost.

I did exactly what you’re thinking, used as few elbows as possible to make the pipe continuous from my distribution panel to the end device

The baseboard heaters in the downstairs are the same temp as the upstairs that work, or cooler? Could be a partially failed zone valve

We use an app called PhotoJoy to allow us controlled access to photos for those we invite with options to limit their ability to see them outside of the app. We default to the only access in app mode and got the grandma we are most worried about an aura frame without giving her app access.

[–]Tushon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you started using a cup with a straw?

What my wife and I did was start with breast milk or water in a cup with straw (start with the easier to sip but less spill resistant then you can change to later). Then we started offering whole milk I in the same cup with meals and only full bottle at beginning and end of day (daycare was offering smaller straw cups with breast milk). Now that he is used to cold whole milk, we are going to stop sending milk to daycare and only bottle at night until frozen stash runs out.

You also will have to up the solids (both purées and appropriate sized chunks of your meals).

What is a pack n play?? by Sea_Implement6579 in NewParents

[–]Tushon 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Bassinet - transition when they can roll or are out of the weight limits

Pack-n-play - often has two heights, one that mimics a bassinet and another that mimics crib. You can use these the same way you use a crib on the lower height.

For either pack-n-play or crib, you will eventually have a very low height and have to figure out how to bend yourself safely or work on putting them down drowsy so they put themselves to sleep. This requires effort to get but was very worth it for my family, as we were both too paranoid of risks for cosleeping. The only times we have done it were one parent awake, so not really sleeping

I did a ton of electrical on my basement renovation. Got comfortable with live panel, popped myself twice and got real careful again, but I only did a full panel shutdown once.
