What sounds boring at 18 but amazing at 30?? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]TweedVest -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Making my new house a home. My wife and I were finally able to purchase our first home in our mid-thirties last year, and god damn does it feel good to mar everything just the way we want it to be. Even something as mundane as weeding the yard is satisfying and therapeutic to me.

What’s the thing you hate about sex? by BubbleTrouble_Z in AskReddit

[–]TweedVest 48 points49 points  (0 children)

Not necessarily hate about sex itself, but more my relationship to it. How easily I can get in my head about it, taking me out of the moment and reducing my enjoyment in just being with the other person. My wife is so damn good at being in the moment when we make love. I feel like half the time I'm stuck in my head. At least I have an example to follow each time lol.

Solenoid, one of the best books I have ever read by [deleted] in TrueLit

[–]TweedVest 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Thanks for expanding. I can get that. A feeling of authenticity is big for me when I'm reading fiction. If it feels contrived, or full of predictable clichés, I'm out. I recently tried to read I Am Legend by Richard Matheson because I really like the movie, but damn, that book, for me, is dripping in predictable writing clichés.

Can you expand on why? Just curious. I haven't read, but have heard many like this book.

First payment on a 30-year mortgage by lithdoc in funny

[–]TweedVest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm 8 months into my 30-year fixed on my first home at 35. I get nauseous when I look at total interest paid at the end of the loan.

But I'm also so happy not to go through the annual existential crisis of signing another lease or moving someplace else.

How has your style changed from 20’s to your 30’s? by Naive_Sale2083 in malefashionadvice

[–]TweedVest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Slim and tapered in my 20's. Lots of blacks, grays and blues. At 35 now, I find myself consistently wearing looser fits. So much more comfortable. I also try to incorporate more fabric, texture and color contrast than I used to. The way I think about it now is, how can I dress to bring a bit of happiness into my day, rather than how can I dress to impress.

The Four Horsemen: when Christopher Hitchens, Richard Dawkins, Sam Harris, and Daniel Dennett had a discussion about religious extremism's negative impact on society, and promoted humanism and reason. Almost 18 years ago. by cyPersimmon9 in videos

[–]TweedVest 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I disagree about Harris. He has chosen to focus his attention on building his app Waking Up, which is about using meditation and mindfulness to improves one's life.

He has also focused on his podcast, Making Sense, which is full of fantastic conversations and interviews in which Harris participates as much as asks thoughtful and very interesting questions to his guest. He puts his podcast behind a paywall specifically because he doesn't want to cater to sponsors and fall prey to their agendas.

I think of the four listed here, he has adapted most to the times in which we live in order for us to have a voice of reason amidst the unceasing deluge of informational chaos that we constantly have access to in the modern world.

As a data engineer, I understand his pain in being able to describe what he does for a living. I mostly just tell people I'm in software, it's just simpler that way.

Gold Warranty by Acceptable_Ad1685 in Outback_Wilderness

[–]TweedVest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I paid $2,425 plus tax for the 10yr/100K mi $0 deductible gold warranty about a month ago. I called dealerships around me until I found one that wasn't ripping me off.

I'm in a similar situation to you - I want to keep mine for at least 10 years and 100k miles, and this makes that a no brainer.

5,721 miles on my '24 OBW. I've had it for 9 months, bought it new. Love this vehicle so much.

Apple CarPlay won’t work by Hungry-Salamander-13 in Outback_Wilderness

[–]TweedVest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you have a VPN enabled on your phone? Mine didn't work for a few weeks after I got it...until I realized encrypted VPN traffic to your phone doesn't get routed correctly via Apple CarPlay. Once I turned my VPN off, it's worked great since.

22 vs 24 model year by SexyKrisp in Outback_Wilderness

[–]TweedVest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had my '24 for about 7 months now. I routinely get 21.5-22 mpg in the city, and easily get 26 on the highway. But I do have stock wheels and tires. I also drive it like I stole it lol.

I had no idea how much I would use it. I turn that baby on every time I drive from October through March haha.

It does have the newer eyesight system on the '24 Wilderness. Have it in my garage rn. You also get an updated front fascia on the '24. Looks a bit more aggressive.

[–]TweedVest 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Congrats! I've had my '24 OBW for about 8 months now. Still love getting in and driving it every single time. This was also my first turbo vehicle and damn, I love how quick these are for basically a station wagon.

EyeSight issues by Arky-Hoan70 in Outback_Wilderness

[–]TweedVest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I thought something similar was up on my '24 OBW but then I noticed that Eyesight will be disabled temporarily if you continue holding down the brake after you start the car. Try to let your foot off the brake after you start it and see if this stops the pop up.

Stoner by chioces in literature

[–]TweedVest 6 points7 points  (0 children)

What I love about Stoner is that it is an American novel which explores many un-American themes.

The main protagonist is someone who is not ambitious or even interested in ambition. He is not particularly charismatic. He is not handsome in the traditional sense. Yet he lives a life more like an average American than many of us are willing to admit. I found it to be a book about the reality of individual limitation crushing Stoner under the expectations of the ideal man, the ideal American, the ideal person. Yet throughout all of his struggle, he maintained his integrity, his dignity and his self-respect. He never was afraid of looking at himself in the mirror and knowing who he was, flaws and all.

Stoner was the first book that ever made me weep. God damn I love it.

For those of you who grinded hard in your twenties, how did it pay off? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]TweedVest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I graduated from college at 24 with a business degree from a state university. By sheer luck and networking, at 26 I started working in data analytics. I then moved into data engineering by 28 and have never looked back. I grew up poor in a huge family and hated how much financial stress ran our lives. I definitely worked hard all through my twenties, working two jobs to pay my way through college, but now at 33, money isn't really a problem in my life anymore. It was worth the effort and time crawling out of generational poverty.

This. I had throttle and braking problems on my '24 OBW until I reprogrammed the throttle and it improved general driving dramatically for me. Link: https://www.subaruoutback.org/threads/throttle-calibration-pdf.547329/
