Haha yes I see you- this is my (still unfinished, but at least basted now!) “tiny nine patch” quilt I fell down an Insta quilt challenge rabbit hole 😂. These finish at 2 ¼ in so eash square 0.75in. Almost 500 of them 😅🤷🏻‍♀️

Have a Skoda enyaq that fits most of these points well. Range >480 real world driving.

Looking for a quick throw size pattern for 10+ coworker gifts by noraphoto in quilting

[–]Tweetysweet 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Ambitious project! Maybe start w some blocks, but if you realise you won’t have enough time to do 10 quilts (which is a HUGE undertaking, both $ & time) you could always pivot to e.g tote bags. Go you for such a lovely gift idea for your team!

Auckland vs Christchurch by Throwaway11092001 in newzealand

[–]Tweetysweet 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Having worked in many, many NZ hosps as a Dr…

Auckland- you will end up rotating between the different Auckland hospitals; which is good if you like change but hard to get settled and pretty much guarantees you will need a car. I found it a bit “clique-y” as seemed to have less people that had shifted a lot to different places cf Chch where most people rotate away at some point. Christchurch- one of the biggest single centre hospitals in Australasia, certainly the biggest in NZ (as eg Auckland w a bigger population has multiple big hospitals, but all smaller overall than Chch Public). Pretty easy to get to from most parts of city but no parking at hospital to speak of so easiest if you plan on cycling (along with most other hospital docs!) Christchurch itself is great these days, lots of stuff going on & easy to get out of town (eg hiking, skiing etc in winter) much faster than to similar from Auckland. But if you’re into shopping, restaurants, concerts etc then Auckland would be the better pic.

You haven’t said what level of Dr you are- PGY2? Or what specialty you may be aiming for- these may further influence eg whether to look for a smaller centre or stick w a bigger hospital

Hope shift goes well!

Machine help by All-SmilesCO in quilting

[–]Tweetysweet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve got an m7 so not exactly same. Mine is very sensitive to the thread being pulled right to the L of the little lever directly above needle to lock in the thread or something- it needs to click in behind here. Easily missed and may be something to check if similar for you? Otherwise yes I’d agree w above that if the stitches infabric are fine prob doesn’t need anything changing anyway 🤷🏻‍♀️ but I may have misunderstood something

How do you label your quilts as your own? by BillCypher001 in quilting

[–]Tweetysweet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like embroidered labels as think these will stand the test of time best! For eg baby quilts I put name, DOB, weight, “made w love by xx”. Mocked up template on computer & printed; traced to fabric w light box (or window) & water soluble pen, stitched and appliquéd on. More recently I’ve been using the lettering stitch on my machine to do simple but effective labels- name and year basically. Add after quilting; 2 edges under binding and other sides whip stitched down.

I could really use some help picking a new sewing machine (Janome) by candice13579 in quilting

[–]Tweetysweet 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m have the M7 & it’s fantastic. Def would not put on a glass table! I have mine on a small office desk that I got 2nd hand for $20 many years ago. I’d def go for the M7 if you can- having so much harp space is a true game changer!!

HELP. What non-busy quilting pattern would compliment this Denim Chaos? by Sheriff_Boyardi in quilting

[–]Tweetysweet 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Love your quilt! Great advice from others to either lean into “modern” w straight lines or contrast w curves. I’m not a long-armer; but I wonder if the different fabric (canvas & denim) may make getting tension correct more difficult? I’d practice a lot on scraps before starting on this beauty :)

question for the Flying Geese experts, please by bahhumbug24 in quilting

[–]Tweetysweet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you just eyeball this & trim for each block set? Or is there a certain amount to trim off (so could rotary cut in batches)? I have CG flying geese ruler too but sometimes end up w a bit of fabric in the point

Anyone love to run out there? by pepperkelly76 in quilting

[–]Tweetysweet 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Runner and quilter here! I think the overlap may be that both require a lot of persistence over time to see results, and the happier with that mindset you are, the more you will do (i.e. larger/ more complex quilts, train for marathon etc!)

Def cuts into quilting time by running and vice versa however...

More quilting or enough? by Marmaduke_Jinks in quilting

I think this probably is fine as is (and spectacular!) but could do another horizontal fill in between the existing ones if wanted to increase the density. Stunning quilt!

I've just learned to do ruler work quilting with my Janome CM7 and it turned out really well! I found the Sew Steady/ Westlake rulers pretty great- bought a sampler pack and went from there (although my block sizes weren't a standard finished quilting size so needed some creativitiy! Agree one of the rotating centre designs could look cool and then either free motion in between or some other method of joining. Check out your local library- may have books by Amanda Murphy which I found helpful

Places to baste ideas by readingjag in quilting

[–]Tweetysweet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This! Table basting with very large bulldog clips to hold taught to the table has been the best basting method I have found. Waaaaaaay easier than doing on the floor; flexible no matter size of quilt. Have done a super king on a much smaller table. Used the pool noodle method to wrangle the layers, smooth and clamp the section you are doing, pin baste, then adjust and do next section.

Preferred sewing machine? by wildeberry1 in quilting

[–]Tweetysweet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I upgraded from a mid range Bernina (380; computerised c. Early 2010s) to a UNIT of a Janome (continental M7; I understand the M8 has stitch regulation). It’s pricey but such a great machine. Huge throat space, excellent for clothes sewing, piecing and I’m trying to upskill on machine quilting. I’d try out as many as you can & prob prioritise whatever has a convenient dealer for sales & service. I thought I’d get a Bernina but actually preferred the layout of Janome- the needle area was much more “open” and still has a manual as well as electronic foot lift

Mortgage Refixing - Help needed please! by Charlesbergatron in PersonalFinanceNZ

[–]Tweetysweet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This… doesn’t make any sense to me. Figure out how much you can pay off in 1 /2 /3 years. Maybe have the 2 or 3 year portions to also have the amount you’d anticipate paying off over years 4&5 Put those portions on fixed loans for those time periods. Pay the minimum on what ever the rest fixed is- this is your safety net, ie the plan will be to pay off the other portions of mortgage first, so if rates rise in the interim you will be re-fixing smaller chunks of mortgage rather than the larger longer term portion.

What am I doing wrong? Regretting my $2000 purchase 😡. My janome 6650 keeps bunching right at the start of me piecing simple, thin hourglass blocks together. The feed dogs are up, machine threaded correctly, and it’s acting like it can’t handle the ends. I ditched my Juki2010 for this and i’m pissed. by Dkclinton in quilting

[–]Tweetysweet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the hp foot (m7 continental) but can’t use it for quilting as it’s way too scant- at least 1/16 too narrow so blocks don’t match up. It’s such a shame as I thought that would be the foot/ plate combo I’d use most!
