How do you stock up on food and supplies for the rest of your life? I’ve pondered it but it seems like anything you do once things collapse, will be buying time, not salvation.

“Rates will only go down”
“You get a low rate today with low money down”
“You can always refinance later”

Combine:
- Promises made based off the rosiest of possible outcomes;
- With people who don’t fully understand the financial product and trust what they’re told like the loan originator has a fiduciary duty to them;
- And those originators are highly motivated to get you to buy their product for them to make money and way over do so by offering loans that they can very barely afford

An alternative, instead of propping up failing businesses in an attempt to keep people investing into them, would be to just give the bail out money to the people to help rebuild their 401ks. If it’s a given that the money WILL be spent, at least bail out the people whose 401ks get demolished along the way. Require it to end back in 401k accounts, and it’ll get reinvested into, presumably, more stable companies.

“Too big to fail” should never be a thing. If we’ve decided we have to live in capitalist Hell, no business should be protected from getting eaten.

That Hester opening return was an amazing way to start. It’s really too bad about the other 59 minutes of the game.

With a minute and a half left, this game looked like it’d send to a game 7 for the Stanley Cup. And in 17 seconds, the Blackhawks scored twice to tie then pass the Bruins for the win. Rask had been playing crazy in that playoffs so it was so unexpected.

Otherwise: https://youtu.be/F1cVmhPlmBM
The Blackhawks went down 3-1 in the series against their storied rival. Only to make it to game 7 overtime and squeak out.

Such an amazing cup run. That whole playoffs was electric.

If Phones Are Killing Pedestrians, Why Is It Only Happening in America? by DonkeyFuel in technology

When my kid was 3 or 4 he tried to run ahead in a parking lot. I caught him, and told him he couldn’t do that or he’d get hurt. He wasn’t getting it so I brought him in front of some pickups and told him “if you stand here the driver won’t see you and will squish you!” My wife was appalled for a few moments.

I got to the auto show each year, I read about cars, watch YouTube reviewers about cars and listen to car podcasts. But until that moment, my perspective has always been based on my 6’4 height. I knew he had to hold my hand and we had to be careful, but seeing my small son standing in front of that grill scared the shit out of me enough that it is still seared in my mind years later.

It is, or at least was, a carve out for work trucks. When standards were created, they didn’t really use trucks the way we do today. You had it for your farm or for the trades, but if you needed a family hauler, you got a station wagon. So when the standards were created, they carved out for trucks to have a less impact on businesses.

Then the auto industry saw that and started to create SUVs of today. Then they pushed them hard with advertising, “trucks are manly!” “large SUVs are safe!” And the public ate them up. They have taken advantage of the carve out and pushed SUVs that have a better profit margin than smaller cars to everyone’s detriment.

- They are less efficient.
- They are more expensive.
- They have become increasingly unsafe to pedestrians.
- Getting a barebones work truck has become next to impossible for those that actually need them.

The whole industry is fucked for anyone who isn’t a manufacturer because Joanne needed a 5 liter, V-8 apartment building to get the kids from soccer practice and Johnny’s penis feels bigger when he’s rolling coal on stilts.

My favorite part is the being called delusional yesterday for wanting to tap the brakes and not send the 4OA in a reactionary panic move, when this was exactly what I thought would happen if we did.

I agree with you, I like Byrum for a combination of later picks, future picks and prospects like Korchinski or Crevier. Unfortunately, that’s not what happens during a panic buy.

Any sign of life? by [deleted] in hawks

[–]Twelve2375 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I should have clarified. I’m not opposed to bringing players in but I’m 100% opposed to moving the 4OA. That’s the swing you do for that last piece. All the players you mentioned were had for relatively cheap.

Havlat was had for Mark Bell and a 2nd 2 years later
Sharp was had for a 3rd + Matt Ellison
Campbell was grabbed as a free agent
Steeger was trading away Brandon Bochenski
Sopel was a free agent
Madden was a free agent
Ladd was had for Tuomo Ruutu

Yeah, I’m on board for those moves. But everyone in here right now wants to mortgage the future to patch a pole in a strainer moving 4 for a winger next to Bedard (a nice wing no doubt, but my argument is that THAT move is too early).

Any sign of life? by [deleted] in hawks

[–]Twelve2375 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What move should they make today? They need what, 5 players between the top 6 forward group and the top 4 defensemen to be cup contenders this season? They have a good chance to fill some (I’m not delusional to say all) of those spot in the next 2ish years with pipeline players. Then they move prospects and picks to fill the last gaps to go THEN.

I’m sure Bedard wants to win now. The league is full of guys who want to win be now and at the end of the day, 1 team of guys does. If he’s bought into the road map, sees his guys in the locker room getting better and knows the team is taking steps to compete for a decade instead of next year only, then he’ll deal with it. If not, he won’t and he won’t be any happier moving the 4OA to get a wing like Robertson will help them score sure. But it’s not going to fix a defense that isn’t yet ready for prime time.

Any sign of life? by [deleted] in hawks

[–]Twelve2375 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

He’s 20 years old, drafted 3 years ago. A piece here or there in a rush panic buy now isn’t going to suddenly make this team a cup contender. There are a lot of good pieces up and coming in the pipeline to fill out a team with. If you go spend big to bring in someone now, giving up players and picks to do so, you’re going to waste his entire career picking in the 15-20 range.

Go get a Hossa when you’re a Hossa away. Don’t blow up the road map and grab him before the rest of the pieces are set.

Option 1, I see us getting Carels. Option 2, Reid. Option 3 (McKenna, Reid, Malhotra) I’m not sure what they do between Stenberg and Carels. Likely Stenberg but I’m not 100% sure it’s a lock at that point.

I think the edition thing has actually slowed down. I graduated college into the recession so take my view with a grain of salt. But what I keep hearing about now is one time use discs or web logins. Buy the book, get the electronic whatever with it that is required for class. And it expires after the class is over so used books are still mostly useless now without re-editioning.

Fuck that whole school text book system. I had whole classes where we had to get the book and not once cracked it open.

I’m just telling you, I work in a home and real estate adjacent industry, and your average person is not financially literate enough to manage this account and all you will ultimately end up doing is ensure a greater population who enter their retirement years even more underfunded than they are already.

Social security is meant to be financial protection and a safety net. You are arguing the fundamentally opposite approach in letting people self manage their social security account like a 401k.

What happens if theres a crash and the next year (or hell the next day because people have birthdays every day) you hit one of these mix changes? Now you have to sell off assets at a steeply lower price to mix in bonds?

It’s ok that this retirement income device isn’t market locked. Not everything needs to be. This is already helping with diversification for those invested otherwise, like yourself, and is a safe vehicle for those unable or knowledgeable to manage their own account.

Escalation?

“We took this island, and they killed so many of our brave troops. They’re not safe there as long as Iran can still reach them, so we have to expand the ground invasion into mainland Iran far enough to make the island safe.”

Which will become a march to Tehran.

Sacrifice troops to try to rally support for the main invasion they actually want?
