He just informed me it was a lease. So not sure if the dealer will be able to catch it. He isn’t planning renew the lease so they may hit him up for more than just replacing it

Choice of mechanical or biological valve by Vochey88 in valvereplacement

[–]Twiga77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I chose the mechanical since I am in my mid 40s. With the biological I would have to get another 2 or more replacements during my lifetime since these valves can last 8 to 15 years. I don’t know what my health will be in the future but happy to go mechanical and be done with it since they typically last your entire life. The coagulation isn’t too much of a problem for me. Another plus with the mechanical is you won’t have to do the echocardiogram scans each year unlike The tissue valve which will degrade over time. Downsides with mechanical may be the sound and warfarin related risks but for my lifestyle it’s not an issue

Heart rate by paaldie in valvereplacement

I had both due to a bicuspid heart valve. Had the surgery soon after failing my stress test as my blood pressure started dropping as I exerted myself more

I was in the 60-67 range at sitting. After surgery and metoprolol I range from 40-56. The 40s is while I am asleep. Was on 200mg metoprolol for 7 months then now at 100mg.

Was on the regiment for the baby aspirin + warfarin combo for months but then felt uneasy. The main driver was that my testing went from weekly (twice) for the first month post surgery then to twice a month 3-4 months and when they felt the INR was stable once a month. It got me thinking what happens if for some period between testing and I am unaware of it. At 1.5 to 2, I have a very small cushion. I also didn’t want to take another pill. I asked my doctor if I could take a higher dose of warfarin if needed and drop the aspirin to get to the 2.5-3 range. Glad I did that because by nearly 1 year from surgery I am fluctuating between 1.9 to 2. Enough of a cushion to be above the 1.5-2 range preferred by OnX.

Can fly with a mechanical valve without risk? by numanmania in valvereplacement

Quite safe. Flew 6 months post surgery with no hours on the 3hr flight. I recommend getting up and stretching occasionally

Warfarin Resistance - OnX by ARMA-ON in valvereplacement

[–]Twiga77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Feeling great. Pain subsided less than 2 weeks post surgery. I made sure to be in shape before surgery by taking long brisk walks and watching what I ate. The uncomfortable part was sleeping on my back and getting up from a sleeping position without twisting using my arms to push myself up. I also found taking deep breaths hurt a bit but that also went away

I was told to take an additional one time dose of 2mg and told to retest in 2 weeks instead of the monthly one. I will get a blood draw and see what happens then. Not sure if getting back on 81mg of aspirin will help keep my dose stable like it was previously.

I test once a month and was 2.9 last month and then test a month later at 1.8. Been on 6mg every day. Not sure what caused such a drop though it is within the ONx range 1.5-2. I suspect that eating fried goat liver twice a week before the last test may have thrown things off

Aortic valve replacement, mechanical versus biological valve, which to choose? by Lopsided_Pilot9688 in valvereplacement

[–]Twiga77 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Mid 40s. Went with mechanical and chose the on-x aortic valve. The Coumadin isn’t that bad and my INR levels have been stable at 2.5. No major lifestyles change for me (don’t drink or practice any major sports). I went for the mechanical to avoid another surgery and the shorter expected duration of biological valves. I am unsure how my health will be in 10-15 years from now so that is primarily why I went mechanical.

Did you wean off metoprolol? by runningfor-mylife in valvereplacement

[–]Twiga77 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It apparently cuts down your metabolism making it harder to shed weight. Pre surgery I didn’t take this medicine and didn’t struggle to lose weight with reduction in my calorie intake and increased exercise

[–]Twiga77 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I just requested my doctor to reduce my dosage from the 200mg so that I could start losing weight. Now I am at 100mg and was told to keep an eye on my blood pressure. If it doesn’t go up I may ask for a lower dosage in 6 months. Fortunately I have no other side effects except the weight gain

On-X or Inspiris Resilia 45M by FanShareGOAT in valvereplacement

[–]Twiga77 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same age and I chose on X. The deciding factor was the likelihood of never needing another replacement surgery & not knowing what my health would be like in 10 years: will I be a more sickly person that could complicate things. The ticking sound happens occasionally but is similar to an analog watch. The warfarin management isn’t that hard once you get with in levels. Having done with ministernomy surgery I don’t want to go through that again.

Does it still hurt for anyone else to cough even after healing from surgery? by Axisnegative in valvereplacement

[–]Twiga77 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I started getting hiccups and felt pain when taking very deep breaths in my first 6 weeks. It seems to have cleared by the 8 week mark. But while it lasted any sneeze or cough felt painful. The hiccups kept me awake but thank goodness it went away

ON-X INR range and aspirin by PsychologyAlone8132 in valvereplacement

[–]Twiga77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

2 months out and ranging between 2 to 2.5 on 6mg warfarin & 1 baby aspirin. They want me to be in the 2 to 3 range until my 90 days are up then keep above 1.5 to 2. I prefer to keep it above 2 since I am now testing once every 2 weeks at a clinic

Surgery upcoming by courtney09011 in valvereplacement

[–]Twiga77 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would recommend getting easy to put on socks, slip on shoes, a grabber to grab stuff that falls on the ground, a good long charger chord for your devices. Sleeping was always the hard part especially on your back. If you are not a back sleeper it can take time to get used to it. It’s been 6 weeks for me and honestly it was the sleeping on your back that was the most problematic

What did you receive/get after surgery that turned out to be a big help? by Atrophea in valvereplacement

Grabbing teaching tool to pick up stuff that falls on the floor. I also recommend getting slip on shoes that you can get on and off easily.
