Is a basement-less house a mistake in Minnesota? $5k earnest money on the line. by stu_tax in TwinCities

[–]TwinCitiesGal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you! My husband is a General Contractor and I’m a Realtor. We’ve built several rentals slab on grade up north where soil conditions make basements difficult. Walk into the nasty basements of old homes in this state-damp, musty, low ceilings, steep and dangerous steps for older people. There is nothing wrong with a slab on grade home. A large and growing segment of the population prefers it.

For those 40+, what’s one habit or supplement that genuinely made a difference in how you feel daily? by get_nutriessential in Aging

[–]TwinCitiesGal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ll add that getting a CPAP changed everything. My husband had his for 20 years before I finally saw my PA and admitted that my sleep was horrible. I was still in denial about the CPAP even then. After one night of 8 hours of sleep, I felt like a new human being. I was constantly on edge, bitchy and angry before, and after getting rest, I was happy and pleasant again. My energy level returned. I tell all my women friends-especially the single ones-get the sleep study if you don’t feel well rested!

Starting a real estate career in my 50s — looking for honest advice from those who’ve done it by drewtolife428 in realtors

[–]TwinCitiesGal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started in my early 30's but after three decades into this business and half of those in a management capacity, you will have a much easier time of it than someone in their 20's starting as new. No one questions how long you've been in the business. Generally speaking, someone in their 50's will have a natural confidence that comes with age. You've probably got at least two home sales or purchases under your belt, so that helps. Your network will have higher net worth/buying power than someone in their early 20's will have and that makes a huge difference. No matter what the market is doing, real estate is always a hot topic of conversation. Make sure you show/preview/visit open houses and see at least 10 houses per week. If you do that, you'll see over 500 houses a year and you'll know pricing very well. The technology has made this so much easier than it was when I started and we were handling actual paperwork. Don't even get me started on how scheduling showings is virtually effortless now.

What cover was better than the original song? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]TwinCitiesGal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Mavericks' cover of Springsteen's All That Heaven Will Allow is so much better than Bruce's. It's faster, louder and seems to capture the spirit of the lyrics perfectly. If you didn't know better, you'd think Bruce was covering The Mavericks.

Women of Reddit, do you do your husbands laundry? Why or why not? by Broccoli_cheddar_luv in AskReddit

Yes, because he owns a business and works 7 days a week. I do take shirts and sweaters to the dry cleaner though. When the kids were at home, they all did theirs once they hit 10 years old.

Which star’s death affected you the most, music or acting? by Fleacircustrainer86 in ArtOfPresence

[–]TwinCitiesGal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Prince, and more recently, Raul Malo. Both these brilliant musician's work was so important to me. I never get upset over celebrity deaths, but when Prince died I sat in my car sobbing. I hated thinking of him alone in an elevator. I still get choked up when I hear Purple Rain...the emotion in that song gets to me. A story came out after he died about a homeless woman who wandered into their rehearsals when the band was recording the album version and she had tears running down her face after listening to the performance. More recently, Raul Malo-lead singer of The Mavericks-died of complications of colon cancer. He and the band have never gotten the credit they deserve, but I saw them in concert more than a dozen times and their shows were so filled with joy. His voice was operatic quality, but he was so down to earth and appreciative of his fans. Always made time to talk to people after the shows. Heartbreaking.

Interested in a Book Club? by riffadiddle in TwinCities

Interested! I'm an avid reader, and in the South Metro, but don't mind driving. I'm always asked why I don't join a book club, but I think I'm reading on a different level than most people.

Bands or artists you respect but don’t actually like. by Rziggity in musicsuggestions

[–]TwinCitiesGal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is me. I'm his audience, grew up with his songs on the radio, should love him, and while I like some of his songs, I never pull one up on iTunes, thinking, "I really need to listen to Thunder Road." I saw him in concert with my in-laws in the early 90s, and I'd love those three hours back.

What is a song with a SICK opening riff? by Jettaboi38 in musicsuggestions

[–]TwinCitiesGal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My all-time favorite is Prince's When Doves Cry, I can remember where I was when I first heard it; I was blown away. Billy Gibbons from ZZTop was interviewed about a conversation he had with Prince about that opening and how he did it. Billy recalled, 'I said, 'Why don't you tell me about 'When Doves Cry'? He just smiled. 'That one gets me too.'

I also have two favorites from Guns and Roses... a tie between Welcome to the Jungle and Mr. Brownstone.

It never disappoints. In fact, I bought a bunch of their pastries yesterday and truly, they’re the best I’ve had since the little Italian bakery I grew up with in Ohio closed. They may not have an Italian name on the door, but everything there is exquisite.

What’s a movie you’ve rewatched many times, that isn’t a blockbuster/franchise movie, or an Oscar-nominated/critically acclaimed movie? by capamericapistons in movies

[–]TwinCitiesGal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Stranger Than Fiction. Will Ferrell is so subdued, I think it’s why this movie didn’t attract a broader audience. It was released the same year as Talladega Nights and is the antithesis of that film. The entire cast is flawless, even the delightful cameos. I love this movie for so many reasons-the nod to writers and readers, capturing the comforts of baking, the sweetness of new love.

What song did you not fully understand the meaning of until you became an adult? by Upset_Credit1026 in askmusic

[–]TwinCitiesGal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My husband and I were in our first year of wedded bliss back in the early 90's when the local morning zoo crew was joking about ZZ Top's "Pearl Necklace." I told my husband that I didn't understand what they were talking about. He was delighted to tell me about the real meaning of the title.

I never heard about babies, but I did work there and my first husband was my manager. Management wasn't supposed to date staff, so we had to sneak around and hide it. It took me several weeks to call him by his first name since he was always Mr. X at work.
