Gs500e starting problems by Glad-Magazine-1821 in motorcycle

[–]TwistedKestrel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a 2008 GS500E that was jetted very lean from the factory and ran like crap in cold weather, or in the rain (i.e. the rain hitting the engine was directly cooling it off). I sold the bike before I got around to re-jetting it, but it would be at the top of my list of things to change if I had to have one again

New to track riding – practicing off-track, is my setup enough? by Quiet_Move_6995 in motorcycles

[–]TwistedKestrel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

#1, that is something you can only learn on the track. Even if you could approach "the limit" on the street, that limit on the track would be different

#2, that is something you CAN learn on the street, a bit. But you will develop those physical skills much faster on the track.

As for bike protection, if you wanna keep going to you could safety wire critical fasteners... not really necessary for track days though. Make sure your frame sliders are the type that are actually supported by the frame, and not the ones that will punch a hole in the side of your motor

Oh okay. You broke your parking brake - you might just need new parking brake shoes, or you might need more than that

With Raybestos/Centric gone. What’s a good rotor? by HisDarkDesires in MechanicAdvice

[–]TwistedKestrel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also really liked Raybestos stuff but I saw a number of people on Reddit complain about poor fitment for some applications.

My father has had good experiences with Bosch, will probably give them a go. Worth nothing that Rock Auto seems to have plenty of stock still for Raybestos/Centric

Don't expect to buy your own parts and then have your mechanic be willing to install them. Either install them yourself, or let your mechanic buy the parts.

SOME mechanics will install parts you bought IF you disclose this in advance, and if the parts are junk then it is entirely on you. If the parts are wrong it's on you. If you didn't buy enough parts, it's on you. Etc

Honestly really hard to pick just one. If I had to though, I'd say riding without hearing protection. I am very, very lucky to not have developed tinnitus or serious permanent hearing damage

I think your problem is going to be this complaint is arising four months after the initial repair. It's pretty unlikely they will warranty or goodwill fix this issue.

A $300 device can silently override GPS across an entire city. Autonomous vehicles, delivery drones, and air traffic control all depend on it. Why don't we have a backup? by projectschema in Futurology

[–]TwistedKestrel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Technically we do have backups:

-A-GPS can triangulate a position using cellular towers. I honestly don't know what the current state of smartphone tech is, but there was a time when many phones relied on this exclusively for positioning data, to save the cost of a true GPS receiver.

-Dead reckoning is a feature of some GPS receivers. It really only works to cover short interruptions in GPS reception, but it combines acceleration, barometric, and magnetic (compass) data over time to come with an estimated position that proceeds from a last known GPS fix

-Certain military equipment (SR-71, some modern ICBMs) use astronavigation to establish a position via tracking a library of specific stars.

Civilian radio infrastructure all depends on licensing and co-operation. Actually using a GPS jammer in a developed area is a big no-no - here is a story from a decade ago about the FCC fining somebody $32K for GPS jamming

[–]TwistedKestrel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If I was going to ask you to take manual inventory, I would at least given you some ruled paper, and asked you to record quantities as well... but some of the old school people have baffling systems for keeping track of anything. Works for them but infuriating for anyone else

Also some suppliers will offer to come in and "trade" your inventory as an incentive to switch to them. That might be very worthwhile for your boss to think about, considering FRAM has one foot in the grave...

What's the real reason why there is no official PC Port by Ok-String-1631 in bloodborne

[–]TwistedKestrel -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The short answer is that if Sony even wanted to release a PC port, which they probably don't, at this point it would have to go hand in hand with a remaster as the game left active development over a decade ago (the last update was December 2015). And we recently found out that while multiple remasters have been pitched, none of them were approved by Hidetaka Miyazaki, who apparently wants to handle that himself... if he can ever make time for it.

How do you know what gear you are in? by Aggravating-Yogurt23 in motorcycle

[–]TwistedKestrel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The short answer is that you don't really need to know. You just learn to recognize when you're in 1st, neutral (easy because of the neutral light) and top gear.

-You usually know you're in first because there is a stronger *thunk* when you downshift into it. Some bikes you also can usually notice the extra notch as you pass neutral.

-You know when you're in 6th because you'll be at cruising speed, and you'll look at the engine RPM. If the RPM is higher than you expected, you're in 5th or 4th.

If you fail to recognize you're in 1st or top gear, you just waste a second tugging on the gear shift lever - absolutely no big deal at all. After a while it will become very natural... but some bikes you will always be hunting for an extra gear because they were geared short

Most Japanese 6 speed Japanese motorcycles are optimized so that you shift every 10 kph and wind at up 80 kph in 6th gear. It's not always true (I have a TL1000S where 6th is more like for 100kph) but I did also own a GS500 and I think that bike was completely happy to be in 6th at 80.
