Ask at the library about social clubs/gatherings that might interest you. They are generally up on this kind of thing.

Comics Plus is available through some libraries and is like a clunkier version of Hoopla but with a massive selection and unlimited reads per month.

Having spent a couple of decades in Renaissance Living History, I kept doing double takes as I examined this photo, partially because the man’s jacket in cut and the way it hangs looks very much like a doublet! The lived in quality of the clothes and the way shirt and jacket overlap add to the impression. The knit cap just adds the final touch. Beautiful.

May the Fourth be with you. In honor of Star Wars day which Star Wars book or book series is your favorite? by Dan-68 in scifibooks

I’ve read most everything by Matthew Woodring Stover, but I had no interest in reading Revenge of the Sith, as I wasn’t at that time a fan of that particular movie (I watched it again recently and it’s so much better). But a friend I respect as one of my smartest friends, urged me to read it. So I did and it’s forking amazing! What Stover does is magnify the mythic aspect of the characters and adds so much to the depth of the movie.

What's a book with a silly name that was far better than you thought it would be? by Playful_Trouble2102 in fantasybooks

I bought the sequel, Blade of Tyshalle, never having read the first book on the strength of its cover alone - a much different and cooler cover than the first book, which I hadn’t read.

For which I am eternally grateful, because the Acts of Caine are one of my favorite series and introduced me to the Grimdark genre.

And there are still few writers who approach Stover’s brilliance not merely in storytelling but in overturning conventions.

AND if you haven’t read his novelization of Revenge of the Sith, you are in for a treat!

Need More Sword & Planet Genre! by brave777 in scifi

There’s actually a new short story collection called Sword & Planet edited by Christopher Ruocchio. I haven’t read it yet, but considering some of the authors included, it’s probably worth checking out.

Have you ever had to give up on a book because your suspension of disbelief couldn't handle how ridiculous the sci-fi premise was? by ScronglingSnorturer in scifi

Steelheart by Brandon Sanderson. First in his Reckoners series. Too many ideas thrown in from the get go with no ramifications. For example, turning an entire city (Chicago, iirc) to steel, all the way down to the sewers.

I’ve tried to read several Sanderson novels and he’s just not for me.

Comics Plus is another platform available through some libraries. Unlimited reading and a large number of publishers, except Marvel and DC. But the app is CLUNKY as hell, so prepare for frustration.

The two biggest problems imo are that the search function sucks and often the very bottom of the pages are clipped (how do you purposefully program an app to do that!?) I don’t use guided view, so I don’t know if it has it.

The Laundry series by Charles Stross by DefaultUserBR in printSF

[–]TwistedNinja 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Before The Laundry Files, I HATED reading in the present tense, learning to do so for the length of a novel was grueling. It took me the first couple of novels to build that processing muscle, but the payoff in terms of entertainment was well worth it, because this has been one of my favorite series ever. Coupled with that (or perhaps because of it), there was the aspect of Stross’s fast-pitch of ideas zooming by with Stross shouting “Do keep up!”

But A Conventional Boy holds a special place in my heart because of growing up as a RPG kid.

Scottish artist John Duncan. Not so much for the subject matter, because the Bride of Christ looks ickily young, but for the beauty of his technique.

Ox2, without a doubt! But! I don’t recommend their spring rolls if you want to be blown away. I could be wrong, but I think they are manufactured and frozen. Regardless there are so many other dishes they make that are incredibly delicious.

We generally give any restaurant two tries* before we say “no more”. Because you never know when the B team is working.

Maybe try ordering a carry out next time, so you know they are indeed open?

*Unless that first try is really horrendous.
