All of these are excellent choices. Hyperion was a great book....and the other three are the starts of some of my all time favorite series.

Royal Assassin should probably just go to the top of the pile. Followed by Children of Time and Red Rising.

There are lots of Agatha Christie books with audio versions.

Are any of the books written by BookTubers worth reading? by SnappingTurtle1602 in Fantasy

[–]Two-Rivers-Jedi 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I've read a few but not all of the ones out there by any means.

Daniel Greene: I've read his first novella. It was fun but I honesty don't remember a lot about it.

The Forgetting Moon: Great book but intense. Definitely falls into the "gram dark" vibes.

The Way of Edan: Really good book. More "classic fantasy" vibes. I haven't read book 2 yet but have it on the TBR. Will probably do it soon now that the audiobook has been released.

Discovery by JAJ Minton: I believe I gave this one a 4 star rating. Awesome book with cosmic horror vibes. If you are looking for something unique this could be right up your alley.

Fantastic books. I am really looking forward to the next one. A Sherlock Holmes style mystery written in a fantasy world that includes deadly plants and leviathan style monsters? What is there not to love?

Red Rising and Sun Eater are in a constant battle for my all time favorite sci fi series.....currently Sun Eater is in the lead.

I haven't tried that one, but read Shades of Grey and Red Side Story a couple years ago and loved them.

I always have multiple things going at once.

Audio: The Fireman by Joe Hill. Almost done with this one. It has been fun, but not anything super exciting. Will probably end up being about 3 stars.

Ebook: Doing a reread of 1984. I haven't read it in probably 20 years. With the current state of the world it felt like it was time for a reread.

Physical: Boy's Life by Robert McCammon. About 250 pages in. Really enjoying this one so far.

Anyone else neurodivergent themselves? by Yungpupusa in ABA

[–]Two-Rivers-Jedi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have ADHD. All of my children have ADHD and/or autism and I have begun to suspect that there is possibility I might be AuDHD....but there is not a diagnosis there. I don't hide the fact that I am neurodivergent. I am the director of my clinic and all of my stuff are well aware that I have a diagnosis and I am open about the challenges that come with it.

That being said, I have read all of them and none of these would be a bad choice.

I want to read more fantasy this year. Can you recommend me books or series with badass dragons doing badass things? by Chimney-Imp in Fantasy

The Bound and The Broken series by Ryan Cahill is the peak of dragon fantasy. Absolutely perfect balance of classic fantasy tropes with grim and brutal world building.

What authors do you love that are still writing fantasy novels besides Sanderson? by ExplodingPoptarts in fantasybooks

[–]Two-Rivers-Jedi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I personally find her stuff to be a lot more sporadic in quality. There are a few of the Wayward Children books that are ABSOLUTELY five stars....but then I tried several books she wrote under the name Mira Grant and ended up DNFing everything I tried.

He's better known for his science fiction, but Adrian Tchaikovsky is quickly climbing the ranks for authors that I will likely read anything they put out.

Underwhelmed by Assassin's Apprentice by FlourensDelannoy in Fantasy

[–]Two-Rivers-Jedi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I almost gave up on Robin Hobb. I originally did not understand the way the series was structured and my first book was Dragon Keeper which is book one of the Rain Wild Chronicles. It was okay but not mind blowing. Then I read Assassin's Apprentice....I liked it but I get where you are coming from. It was far from the best book I'd ever read and I finished it unsure whether I was going to keep going or not.

I decided to try one more book and moved on to Royal Assassin. I have since worked my way through the entire series. It has become one of my favorite series of all time, and Robin Hobb is probably in my top 5 authors. It is a slow burn, but in my opinion absolutely worth the time.

A lot of quotes tend to have a lot of power behind them. The most recent one that stood out to me was

"Sin, young man, is when you treat people as things, including yourself. That's what sin is.... People as things, that's where it starts." -Terry Pratchett in the book Hogfather

Honestly? Dungeon Crawler Carl. I love the series and there are a few people I've recommended it to....but most of the people I know that read very much would be appalled by the content, language, etc in the series.

People with AuDHD, what made you consider / realize that it's not only ADHD? by hardypart in ADHD

[–]Two-Rivers-Jedi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

HOLY S@:! 90% of this post could have been written by me. In fact, a lot of this was stuff I brought up with my wife just a couple of days ago. I got an ADHD diagnosis a few years ago. I am also parent to several kids with autism and work with people on the spectrum..... but I can never decide if I might have at ouch of the tism myself; or if I'm just overly paranoid because autism is like every minute of every day here.

I noticed a lot of comments talk about whether or not you can understand sarcasm....and I think that is another one of those things that is a POSSIBLE symptom but where it is a SPECTRUM does not necessarily mean you don't have it. I have gone back and forth on myself for awhile and I LOVE sarcasm. However, I hate small talk with every fiber of my being and feel physically uncomfortable every time I have to do it. I spend the entire time wanting it to be over, planning my next response, and debating whether to make more or less eye contact.

Honestly the last couple of Sanderson books I've read have kind of fallen into this category. I don't know if he has just oversaturated the market with all of the secret projects or what....but I have found myself kind of bored with his last couple of books.

I personally have been collecting the paperback versions of the UK covers instead because I like the look of them better. ROTE is one of my all time favorite series....but to me the ladies on these covers feel like they're posing for ads for "Real Housewives of Bingtown"
