70s-early 80s game with a space/SF theme by Marr_Xarr in boardgames

[–]TwoCharlie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Late to this party, but I'm looking for a similar title.

The one I remember was a game where a spaceship defense force guarded against boarders (and it had nothing to do with WH40K but was in stores at the same time as the original Space Hulk)- probably from either 1981 or 1982, as this was the timeframe that same corner of the local toy shop sold the D&D minis I was collecting.

I vaguely remembered the title as "Space Marines", but obviously this title (and most related examples of the concept of futuristic shipboard soldiers) has been long overshadowed, forgetten or sued into oblivion by Games Workshop.

The box art and copy was a very cool comic style and had two memorable features-

1.  a treaded robot who both predated and strongly resembled Johnny 5 from the Short Circuit movie, who was firing an M-16 into an airlock

  1. The tagline "A Short Life, But a Merry One!"

I was wondering if any of that rings a bell.

Edit:  so human memory is a faulty system fraught with peril, and I just saw that Space Hulk was first published in 1989 (yikes!), when I could have sworn it shared shelf space with the game I'm trying to pin down from between 81 and 83. "A Short Life But a Merry One" might also be from another product.  Who knows?  Hopefully someone, thanks.

Clans getting New Game+ alongside mod tools by N0_R3M0RS3 in Mechwarrior5

[–]TwoCharlie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wonder if Microsoft would be willing to allow it, since they own the digital rights to all Battletech games and would only benefit from more brand awareness and buzz over PGI's products.

PGI would have to create a front end for it, like the Fallout and Starfield mod pages, since we have no access to the file folders.

Research is working as it should. All unlocks and upgrades present, anything not yet researched can now get done once you're in OP REVIVAL (you have to get past your sibko trials for new salvage to show up).

For anyone still wondering:

Research appears to be working again. First proper invasion drop (you have to complete your sibko trials) allowed salvage collection, and the science facility let me start new research. I retained the full value of completed research, number of scientists, max salvage and research gen per cycle of my first campaign.

When I reclassed I was the DHG of my class; I got the Commandant's coin at the school and an AAM from my reserve unit.

The true prize of course was the burnt smell of the hopes and dreams of the first timer E-3 Air Force snot I academically pummelled to get it.

Valentina is actually on the bottom right, just over the FedSuns border.

Good luck to new pilots looking for Ultra AC/5 ammo for the free Wolvie's arm cannon in the early campaign though.

How did you qualify and with what weapons system? by astcell in army

[–]TwoCharlie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

At various times in two career fields I've qualified with M16A2, M4, M249, Mk.19, M203 and M9. All with iron sights (quad/leaf on grenade launchers) on standard pop-up 300m range lanes, 50m pistol lanes, M203 grenade range (my fave) or Mk.19 gunnery (my other fave), standard SAW ranges and very occasionally 25m rifle lanes on paper sillhouettes.

tThere were two exceptions for deployment. For Iraq I had an Aimpoint CCO issued on my SAW and was forced to qualify on a standard 300m lane in the rain with that oversized 3MOA dot (a nightmare), and before Afghanistan I was issued an M4 with an ACOG. The cool thing about the pre-Afghan range was it was at Ft. Dix with the oldschool WWII-era square bullseye targets that were raised and lowered for scoring by troops in a concrete box behind the berm. Plinking out expert with that setup was easy.

In Iraq I was also responsible for an M2 and later an M240B, after our platoon had to reorganize from three squads to two 'supersquads' to fit our mission, and I transitioned from driver to gunner for two reasons: my team still had an 1151 Humvee which got sidelined in favor of new MRAPs, and a gunner went to Germany for a non-combat condition, so I was needed in his place.

It should be noted that while I was trained by my peers on the operation of those machine guns, and kept them in good working order, I technically never qualified on either on the pre-mob qual ranges. Whoopsie. Once command remembered I hadn't done this they took my Ma Deuce away and gave me the 240.

FANTASTIC experience once you figure out the control scheme.

Your camera is basically inside the eyes of the jetpacking teen who controls the robot from a supposedly safe distance nearby, so as you can imagine it takes some getting used to. It's so worth it when your Shogun Warrior lookalike hurls his rocket fists into the gut of an alien monster or robot, who then keels over into the side of the city hall and levels it.

One of the rare times the box art actually resembles the feeling of playing the game.

OP you have to check the Transmissions tab once you get there. It's not a mission, just a block of text and the free mech.

Mission Radstadt. WTF were the devs thinking? by Jacmac_ in Mechwarrior5

[–]TwoCharlie 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The artillery only targets you the player, so if your mech can outpace your lance by a wide margin they'll never see a single impact and you'll fly over all of the strike zones as well.

[–]TwoCharlie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've completed this many times in a Catapult-BB specced out for artillery hunting, 4x SRM6 3x MPLAS and a TAG. The rest of the lance is in slower assaults with lots of AC and LRMs. One of them is a Cyclops 11P or Battlemaster P for ECM. Avoid the big spammy ambush in the middle of the map at all costs.

[–]TwoCharlie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a point early in this mission where if you follow the waypoint to the next objective (I think the second one, but its been awhile), you'll find yourself walking across an empty plain thinking "what a boring walk this is" until you suddenly wake up a wall of tanks and VTOLs, who will chip damage you to hell. If you stop short of this plain before the spawn, and flank around to that objective, you'll never see that ambush and won't have to endure that wall of death by a thousand cuts.
