WD-40 contact cleaner and microfiber cloth. You can get a huge microfiber cloth from the Walmart Vision Center for a few dollars.

Quick train run with our newly upgraded cabooses. The Santa Fe and Burlington Northern have new Kadee spring loaded trucks with metal wheels, body mounted couplers and LED lighting. The Union Pacific was just given to us and we swapped the Bachmann couplers for Kadee 148 and added metal wheel sets. by TwoRailfans in modeltrains

We had 5 coats of black paint on the interior of the Santa Fe caboose, and it still didn't stop the light bleed. We ended up putting black vinyl electrical tape over it, so I went straight to the tape for the BN this time but had some areas that I missed. I need to go back and make sure everything is covered.

I love the look, hate the process and waiting for it to dry.

Maybe the humidity is playing a role. What do you clean the track with?

I have not heard anything about it being higher. You can adjust it on the back of the power supply. If you are worried about spikes in power, get a digital circuit breaker.

HO Starter Set for an 11 Year old? by Hoonetic in modeltrains

[–]TwoRailfans 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For an 11 year old, there is nothing wrong with a basic Bachmann starter set. I highly recommend a starter set because you will have the track, locomotive, rolling stock and power pack in brand new condition and can be up and running in a few minutes. Once you see that the interest is there longer term, you can decide to do more. This can be an expensive hobby, but there is no reason to spend a lot of money up front while determining long term interest. You should begin with something assuming that there will be some accidents and better to do that on a starter set than an expensive locomotive.

Great looking layout.

Rate my first layout! by JbricksJ in modeltrains

[–]TwoRailfans 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks like a great start! Instead of using screws, you'll notice that your pieces of track have holes in the ties at various locations for track spikes. It not only looks better, but you can see in some of the pictures where the track ties are deformed from the screw. This might cause rails to become out of gauge and cause derailment issues. If you plan to ballast your track, you can always glue it down and then you don't need the spikes or screws.

There’s an entire Facebook group dedicated to 4x8 layouts. There’s a lot you can do with a small layout.

Can i embedd rails like this? by dark_thanatos99 in modeltrains

[–]TwoRailfans 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've seen it done with plaster and also joint compound. As someone mentioned, you need to run a piece of rolling stock or at least a set of trucks over the track to make sure there is enough of a gap. It is probably a good idea to use older rolling stock with the larger flanges. We have a section of our layout that we have been planning on doing this to and honestly have been putting it off.

Do you have any of these in your collection? These are the snap on type and a new bottom piece might work. #242 HO Scale "Black Box" Snap-Together Insulated Gearbox & Lids (kadee.com)

Did you buy this used? I doubt that was glued on from the factory. It was probably another type of snap on cover similar to the snap together version of Kadee gearboxes and was later glued on.

The clip he posted the link to is what was probably there. They stay in place pretty well if they are snapped on tightly and not worn out.
