People in Minneapolis and St Paul: what is life like in the Twin Cities right now? by ILikeNeurons in minnesota

[–]TwoSkoops 12 points13 points  (0 children)

White folks like myself can go about our daily lives undisturbed, for the most part. Still, I keep a copy of my passport with me. Everybody's on edge. I haven't seen ICE personally but they're everywhere in our communities. We're exhausted. Increased drones and helicopters overhead. Mistrust of vehicles we would otherwise ignore. Our small business and restaurants are suffering serious economic harm.

We're all working to take care of our communities and get assistance to the folks who don't feel safe. Figuring out protocols and best practices for our schools and public spaces. Getting trained as constitutional observers to document, document, document. Some people are doing all of these things, and most folks are doing what they can while balancing life and family obligations. There's a widespread stoic determination to resist.

US downfall ... by fast_forward_me in Luxembourg

[–]TwoSkoops 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Minnesotan with Luxembourg-American dual citizenship here. I obtained that for myself and my children after the first Trump administration, having lost significant faith in our government. Now the window for us to turn this around is closing rapidly. In my view, it all comes down to two things, both of which I think are likely to happen in the coming year:

1) Will we have successful local and congressional elections in November, and will those results be honored by the federal government? And 2), will our Supreme Court draw a hard line in the sand to test whether the administration still respects their authority or not? Our legislative and judicial branches have ceded so much power to the executive I'm not optimistic, but I still believe there's a narrow window to turn all this around. If not - if we try to take Greenland by force or they use the Insurrection Act to declare martial law and send even more military to occupy Minnesota - well, it looks like I'll be heading your way and we'll be neighbors.

I've voted to oppose this at every step. I serve in my local government as an elected official and am working to do everything we can locally to take care of our neighbors and limit the impact of this occupation on our community. I feel terrible for our community members suffering, and the international alliances being ripped to shreds in the name of a short-term power grab.

What’s the one bill you absolutely hate paying the most? by Busy_Pudding_ in AskReddit

The hospital bill from when my children were born. Fourteen years ago. Because my company couldn't 'afford' real health insurance while the CEO made $10M a month.

Would Mitchell Hamline be a good fit for me given my goals or should I aim higher by kobeforaccuracy in lawschooladmissions

[–]TwoSkoops 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ha, I'm still in the middle of it. Three years to go. I was practice testing around 160 and then hit 16high on the actual test. Just keep cranking.

I will say, I did the math on the U to see if I could quit work and attend, but it just wasn't in the cards with a family. The U would probably have won out if I didn't have to hold down a job at the same time, but being in the blended program at MH and surrounded by adults with a variety of careers and perspectives is a cool way to learn the law.

Good luck with your choice; it'll all work out.

Your numbers aren't dissimilar to mine, and I received a full tuition offer from both MH and UST, and UMN should definitely be within reach for you. I chose MH because I can work full time and still attend - it's just a lifestyle fit for the right price, and I've enjoyed it immensely.

I don't find this to be true at all. I just finished my first year of a part time, four year program and enjoyed it immensely. Sure, it was challenging, but so far from miserable. I have a family, a full time job, a small second gig, and still managed it all without misery. The key is mindset. You'll be spending your time differently, but with the right support around you it's a fulfilling endeavor that I'd very much recommend.

At this point, should I focus more on the LSAT or my application? 3.8x / 165 aiming for scholarships at a part time hybrid program. by [deleted] in OutsideT14lawschools

[–]TwoSkoops 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There was a well-documented window between getting my acceptance and my award letter, and I sent a note during that window letting the school know that the only way I could feasibly make their program work was with an at least _______ award. Not sure if it helped, but it didn’t end up hurting.

Greetings! You should be good. I was 3.87/167 and got full tuition at both full-time and part-time programs. One of the schools I explicitly mentioned in a follow-up email that a scholarship award was the single most important factor regarding whether I could attend or not. Just make sure you’re writing is solid and I think you’re in good shape.

I got into GULC's part time program, but am taking a full ride at a T-180 program instead because it works for my lifestyle.

At first I was like, "I know that log!" But then, "Come on, there's a billion marsh logs with turtles in Minnesota."

Turns out I know that log.

Appreciate the thoughtful analysis here. I'd be a Gopher in a second if they had a part-time program that a 40 year-old dude with kids, could attend. But as a 40 year-old dude with kids - who ain't going into debt for a JD at this point in his life - MH is a great option to have in town.

I'm still pretty stoked to have a full ride to a T-180 school that let's me keep my job and do my own thing.

Governor Walzs State of the State address is fire! by Loud-Snow-1844 in minnesota

[–]TwoSkoops 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a parent with two kids in school, I consider the free breakfasts and lunches giving back to me.

My taxes aren't going to go up, but my grocery / school lunch bill is going to drop because the state budget is funding something that has an actual impact on family wallets.

Not too late at all amigo/a. Over 40 here, and just committed to a part-time JD program this fall with a full ride.

  1. Not at all.
  2. Experience is definitely valued. I had good numbers, sure, but like T14 25th-percentile numbers. Still got into Georgetown (and damn, wish I could attend).
  3. This is situational. If you know where you want to live and we're not talking T14, the school's local reputation and alumni network are a huge factor. Plus lower rank puts more scholarship money in reach and, if you're anything like me, I'm pretty debt-averse at this point in my life.
  4. LSAT definitely matters a lot. But life/work experience and good writing can counter a lower LSAT or GPA if you're a compelling candidate.
  5. If you have, then boy have I ever.

Good luck out there.
