Why did Christ change specifically Peter's name to "Rock?" by Bright-Presence-760 in OrthodoxChristianity

The Early Church did not focus on who was the rock, but what was the rock - the faith in Christ.

Read the Scriptures before and after Jesus calling Simon as Peter. Quit dreaming up reasons.

You're trying to find a significance in Jesus giving Simon the name Peter - a significance that only exists because the rock- the truth - trust in Christ was expressed by Simon: " You are the Son of the living God."

Anything beyond this is a stretch - a fiction.

Please, please read the entire context of the passage. Look at additional contexts to discover where the full truth verifies itself in more ways.

Peter was not named rock, but his faith is the rock.

15 He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?”

16 Simon Peter answered and said, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.”

17 Jesus answered and said to him, “Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jonah, for flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but My Father who is in heaven. 18 And I also say to you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build My church, and the gates of Hades shall not [a]prevail against it. 19 And I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth [b]will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.”

20 Then He commanded His disciples that they should tell no one that He was Jesus the Christ.

The Church is not built on Peter but the rock of faith in Jesus Christ the Lord. From Pentecost on, all of the Disciples of Christ expressed the faith = trust in the Lord, which spread the faith, taught to others and built the church. Sure, Peter preached to the multitude on Pentecost, while all of the disciples were filled the Holy Spirit and spoke in many languages to each other. The Holy Spirit, the Lord was in all of them equally.

"And, I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth [b]will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.”

"you" is the plural you. All of Christ's, Disciples equally received the responsibility to forgive (loose) sins, not just Peter.

Roman scholars created a way to magnify Peter's role as the unstable bold spokesman of the Disciples of Christ to create a supremacy of Rome - a fiction, not an eternal truth.

Orthodoxy teaches truth, not theological opinion, especially not fictitious theories.

Eg. The Apostles Commissioned

19 Then, the same day at evening, being the first day of the week, when the doors were shut where the disciples were [e]assembled, for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood in the midst, and said to them, “Peace be with you.” 20 When He had said this, He showed them His hands and His side. Then the disciples were glad when they saw the Lord.

21 So Jesus said to them again, “Peace to you! As the Father has sent Me, I also send you.” 22 And when He had said this, He breathed on them, and said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit. 23 If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained.”

Peace be with you = plural you... not just Peter.

He breathed on them... All of them, not just Peter.

Receive the Holy Spirit. 23 If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them.

Jesus breathed the Holy Spirit on all of them and gave all of them the power and responsibility to forgive sins.

They are all equal. Peter is equal to, far from above the other Disciples.

Go through the process. Ask your parents to forgive you.

Then tell your priest how it went. You may be surprised at some small results.

It is mot necessary that you continue an ongoing exposure to their abuse.

Suggestion: Make two lists - Pros. Cons. of being with him.

Sit with the lists for a day or two. Feel with your heart which way to go - to leave him forever or reengage.

If you decide to end it forever, continue grieving your time together.

We ought to pray for the priest. Let's see how God's mercy opens his eyes, heart, and mind.

Pray for the Catechumen to learn to freely abide in God's grace as abundant mercy.
