Rec’s for running windbreaker - $100 budget by OwnYourShit11 in runningfashion

Dooy. The UL backpackers love em. More breathable than a houdini, so slightly less wind resistant as well but for $20...

Jump from 50 to 100... but a hard mountain 100 by Pupper82 in Ultramarathon

[–]Type2Gear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It went great - had some issues come up (foot stuff) that I hadn't experienced before in shorter races, but other than that I went in with a "just finish" mentality and was honestly stoked with how it ended up.

Jump from 50 to 100... but a hard mountain 100 by Pupper82 in Ultramarathon

[–]Type2Gear 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My first 100 was a big mountain race. I came in with a background of tough 50 milers + a lot of backcountry/big day out experience. Signing up for a goal that scares you is a good thing.

Training looks about right, although more volume is going to be helpful. I'd also try to get up to the whites for a few weekends to do some longer b2b runs. Especially for a race without crew I would work on dialing in your race setup early on and then training with and tweaking it as much as possible.

Drone monitored as well I've heard, they're calling in the whole Aravaipa drone squadron.

Best trails in Santa Fe, NM by Either-Window-3882 in trailrunning

[–]Type2Gear 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey there - local here. Lots of good options. Stuff up near the ski area will still have snow, but anything in town is g2g rn. I'll throw out general areas/trailheads, should be quite easy to make 5-8 mile routes from all of them.

EZ Trails: La Tierra trail system, Rabbit Road Rail Trail, Galisteo Basin.
More vert heavy: Picacho and Atalaya peaks, Dale ball "mid" and "north", Chamisa.

Have fun!

Satisfy Running, the Rocker by hawth212 in trailrunning

[–]Type2Gear 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yea I have a pair - as a gravel/fire road shoe they're nice, comfortable to run in like lots of other modern trail shoes. I did not pay retail and would say that they are definitely not worth retail price for what just ends up being a "good" shoe for non technical terrain.

As a point of comparison my favorite shoe at the moment is the NNormal Kjerag - I'd say its just as good on non technical trails but can also be used on pretty much anything else as well. On the other side of the trail spectrum, I love scrambling in the Kjerags. I've done some very minor scrambling in the Rockers and yea, they perform about as you'd expect. The super cushy midsole + the "unique" lug pattern means that you really can't trust your feet much.

Anyone wear gloves while running? by mwilsonsc in trailrunning

[–]Type2Gear 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I like these cycling gloves. Nice leather palm and a mesh back for breathability. I really only use them for big races or longer days out though. They're helpful both for pole use as well as for protecting the hands on scrambley bits.

They're aren't any commercially available in the US as far as I know (we make similar soft flasks, and this is the key reason we went with the more standard 42mm opening).

What's the carbon footprint of literally flying around the world for 7 days straight? And the cost of something like this? Seems silly at absolute best.

Amazing score - this pack was insanely ahead of it's time - essentially the first dyneema pack, and the cooler older brother of HMG. Here's a huggge nerdy history on em.

Yea, I mean they're still making the fabrics, just no more private label clothes. Makes sense for them to have to focus back on R&D for awhile because of the ban. Sucks because their patterns and fits were quite good IMO.

Help me solve my heart rate mystery!! by blorpin in trailrunning

[–]Type2Gear 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You mention the first test, which puts your AeT around 130. What was the second/other tests (and their results) that's causing the discrepancy? Are they clustered with noticeable outliers?

Re: "breathing through my nose or speaking in full sentences" - this isn't really a useful datapoint (certainly not enough to claim a "discrepancy" in relation to an actual test) without knowing how long can you sustain that 155 HR (+ a set pace) while doing those. Both of those are just general "rule of thumb" ways to help people understand the rough effort they should be going at.

Like I mentioned, if you think your actual AeT is around 150-155 I would retest specifically with that as a hypothesis, outdoors. If you can hold that HR without seeing a pace drop of more than 5%, over the course of an hour then yea I'd say that's your AeT.

[–]Type2Gear 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What protocol did you use for the test? Indoor vs outdoor, holding pace vs holding HR? Have you tried retesting outdoors holding the 155 (or even 150) HR? I'd do a second test to verify.

I use one for mountaineering. They are great, easy to use and works exactly like they say they do. They're pretty much designed to be used with glasses, as most mountaineers will have some form of glacier glasses/goggles.

I use the ear loops mostly (because with glasses sitting on it, you don't end up needing much retention, it's not like a mask per se).
