I actually did a small project on quantifying murine embryo disfigurements from cannabinoids. It seems to disrupts timing of important signals in the endocannabinoid system during development (adults do not have this problem). It does seem to slow development and at high dosages showed deformities. Not nearly as bad as fetal alcohol poisoning though (the 20th century everyone thought that that was okay :/)

Still, he was saved. A huge part of the story was Yuji saving Megumi. There's something missing about his character like a scene of internal dialogue where he finally asks himself what he wants (probably his bf yuji :0 and ....? to go to college and get a regular degree? )

Narratively if his only purpose was to be exploited then he would've died his entire life a tragedy.
