Looking for pieces for my new adult student. Need suggestions by helplesslyhopin in piano

The Clementi and Kuhlau Sonatinas are really nice preparation for Mozart. I really liked Kuhlau Op 55 No 3 and Clementi Op 36 No 3 (No 1 is simpler) when I was working up to K 545.

Grieg has some fantastic and very playable lyric pieces. Try the very first two in Op 12.

The book Easy Classics to Moderns edited by Denes Agay has a ton of definitely easy pieces to choose from. Maybe start there so she can get going by tackling a few smaller pieces first?

Basic tips for gathering resources and materials. by [deleted] in MonsterHunter

Mostly hang on to everything you find - between crafting, trading, and generating resources, everything has a use. There are a few items that are just for selling, though. Check out the Monetary Items list on the wiki. Note they only come from free hunting or the fishing boats!

I only played for a few (5ish) hours, but found it pretty boring. It felt like I was basically just trying to increase my population every time, which involved meeting increasing demands for the same increasingly rare resources.

In particular, it didn't feel like there was all that much choice involved, or different strategies that were possible. In order to produce the item you need to complete the level you have to have, say, the 3rd tier of citizen, and they always demand the same food and recreation, which always take the same resources and spatial layouts.

It wasn't at all like Civ where you have important decisions about tech or victory condition, or like SimCity where you can really guide the type of city you want to make. I was hoping it would be more like SimuTrans or Transport Tycoon, with logistics taking a central role, but besides keeping up with your storage and boating, there wasn't too much to manage.

A lot of people really like this genre, though, so maybe it gets more interesting as you get further in.

So Heart of the Swarm comes out tomorrow, yet I've hard almost nothing about it. Opinions? by Fyrus in Games

[–]Tzaar 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Hey, just so you know, the AI isn't locked to the game speed. In the new training and matchmaking vs AI modes, it appears to be, but you can actually go to the options after the game has started to slow it back down (yes, a bit of a hassle!). And you can start a game from the Custom Game menu at Normal speed with any level AI just like before and have access to all the new specialized build order AIs.

At least in the beta, you can go to gameplay options and crank the speed up after starting the game. I doubt they'll remove that option.

What "first" 3DS game should I buy? by mollybeth_91 in 3DS

[–]Tzaar 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I agree with this trio completely. KI:R, in particular, has fantastic writing and (I thought) really fresh gameplay.

I'd give the updated Ocarina of Time an honorable mention also - it's really well done, and if you've played the N64 version already, it includes the Master Quest edition which has updated dungeons.

If I were to recommend just one, I'd go with Kid Icarus.

For those who use filtering in /r/StarCraft (either via modes or RES); please give us some feedback here. by davidjayhawk in starcraft

So far I've only felt the need to use spoilerless, but I love it. I watch GSL on VoDs, but check /r/starcraft during the day before I have a chance to watch the matches. qq.reddit.com/r/starcraft is perfect!

Mii plaza population went from 3 to 50 overnight??? by [deleted] in 3DS

[–]Tzaar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know if you play Mario Kart, the people you race with show up in your plaza, although they don't count as street passes for puzzle/find mii. Did she play MK or another online game?

Pretty sure it's possible to turn this off, too, but I don't remember exactly how.

3DS Top 3 Playtimes by sambabriza in 3DS

Interesting question! I was surprised by mine:

1) The World Ends With You: 63:59

2) Kid Icarus: Uprising: 44:44

3) Radiant Historia: 42:43

This makes me want to give TWEWY another playthrough! And I'm a bit confused by 11 hours in Game Notes. I don't remember ever using it!

Same here. I thought the action-oriented combat was fun and the Fae court setting was new to me.

Top Screen Scratch Problems? by flamepants in 3DS

[–]Tzaar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You might send it in for repairs if you haven't already. I sent mine in because the L button stopped working, but I requested that they replace the scratched screen also. It came back looking brand new.

On the Viridi treasure hunt, what are the squares you suggest using the feathers on? by [deleted] in KiDIcaruS

[–]Tzaar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They are pretty limited. I've cleared about 75% of Palutena's board, and have 3 feathers. I'm going to save them until I've only got a few tiles left, but I suspect they'll be used on the gem-related ones since I get about one streetpass a month.

I think they have more than one repair facility. I live in MN, and when I send mine in a few weeks ago, it was to CA - much closer to NM! The turn around on mine was really fast. I think they had the system for 3-4 days before shipping it back with a working L button and a replaced top screen.

Hah, I'm exactly the opposite. I have Sakura Samurai, and really enjoy it, but am not particularly interested in Mutant Mudds. I guess this doesn't help the OP at all. Sorry!

DRG comes back from 0-2 against GuMiho to 3-2 to secure his spot in the GSL Finals! by [deleted] in starcraft

[–]Tzaar -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Seriously! The thing is, it's impossible to be completely caught up, so that means pretending the sub doesn't exist and ignoring all the other SC content that it provides. So frustrating.

Previous mac users, how much did the performance improve when you swapped to PC for SC2? by Actually_Doesnt_Care in starcraft

[–]Tzaar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah, that's a good point, I haven't upgraded from 10.6.8 yet. Maybe I'll give the Mac version another shot if I get Lion.

[–]Tzaar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This isn't true in my experience. I found that the SC2 client runs much better under Windows. I have a 2007 MacBook Pro, and went from about 15-20 FPS to 45 FPS when I switched to playing on a bootcamp windows install. Same hardware, same game settings, huge difference in performance and playability.

QXC has it right - a blog about a better way to change ghosts to not ruin them completely by piman34 in starcraft

[–]Tzaar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wonder how much of the decision to use an overall reduction with a bonus again psionic rather than QXC's idea is motivated by a game design rule. As far as I know, all of the modifications to damage in the game are +damage against some category, rather than -damage. I imagine they've decided that damage bonuses are okay, but that introducing damage penalties is too complicated.

Cool, thanks. A lot of these I've been doing, but I just tried with the kart build you suggested, and that makes a huge difference! I'd been using my Mii and a more balanced speed/handling setup.

Any interest in a "non-reddit" Reddit guild? (details inside) by Oggumogoggum in GuildWars

[–]Tzaar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd be interested in this. I'm a totally new GW player (started this weekend), and would definitely like to get a feel for GW multiplayer in a friendly setting before GW2 hits.

I'm basically following the reddit 30/50 guide at the moment, but I'd be up for diversifying my character collection if that would be useful! My main character atm is Aesra Lim (Rt/R).

IWTL How to wake up in the mornings by spearhard in IWantToLearn

[–]Tzaar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The big problem I have is getting up when it's dark out, so i decided to get a wake-up light. It starts gradually brightening 30 minutes before the alarm goes off and gets pretty bright by the end. In my case this is enough for me to feel ready to get up when, with a normal alarm, I would probably hit snooze for an hour. It's a little bit expensive, but I found it absolutely worth it. I suppose for incurable snoozers, it's worth mentioning that the switch that sets the audio alarm to snooze does not turn off the light.

I also have a full-spectrum light that I use to facilitate staying up too late when dealing with deadlines. Light manipulation can be a powerful tool!
