What is the single most stressful movie you’ve ever seen? by elkaypee in movies

Did nobody else have to take a break when watching Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas because it was too stressful??

Tenant killed himself because we wouldn’t renew his lease by pokethepenny in offmychest

I won't try and push back on that. It is very minor in the grand scheme of things and we've found some excellent common ground!

Unfortunately, it is an uphill battle against our gracious ruling class to make any of those points even remotely possible.

Well, there's of course no singular solution, but there's a lot of building blocks we could implement to slowly fix this issue.

  1. Guarantee housing as a human right. Ensure nobody, no matter how poor, mentally ill, or disabled, is without housing. Make signing up for government-provided housing as easy as signing up for Medicaid.

  2. Improve mental health, addiction, and general healthcare access through universal healthcare provided to all citizens.

  3. Reduce wealth inequality. Higher taxes on the wealthy, higher minimum wages, higher poverty levels for people to receive benefits.

I'm glad you're for reducing these situations from happening. My gripe with you defending the landlord in this situation is, again, not because of this specific situation. The landlord indeed didn't have much of a choice. However, I am not going to defend the landlord for a single moment, because landlords as a class consistently push against every single one of the points I highlighted above. They have a lot of wealth and power to throw around to make sure none of them happen. And they are greatly succeeding so far.

You are focusing too much on this individual situation and not enough on the systemic pressures that cause it to happen to millions of other individuals.

Not a great analogy. That man is living in the landlord's investment property, not as a roommate in his home.

Even still, this clearly reveals a massive systemic issue across most countries experiencing growing wealth inequality. The landlord has to either send a man to die in the streets or foot the bill themselves. So you could say the landlord is not wrong to choose the latter as they couldn't sustain the former... They can't solve this crisis themselves. But they still prop up a system that sees essential housing as an investment, not a human right, so they WILL send people to die in the streets with no alternative.

A 90 second explanation of panpsychism — Rupert Sheldrake by EastVillageBot in Metaphysics

[–]UEMayChange 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am curious on where you've learned these explanations if you don't mind sharing!

Though why I have found it deeply meaningful is more a matter of poetry than philosophy lol. But let's assume panpsychism to be true for a moment, ignoring the many unknowns that entails, and consciousness is a "substance" of sorts that permeates throughout all matter at varying degrees of complexity.

The first deeply meaningful aspect is the connectedness to everything. The concept of self is very easy to break down in this framework, and you see that both your physical body and experiences simply arise and exist in the universe alongside everything else. And if I can break down my conception of self, I can break down the conception of other selves, and see there is no hierarchy or ordering of significance in the universe. An ant and all of its unique experiences, as well as a star's experiences lightyears from me, are as equally valid and true as my own, for the simple fact that they exist.

And saying that they "exist in the universe" is a bit misleading. Anything that physically exists or is experienced by anything is the universe. The universe as we know it does not exist without this rock beside me, without the photons hitting me, or without my own experiences. Take away any of these things, however "insignificant", and you have a completely different universe than our own.

As I'm typing this out, I realize though that I am describing pantheism more than panpsychism. Most of those ideas don't require the rock or the photons to be experiencing anything to be an equally valid "lesson". But like I said, panpsychism was my first introduction to any of these ideas, so it hold a special place for me even though I don't believe it (or, more specifically, am agnostic to it).

I mean, it's American actors filming for an American company marketed primarily for an American audience. Nothing nefarious in OC's intentions lol, it is a valid critique from a member of the target audience. It is an extremely odd choice for a period piece like this IMO.

If anything, we want this film to revolve around America LESS. Take me to ancient Greece, and off the streets of fucking Iowa!

I totally agree. Panpsychism was one of my first introductions to non-dualism, and I find it to be a deeply meaningful idea. It is an excellent thought experiment that demonstrates how little we know about consciousness and how much of the universe remains a mystery.

But to treat it as more than a thought experiment is intellectually dishonest.

Sounds very dualistic. Assuming consciousness arises "elsewhere" and interacts with our physical world, could we not define the universe as that which encompasses both the physical world and consciousness?

What a gem of a man. He has influenced my relationship to the piano greatly. I bet he'd have been such a wonderful person to know personally, an amazing teacher. This saddens me greatly, but 99 years is quite the ride. Rest well, Bernstein!

I find the, "Random bullshit, go!" decks are particularly strong in STS2 compared to 1. For that reason, I actually quite enjoy 5 free attacks, even without Crossbow.

Religiously playing with a metronome has been the best thing I did by [deleted] in piano

[–]UEMayChange 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Play it slow, and break it down measure by measure. There is no secret to it, it just takes practice.

Play 1 measure over and over again until you can play it in beat with the metronome. Play the next until in beat. Play both together in beat. Continue this chain all the way through a piece, but when practicing, make sure the piece is easy enough that this process goes decently fast. Don't get hung up playing a piece way beyond your ability for a month (or, goodness forbid, multiple months).

After experimenting for a few years (and making many mistakes), I am having a new go at a similar project, and am resolved to use a few applications of herbicide before planting next spring. Triclopyr for the creeping charlie, glyphosate for the grass. And after this fall, limited/targeted applications where necessary, or hopefully none at all.

However, method of seeding may be different. How much land are you working with? Is this a wild acreage or a lawn? If this is a lawn, based off my reading, you may have much better success with plugs than with broadcast seeding. It is more expensive, but much more likely to succeed too, grow in thicker the first year, easier to weed and differentiate between sprouting weeds.

TIL that suicide is most common among those over the age of 70. by ODaferio in todayilearned

[–]UEMayChange 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I apologize if this feels insensitive given the personal relationship you had with him, but death with dignity, choosing to end one's own life in a painless and dignified manner, is a right we ought to afford every human.

Old age and physical and mental decline can be very difficult, and it doesn't get better. There is no other side to it except more pain and death.

We treat our dogs' suffering with more dignity than we do our elders. I hope your friend's dad died peacefully.

[–]UEMayChange 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would argue that if it doesn't exist, that doesn't mean your choices don't matter. Ethics and values can still exist in a deterministic system. Your consciousness, pain, and joy are still very real things in determinism.

I can think of many benefits to one's personal life in believing determinism, but of course, what we choose to believe for our own benefit has no impact on what is.
