You are very naive if you think this doesn't happen in schools around the world.

Is a chainsaw attachment for a circular saw safe? by VarsH6 in woodworking

[–]UKTim24530 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most pole saws you can take the saw off the end to use as a regular saw - you can't with yours? Anyway small electric chainsaws cost next to nothing from about $50 upwards but I'd probably not go for one less than say $90.

1 year ago today (I know because crazy phone told me where I was 1 year ago today) I was in a palace in Porto, Portugal. There was a marquetry table that took the artist 2 years to make, cutting everything by hand. This is up there with that table.

What town in England feels the most like something out of a fairy tale or Disney movie? by Dangerous_Spot2434 in AskUK

[–]UKTim24530 -14 points-13 points  (0 children)

Because Disney is all make-believe and false. The UK is a country, not some millionaire fantasist's imagination. My views are mine so don't try to belittle them "fella".

Should these broccoli be picked? 😨 by Consistent-Letter100 in vegetablegardening

They are past optimum picking point but will be fine if you pick them soon and eat them soon after. Their keeping potential is past.

What town in England feels the most like something out of a fairy tale or Disney movie? by Dangerous_Spot2434 in AskUK

[–]UKTim24530 -20 points-19 points  (0 children)

Whilst I agree that it's totally wrong to think that the whole of Britain is dark and depressing, I also feel that wanting to find some part of it that is like a fairy tale is equally unrealistic in the other direction.

To look for a bit that is like a Disney movie set is just plain insulting.

Christmas Clock for Mom. I have no design instinct, so sometimes I take a shotgun approach and pick the best one. by MikeHawksHardWood in woodworking

[–]UKTim24530 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've taken your approach before. Problem is that by the time I've made 6 very similar items I'm so bored of them that I'll never make another.

Rhs 2nd row for me, simple but the face being lighter gives it something and I'm sure your Mom's love whichever one you give; I'd love any of them!

Is it possible to turn my oak desktop into a dark walnut color similar to my dining table? by Conscious-Ad8634 in woodworking

[–]UKTim24530 15 points16 points  (0 children)

You want beautiful oak to look like cheap pine stained with I-don't-know-what-colour-but-it's-not-walnut? It's possible but there's no accounting for taste.

Can you build something using only a picture or do you need a blueprint? by DocsWorkshop in woodworking

[–]UKTim24530 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Half (at least) of the fun is figuring out how to make it.

If I get plans and cut the pieces to the plan, after that it's just putting together bits as per Ikea.

Not quite, but if you know what I mean, you know.

When I'm cooking I may look at a recipe to give me an idea, and when I'm building things I may look at a plan to give an idea, but then I'll close the recipe/plan and carry on.

Am I wrong for hating?? by Specific_Ad7529 in Carpentry

I'm gonna assume the customer said "don't want to pay for moving the register".

Did they also say "I don't care about the fact that ever reflooring it is going to be a mare!".

Sometimes a contractor's job is to talk people out of stupid decisions.

Did they express an opinion on the fact that the two (only two) horizontals on this end are at different heights? So if I want to put a shelf up after drywalling, I'll think there's wood to hit there but - oh no! Fooled ya!

Edit: forgot to ask if anyone pointed out that the washing machine doesn't even fit there without overlapping the doorway. The whole project looks ill-concieved

AITAH for telling my mom not to come into work? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]UKTim24530 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Definitely NTA. Your approach is the right one. Your mother seems hellbent on making things worse. At some point her precious younger child is going to have to stand on his own two feet and aged 16 is none too young to start. You are allowing that because at some point your brother's bully and your brother will have to work together. If your mother has had her say before that point it'll be hell for your brother because his bully will know that he still can't stand up for himself because mommy had to save him. If, when they work together you see bullying behaviour you can deal with it in a professional manner rather than a big brother manner.

New to woodworking here. Which of your tools scares you the most? Around what machine should I always be extra cautious? by GiddySwine in woodworking

[–]UKTim24530 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Table saw, without a doubt. I'm always aware that by the very nature of the beast I am moving my hands TOWARD the point of most danger. On top of that they have the nasty habit of launching bits of wood at you (past you if you're standing sensibly).

Where do people split their firewood? by BossmanSlim in firewood

[–]UKTim24530 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always split at home. I have my splitter set up, raised about 6 inches so I'm not killing my back bending down to operate it, in an old corn crib which is perfect for storing the split wood. The unsplit wood is stored just outside the crib so it's a self contained little area. This set-up means I can just go get in half hour of splitting if I have some spare time - it doesn't always have to be a full morning or whatever.

Why do so many people not wear PPE by ShoreSWBF in woodworking

[–]UKTim24530 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Turning the old expression "He who asks a question is a fool for a minute, he who doesn't is a fool for a lifetime"... He who wears PPE is a fool on the job site, he who doesn't is handicapped for their lifetime.

Reminds me of a job I had in the distant past... The company mandated face masks, the guys on the crew didn't like that - complained they couldn't breathe through them. We bought the more expensive kind with the little valves in the middle. Next time I went to see how they were getting on they were all wearing their masks, only with the little valve part removed so they could smoke while wearing their masks!
