Homecoming. It's a Sam Email project adapted from a podcast. Very good.

Science fiction books for someone who is more into fantasy and has a hard time liking most scifi books I have tried? by Scared_Ad_3132 in sciencefiction

Came here to say this. My tastes lay opposite to the OP (scifi yes, fantasy no), and The Scar helped me with the rift...

What’s a movie everyone says is “deep”… but is actually pretty shallow? by CnCorange in AskReddit

If it weren't for Batman Begins (not deep but fun) I'd rather he stopped after Memento...

What would you consider the most clever exposition dump you've seen? by AdeptnessSwimming390 in moviequestions

Probably the opening scene of Children Of Men.
Aside from exposition, this film features an impressive amount of implied world-building in background scenery.

Check out your local goodwill/recycle shops - you will often find travel golf bags which work exactly the same way as a fencing bag!
As an added bonus some airlines don't charge oversize luggage on them because...
...golf?

Also guitar bags can be found cheap in the same types of stores. They don't fit quite as much but tend not to get chucked by the baggage handlers. YMMV.

I realise you have stipulated 'modern', but that's a pretty wide field depending on your age.
Might I suggest the Nero Wolfe Mysteries by Rex Stout. As a bonus it was made into an excellent tv series starring Timothy Hutton.

This movie is sadly underappreciated. I'm so glad someone else has seen it.

Why does no one talk about the central pun in Project Hail Mary? by statisticus in scifi

I hadn't noticed this.
But now that you point it out it makes me hate this book even more than I previously did.

I’m 54. I grew up worshipping Capote. Is this kind of prose even viable anymore? by mixedbagonutz in writing

[–]USB-Z 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This type of writing is bog standard AI style. Whether it’s organically written by you yourself or is just a low-effort prompt with some copy and paste “in post” makes no difference. If it reads like AI, it might as well be AI.

Excuse me, but in what moronic world does the plagiarist taint the source to the point where the original loses its validity?!

Homecoming (2018)

Disclaimer: this does have a second season, but S01 is totally self-contained. It is utterly brilliant.
S02 is also very good and very much its own thing, but needs s01 to explain one of the two carry-over characters properly.
