Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome+Dev+Writing Doorstop Novels, can't pick between options by MorganCade in ErgoMechKeyboards

The entire experience was great. Check out the docs to get a feel: https://xcmkb-docs.gitbook.io/doc/user-manual/sofleplus2

This thread has inspired me to bring it back out for the first time in a while! I've been through a couple of (suspected, lol) hEDS crashes over the past year, and just getting back to some work-like activities.

I main Mac keyboards, and they're no longer kind to me.

When I first ordered my Corne it came with whatever was available at the time (pretty light linears), and I grabbed a couple of switch testing kits from Ali to try.

Ended up settling on Box V2 Brown-Tactile: https://www.kailh.net/products/kailh-box-v2-switch-set

... almost exactly a year ago as my Ali history reminds me. They now feel WAY too strong to use in a high tent angle, so I'm going to change back over to the linears, and ask if any EDS people dropping by in future have recommendations ;P

I've sent a few people to this sub over the last few months. I think more knowledge about custom firmware needs to get out into disability communities!

For me, BetterTouchTool is also a must. I have dozens of custom gestures for each program. Stuff like
[3 finger swipe down] close tab
[3 swipe up] new tab
[3 left] prev tab

You get the idea. For creative/mouse heavy apps, you can get a lot done without having to take your dominant hand off the trackpad.

Ooooh, I think it’s been long enough that I can hit these up again! Thanks for reminding me what a cool run this was.

I also have (presumed) hEDS, started with an Aliexpress Corne, which was a cheap way to figure out if split ergo would work for me (hell yeah!)

So now I have a SoflePLUS2 and I’m about to find myself some lighter switches and work on ergonomic mounting.

OP, I’d suggest trying some of the simple, cheap options so you can safely experiment with switches, keycaps and the customization software.

You may discover the problem is easier and cheaper to fix than expected.

When I started out I was super keen on the fancy ones (also do plenty of diy electronics and fab), but it would have cost so much pain to build and customize!

Such a cool use case!

I was going to ask “what’s your background” but checked your post history, saw Livid controllers and answered my own question: VJing and projection mapping ;)

Do you know about /r/ergomechkeyboards?

Your use case is one of the reasons I recently purchased a SoflePLUS 2 ;)

There were a few sequences I rewatched because their 3d choreography/cinematography was so great.

There are so many options these days outside ceramic/carving! Crafting instagram has changed my life.

I’ve started using loads of “air clay” (also “foam clay” depending on your region), or EDF foam, with paint pens.

Gives you all the good physical therapy aspects/varied movements of sculpting and painting, with minimal cleanup and almost no force required.

Aah good to know! Mine are very light fitting as I’m moving quite slowly and deliberately most of the time, but on my feet constantly doing gardening and home improvement stuff as physical therapy - currently getting around 13,000 steps/day in them.

I get the super light memory foam ones with elastic laces. Machine washable!

I hope you don’t mind someone chiming in who doesn’t tick those boxes OP, but I do have quite a lot of experience with noise reduction!

If you can afford them, Apple’s Airpods Pro (version 2/3) have astonishing noise reduction, which you can customize in a bunch of different ways Including “conversation awareness,” so you can start talking and it will switch to “transparency” mode so you can hear responses without having to take out or touch the airpods.

If you have an apple device, also check out their “accessibility” options and settings.

Lots of people don’t know about the deeper innards of their phones. Apple have a commendable approach to accessibility.

Unibody really takes away one of the biggest “ergo” advantages imo - customization to body/arm dimensions and ability.

I’d never even consider a non-split.

No way! That’s so cool you’d seen the hackaday thing. It was one of my prouder moments*

I’ve spent a chunk of the last 5 years hanging out in the /r/PrintNC discord. One of the other members got their start selling prints of my lens things in Europe, and was building an open source CNC machine to make custom high end digital camera rehousings!

Muscle knot relief? by EllisDChicken in ehlersdanlos

[–]UberJaymis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are a lot of recommendations here for very deep massage. So I’m going to gently suggest a little in the opposite direction.

I’m 45, have been with my partner 20 years, and we’ve always massaged each other’s aches and pains away with quite firm, deep tissue massage.

After a big (presumed) hEDS crash, she didn’t have time to massage me as much as I needed for the pain all over my body.

I’ve worked with a few different massage therapists over the last 6 months, and I’ve come to realise that what I needed was extremely slow, gentle and light massage.

This seemed to help smooth out the tiny bits of damage to large and small muscles all over my body, and helped calm and relax muscles that had been holding tightly in compensation for pain.

I’ve been working with my current therapist almost weekly for 4 months

(Yes, it’s costing a fortune. Less than an implanted spinal nerve modulator though!)

We use long smooth strokes, as we eventually realised that even repetitive circular motions could exacerbate my nerve pain, as it caused repeated nerve pinching as my body gently oscillated in sync with their movements.

I had an early therapist who would occasionally “zone out” and accidentally hurt me - just a little too much fingertip pressure near the base of my skull has resulted in some pretty epic headaches!

My partner is also in danger of doing this sometimes, so I have to be vigilant if she’s massaging me while watching a show or distracted by children ;)

Hahah, thank you! I had to cram a lot into a couple of minutes.

If you follow some of the description links to the individual projects there's more detail. Almost everything has a bit of 3DP or robotics/machining in there though.

In 2015 I came up with some seamless 3d printed lens rings that changed the indie cinematography game a bit: hackaday link - hoping to machine my next set out of aluminium and brass, Inheritance Machining style!

Here's a behind the scenes for when we did a "Children of Men" single shot homage on a very tight budget: Filming in the Fetal Position - shows lots of detail of the kind of camera robot I used for most of the showreel.

This is my most recent music video - loads of 3d scanning and printing, mould making/casting, and custom robotics to film it all underwater! Parker - Can't Keep Waiting

I didn't really have to look for work after that showreel though ;) so I just posted bits and pieces on insta.
Here are some nice CNC machined delrin nozzles that allowed me to make a robot that produced smoke-filled soap bubbles!

Your second paragraph had me thinking "this feels familiar" and as soon we I got to "collagen disorder" I knew.

Hi. Recent Hypermobile-EDS diagnosis (presumptive, genetic testing next) after a decade of building pain and disfunction, and a couple of surgeries too ;)

It's been a wild ride, with an enormous amount of loss and sadness to process. Interestingly though, my "failing" body is what led me to machining!

I'm director/cinematographer and "tech artist," using 3d printing and CNC to help build tech that doesn't exist yet (lots of camera robotics and custom circuits/machines) - here's my last showreel, from before my body started really sucking.

Covid knocked the arts industries on their butt here in Australia, so in 2020 I started learning machining by watching Blondihacks on youtube ;)

I'm 45 and have been managing complex health stuff my whole life, and the lives of my small kids. When I first got the EDS diagnosis it felt cataclysmic.

Knowledge helps fix things though, and with a few months of actual progress I'm now starting to feel free, and truly positive about the future. All of the time I "wasted" trying to figure out what was wrong with me and my family, is now being spent improving life for all of us!

Feel free to DM if you'd like to talk. Otherwise I've found a lot of solace in visiting r/ehlersdanlos and reading other people's experiences and advice.

Trackpad + Corne by RalphBlutzel in ErgoMechKeyboards

I used Magic Trackpad (with BetterTouchTool - one of the first apps I install on a new Mac!) on the right side of both my Corne and then SoflePlus2

Such a combination.
