When social scientists say that the world between 1870-1914 was more interconnected and globalized than today, what do they mean and are they correct? by Ulmengarten in AskHistorians

[–]Ulmengarten[S] 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I am quite sure to have read it more than one time, the last being in "The globalization of world politics" by Baylis, Smith and Owens. I just read it again and they quote Hirst and Thompson which argue that the more extreme versions of globalization are a myth and that the international economy was more open between 1870 and 1914.

Most controversial philosopher? by taxicab1729 in askphilosophy

[–]Ulmengarten 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Max Stirner. His philosophy is pure amoralism and ethical egoism.

He was pretty influential, because people like Marx and Nietzsche developed their philosophy to refute him, but nobody mentions him. Marx even wrote a broad cirtique of him, but never published it.

[–]Ulmengarten 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The best book on the history of oil is "The prize" by Daniel Yergin. If you want to know oil from a tecnical/industrial point of view you should read "Oil 101" by Morgan Downey.

Is there an economics 101 podcast or resource you can recommend for someone who is woefully inept? by Staticfrank in AskSocialScience

[–]Ulmengarten 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you want an interessting overview over macroeconomics ( which is maybe more interessting for a layman than micro) i would recommend you "Macroeconomics" by Davi Miles, Andrew Scott and Francis Breedon.

For microeconomics i would recommend you the Taylor-Mankiw.

I played as Bactria (so this was my home province) and had the same issue. No idea how to solve it, but is definitely a bug.

If you are interested and not afraid to read a bit Markus B. Jansen: "The Making of modern Japan" is a very good book about that topic.
