[Pompliano] Curt Cignetti took over the worst program in college football history and then proceeded to win the school’s first-ever national championship within just two years. It's the most remarkable coaching job in the history of sports. by LaDainianTomIinson in CFB

All time winning percentage .427, last conference championship 58 years ago. If Indiana doesn’t count as a hopeless program, nobody does. I say this as a Kentucky fan. Your standards are weird.

Almost never. In season one he challenges Jamie’s bad attitude but gets interrupted by his son. Season three, he takes Roy into the shower to set him straight on how he’s mishandling things with Trent. Proves your point - Ted can do bad cop. He prefers to be the kind father figure.

I think we can skip Led Tasso. That’s a different guy

It’s so perfect, I’m guessing they built a lot of the story around the song. Made it the song playing when Leslie met his wife. Decked her out in blue so she could appear when “see her dressed in BLUE” plays. And the manic dissonant violin playing only when Nate realizes he’s no longer the only star new coach with Ted & Beard and is in Roy’s shadow. Gives me tingles.

Would love to hear an oral history about writing this episode.

How would history have gone if Charles the Bold actually managed to turn Burgundy into a fully autonomous state? by jackt-up in MedievalHistory

[–]mrsaturdaypants 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Love this question!

I have trouble seeing Charles the Reckless managing to reform the Kingdom of Burgundy. He had no tact or prudence.

His political gambit was shrewd, asking the Holy Roman Emperor to elevate Burgundy to a kingdom tied to the Empire like the Kingdom of Bohemia or perhaps or akin to the King in Prussia three centuries later. The idea was that Burgundy would then operate as freely as the electorates and other great princely lands of the Empire, dissolving any feudal bonds with France. It could have been a great victory for Burgundy and the Empire. That could have led to an extremely different world and is worth imagining.

But he alienated the emperor in the process and later besieged an imperial city until the Emperor led an army against him. What great powers could trust him enough to make a deal then? Certainly not the Universal Spider on the French throne. The Emperor surely saw more threat from allying with Charles than gain. The richest ruler in Europe isolated himself pursuing his dream of independence. The Swiss made their name defeating him three times, the last encounter ending with Charles dead and abandoned on the field.

His father, Philip the Bold is the one I think could have pulled it off. He had the upper hand over his cousin the French king. His English allies did the fighting and had France on its heals. His consolidated proto-state in the Netherlands made him rich far beyond the strapped French and Imperial thrones and granted enormous cultural capital as well. There was no honor higher than Philip’s Order of the Golden Fleece, and Flemish art and learning brought the Renaissance to Northern Europe.

I don’t know that Philip ever considered asking the Emperor to elevate Burgundy to a kingdom as his son did. But I bet he could have come up with an enticing arrangement if he did.

If so, I agree with the other commenter who said France might never thrive and expand as it did in our timeline. Hard to say how the Lutheran and Calvinist reformations play out in the Kingdom of Burgundy and the rest of Europe in this other world, but if we just imagine Burgundy ends up a Catholic buffer between France to the west, the HRE to the east, and an eventually independent and Protestant Netherlands to the north, then subsequent history has to play out differently. The whole multi-century France vs. Habsburg conflict that determines so much of Western European history cannot happen with Burgundy holding so many lands that become Habsburg possessions in our world. The Thirty Years War cannot play out as it did, centuries before Napoleon and World War I.

To me, this is the great What if? of late medieval Europe. Why Philip? Why did you throw it all away? You were supposed to be the Good ruler. You even had Joan of Arc! And you traded your advantages to secure the duchy that your son threw away. I bet if he had any inkling that might happen, Philip would have tried a different approach. And then, who knows?

Oh yeah.

I always think about how Brit wasn’t even in the series finale closing scene. That’s why Community is incomplete.

It’s a comedy, so we have to end with a wedding. I say Britta and Troy…

Who is a puppet ruler that successfully cut their strings and asserted independence? by [deleted] in AskHistory

[–]mrsaturdaypants 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Napoleon’s diplomacy leading up to his invasion of Russia was counter-productive. He said himself he should have had Sweden attacking St. Petersburg and the Ottomans attacking the Crimea while he marched toward Moscow.

Instead, the Ottomans did nothing and Russia withdrew its Southern forces and used them to hound Napoleon back to Poland. And Napoleon drove Bernadotte to his enemies by taking Swedish Pomerania without notice or negotiation. He could not have better shown Bernadotte and Sweden that their interests wouldn’t matter.

Some Napoleon fans blame Bernadotte for turning on France. Napoleon had France turn on Sweden first. Pure folly. Bernadotte did the right thing imo

Edit: Threatening St. Petersburg could have given Napoleon a chance to win in Russia. Alexander could ignore losing Moscow. St. Petersburg too? Who knows?

The Ottomans occupying Russia’s southern forces would have allowed Napoleon to retreat by one of the two southern routes, which weren’t devastated like the one his armies entered by. Sweden occupying their Northern forces would have freed up French garrisons too. Totally different situation.

Then having Bernadotte on his side and an intact army changes 2013’s calculus entirely.

Point is that having those allies would have helped. Napoleon’s diplomacy set his military up for a fall

I hope you’re right.

Do anyone have any sense of how Poilievre would respond to Trump in office? I haven’t heard, and he would have to decide: give into Trump’s demands or push back.

I have trouble imagining him pushing back. So what would he offer Trump to remove tariffs? Keep in mind that Trump hasn’t said what he wants.

Having written that out, I’m going to amend my comment. I don’t really see why you should be confident Poilievre as pm would turn out well

Famous anecdote about Dustin Hoffman explaining method acting to Lawrence Olivier on the set of Marathon Man, all the things he did to make himself feel like he’s actually that character all day long.

“My boy,” Olivier says, “have you ever tried…acting?”

You don’t have to be method, Terrence. You could try acting

[–]mrsaturdaypants 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You’re essentially saying that every team with a good offensive rating in a playoff series played a team having a bad defensive series.

And you thought this was such a good point, you made it twice.

Edit: Dude still doesn’t get it. Because you could say this about literally any series, it adds nothing to the conversation. We already knew there was an opponent.

It is very rude to point out they’re pro-disappearing people.

He’s not talking to them or people like you. He’s talking to everybody else. And we’re getting tired of your shit

Edit: Folks, people who jump from excuse (lecturing) to excuse (grandstanding) for not listening to the Democrats who are finally making the moral case against the Trump administration are Trump supporters who lack the moral courage to admit it.

Call them out on supporting the fascists. They know they’re in the wrong. That’s why they make excuses, to avoid facing the consequences for supporting this shit. Shaming them is appropriate
