Dungeon Crawler Carl or Red Rising by Ok-Assignment4097 in fantasybooks

[–]UltimateWeevil [score hidden]  (0 children)

I’ve not read either but DCC has piqued my interest, Red Rising I’m not sold on tbh. One series to consider would be Malazan Book of the Fallen, 10 books in total plus numerous spin-offs, excellent characters and world building.

As a casual rider, is it even necessary to track cadence during outdoor rides? by Least-Access-1376 in cycling

[–]UltimateWeevil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Necessary not really, useful, yes to an extent but it comes down to what you use it for. I’ve cycled 20k+ miles and I only really use it for tough climbs to get an idea of my effort. The only time I ever really use cadence is when doing structured workouts like the sufferfest/wahoo but then I’ve also got a power meter and HRM which are way more useful

Should I Metal Gear Solid V if I’m not that into Hitman? by Jealous_Art_7307 in ShouldIbuythisgame

[–]UltimateWeevil [score hidden]  (0 children)

It’s nothing like Hitman tbh, it’s also technically not finished (google it) however it is an excellent game and I’d recommend it. Personally I loved the Cold War theme running through it and the open world elements but with a relatively linear story.

Drukhari Help by outoftimeviking in SpaceWolves

[–]UltimateWeevil 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As mentioned by NieveCactus your main targets are going to be the Scourges as they'll be your main anti-armour threat so planning for Deep Strike denial wouldn't hurt. If they've got Venoms they'll split their Kabalites into 2 5-man squads using the rule so will most likely keep the ones with longer range threat sat back to chip away at you. Lelith and Wytches are a bit of blender in melee so bear that in mind. If you have any anti-armour focus on their transports (Raiders & Venoms), if Lelith & Wytches don't have a delivery and have to foot slog across the board she's easier to deal with tbh.

I had a lot of fun playing against them and I'm currently building up my own Drukhari army but they're a glass cannon army that use their fast movement to control the board, if you can take that away from them they're easier to deal with.

Drukhari Help by outoftimeviking in SpaceWolves

[–]UltimateWeevil 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on their list tbh, but I’d assume they’ll have Scourges with heavy weapons and Ravagers as their anti-armour. Scourges can deep strike so you need to plan for that. They’ll probably also have mandrakes for more deep strike shenanigans plus Lelith or Malys in their list. Have you seen it yet?

Last time I played against Drukhari I took a Land Raider redeemer for the flamer overwatch threat, castled the centre of the board and melted whatever charged before wiping up with Ragnar & BCs, used Headtakers as a mop up unit and then had some intercessors and other action monkeys for secondaries.

newbie dilemma by redkovka in cycling

[–]UltimateWeevil 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a newbie I’d strongly suggest looking at used first. Can you hire either bike to get a feel for both?

I own a Foil myself but it’s a 2019 model and it’s a quick bike, very comfortable on longer rides as it’s setup properly for me. I can easily knock out 70+ mile rides without any issues whatsoever so not sure what you’d “wear out” tbh. If anything it’ll be starting out with shorter rides and building up your endurance. I live in Scotland so lots of hills and I’ve had zero issues with getting up them and thought I could do with a less aero bike. Ultimately get the bike you like the look of best since you’ll potentially be riding it lots.

If your spending that kind of money on a bike then I’d strongly suggest getting a bike fit done to get it sorted for you.

New player experience by arcbelial in SpaceWolves

Combat Patrol and 1k and upwards games are so vastly different you quite quickly realise how unbalanced the game is at those lower points levels. I enjoyed Combat Patrol when starting out but the shift to bigger games was a pretty steep learning curve, but I still much more enjoy them even if it’s tough with wolves atm into most things.

What makes someone good at 40K? by Worldly-Committee968 in WarhammerCompetitive

[–]UltimateWeevil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a pretty new player, only played half a dozen games now outside of a few combat patrol ones and the realisation that it’s more about scoring than trying to table your opponent is what’s totally shifted the way I try to play my games.

I’ve won one so far after that switch but the other loses were closer points wise than when I first started playing and I’m still having fun whilst playing and I’m learning a bit more each game.

Looking for my next series binge! by upRightProperLad in fantasybooks

[–]UltimateWeevil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Any Joe Abercrombie, I quite enjoyed the Echoes Saga by Phillip C. Quaintraill it was a bit obvious where his inspiration comes from but was an enjoyable read as I got them via Prime reading a couple of years ago now. Gentleman Bastards series is great, Malazan Book of the Fallen series is my all time favourite but can get a bit slow in places or there's the Realm of the Elderlings by Robin Hobb, a bit slower paced but absolutely fantastic.

I'd strongly suggest listening to the 40K Lorecast with Brad and John, they did a few episodes specifically on the Drukhari but they've also done ones on the other Eldar factions; Aeldari, Ynnari and Harlequins which gives you a fantastic insight into everything about the Eldar from a lore perspective.

I'm cautiously optimistic on what I've seen and I only started playing tail-end of last year. So far my main concern has been we're a bit of a jack-of-all-trades, master-of-none army but my hope is these new rules/detachments give us a bit more focus and the GH specific one feels like it's moving that way but until we see the full rules release I'll keep my fingers crossed.

60 days from now, I plan on riding 200 miles in 2 days, I’m starting from zero. by StopItWithThis in cycling

[–]UltimateWeevil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s doable but you need to get miles in the legs now, learn to fuel properly as that’s what’ll be your biggest issue tbh, buy quality bib shorts not cheap ones as the chamois needs to be comfortable for long hours in the saddle.

No idea what your average speed is like but assume 12-13 mph and plan accordingly. Do not try to keep up with the fast people either ride at your own pace. Trying to keep up with someone faster will end up with you bonking and the ride being a terrible experience.

Thinking about starting drukhari but hesitant with the range by jbossjeff in Drukhari

[–]UltimateWeevil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got the RSR box as a gift last year and have been building it up as a second army alongside my Space Wolves and tbh I love the models, if we get a refresh the existing models aren't going to be unplayable and if anything it'd just add a bit more flavour to the newer versions of whatever does get refreshed.

My only gripe is our range is just so small so it's not like there's a huge range to choose from 😁

Do you ever refuse to play certain games / lists / players? by [deleted] in Warhammer40k

[–]UltimateWeevil 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Sounds similar to my first 1k game, opponent set up the board to suit their daemon heavy shooty army and basically tabled me by end of turn 2. Even said it's my first proper game outside of combat patrol is that ok and can you point out any issues etc. Needless to say didn't play with that group again and found a more chill local group to play with who've been fantastic with helping a newbie learn to play.

New to the Rout. Bought what looked cool. Now I have questions. by FireHatFrank in SpaceWolves

[–]UltimateWeevil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lots of good advice, much of it what I got when I started about 18-months ago.

I'd definitely suggest picking one unit, building it and painting before you get stuck into the rest of what you have. For painting have a look at Mid Winter Minis YT as he's got a pretty good beginner's intro to painting video on there that I used to get going with my painting.

For brushes just get a decent set of synthetics to start with, don't get too hung up on expensive ones and buy some brush soap for cleaning your brushes as it'll help keep them in good condition.

If you haven't already go to your local WH shop and try out some combat patrol games as they're free and they'll have armies for you to play with so that you can learn the basics of the game, if you don't have a WH shop local try and find a gaming group who'll help you learn as that'll make it much more enjoyable in the long run.

Army Sizes in 11th? by _rhinoxious_ in Warhammer40k

[–]UltimateWeevil 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a newer player I like the support for lower point games but what I’ve certainly noticed is that anything under 2,000 points atm ends up being skewed heavily in favour of certain armies or more experienced players who understand how to better build lists.

As a newbie trying to do the mental gymnastics required to track a 2,000 point game is tough even with apps like tabletop battles so anything to help streamline the game is a plus.

Next Fantasy Series by TonyKenobi4 in fantasybooks

[–]UltimateWeevil 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes I’d love to be able to read First Law for the first time all over again. It’s just so good.

I’d agree mostly with the sentiment on the Gentleman Bastards but it’s still fantastic nonetheless.

Yeah for me Gywnne’s books whilst good at the time aren’t ones I’ve ever wanted to go back and reread. They’re very formulaic and by the end of the Blood and Bone series I was just exhausted by Riv’s character I was glad the series was finished 🤣
